Wolves Appoint Portuguese Peixoto As New Boss

Wolverhampton Wanderers have appointed Cesar Peixoto as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

The 46-year-old arrives from Portuguese top-flight club Gil Vicente and replaces Rob Edwards who was sacked last week.

Peixoto takes charge of a Wolves side who will play in the Championship for the first time since 2018 after they finished bottom of the Premier League last season.

It will be Peixoto’s first job outside of Portugal having led Gil Vicente to a sixth-placed finish in the Primeira Liga in 2025-26.

His last role was the first time in his seven years as a manager that he completed an entire season in charge at one club.

“Throughout our discussions with him, it became clear very quickly that he possesses many of the qualities we believe are important for the future of this football club,” Wolves executive chairman Nathan Shi said.

“We wanted clear identity, strong leadership qualities and a real hunger to succeed. Cesar demonstrated all of those characteristics, but what impressed me most was his mentality, his work ethic and his willingness to embrace the challenge in front of him.

“He is young, energetic and ambitious, but he is also thoughtful, accountable and willing to challenge himself and those around him in pursuit of improvement.

“We believe he will be an excellent fit for the culture and vision we are building at Wolves.”

As a player, Peixoto won a single cap for Portugal in 2008, and was part of Jose Mourinho’s Champions League-winning Porto squad in 2004.

Out of Wolves’ past seven managers, Peixoto is the fourth from Portugal following Nuno Espirito Santo, Bruno Lage and Vitor Pereira.

“I’m proud to be here at this big, historic club in England,” Peixoto said.

“It’s a big opportunity for me and I’m prepared to do everything to put Wolves where it belongs in the Premier League.

“We have great players, but I think the team can improve a lot with me and I can improve as a technical head coach. I want to put my identity onto the team, build a strong identity at the club and also help the team to grow by showing my identity and my way of playing.

“This is an amazing club, and it is important for me to make Wolves play in a way which reflects the fans. It’s a hard-working city with a lot of energy and a lot of passion, and I want them to see a team which plays an offensive game, with good organisation and a team who play for the fans.

“I want the supporters to be proud of our players, be proud of the way we play and the way we fight game after game to bring the victory, and to achieve the main aim, which is to put Wolves back in the Premier League.”

Imo: Police begin statewide enforcement against vehicles with unregistered, concealed plate numbers

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, in compliance with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, has ordered intensified enforcement against vehicles operating without registration number plates, as well as those with concealed, altered, defaced, or otherwise obscured registration numbers.

CP Bosso gave the directive during a strategic meeting with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Team Commanders, and Heads of Departments at the Command Headquarters in Owerri.

He said the operation is aimed at strengthening internal security and enhancing crime prevention across the state.

The Imo police commissioner warned that the use of unregistered or concealed number plates poses a serious security risk, as it aids criminal concealment and hampers identification.

He therefore directed members of the public to ensure strict compliance with lawful vehicle registration and the proper display of number plates. He further instructed officers to conduct the exercise professionally and strictly within the ambit of the law.

CP Bosso also used the occasion to charge area commanders and DPOs to intensify intelligence-led policing within their areas of responsibility, calling for sustained raids on criminal hideouts, black spots, and forested areas used by criminal elements.

He further emphasized proactive community policing and continuous engagement with residents to address emerging security challenges. He instructed supervisory officers to regularly mentor personnel on professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights while ensuring strict adherence to the lawful use of force.

The Police Commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism and warned officers against extortion, incivility, unlawful interference in civil matters, and other forms of misconduct.

He charged the provost and X-Squad departments to intensify supervision and monitoring of personnel to ensure strict compliance with the new directives.

WB Lists Tin Can, Apapa Among Most Improved Ports Worldwide

The ongoing reform and modernization drive championed by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has earned international recognition, with the World Bank ranking the Tin Can Island Port Complex and Apapa Port Complex among the world’s Top 20 Most Improved Ports.

According to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, released in June 2026 by the World Bank, both ports were listed in the Top 20 Port Improvement category, underscoring the remarkable gains recorded in operational efficiency and turnaround time under the current management.

The CPPI is a globally recognized benchmark that provides a consistent, data-driven assessment of port performance based on vessel time spent in port.

The index enables comparisons across ports worldwide and over time, helping to identify areas of progress as well as operational challenges requiring attention.

The latest recognition comes on the heels of the Nigerian Ports Authority’s pivotal role in sustaining Nigeria’s trade surplus. Through enhanced efficiency and improved port operations, the NPA has continued to provide the platform for Nigeria’s successive attainment of trade surpluses since 2024.

Most recently, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported a trade surplus of N7.54trn in the first quarter (Q1) of 2026, highlighting the strategic importance of the nation’s ports to economic growth and international trade.

Reacting to the World Bank report, the Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, attributed the achievement to the investor-friendly policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the support of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

“With the investor-friendly policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu providing the impetus for increased investment to drive our port infrastructure and equipment modernization programme, coupled with the unflinching support of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, we have all it takes to further enhance trade facilitation, improve competitiveness and boost the national economy.”

The recognition is expected to strengthen investors’ confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector and reinforce the country’s position as a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa.

  • Palace Appoint Sage As Head Coach

Palace Appoint Sage As Head Coach

Crystal Palace have appointed Lens manager Pierre Sage as their head coach on a three-year contract.

The 47-year-old Frenchman replaces Oliver Glasner, who left the Eagles at the end of the 2025-26 season after two and a half years in charge.

Sage joined Lens 12 months ago and led them to a second-placed finish in Ligue 1 and the first Coupe de France triumph in the club’s 120-year history.

He previously spent 14 months as head coach of Lyon, initially on an interim basis, and guided them to Europa League qualification in 2024-25.

Palace had been interested in former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, now at Liverpool, with Frank Lampard, Kieran McKenna, and Sean Dyche also reportedly in the mix.

Sage has big shoes to fill after Glasner won three trophies during his time in south London.

The Austrian led the Eagles to the first major trophy in their history – the FA Cup in 2025 – and followed up by winning the Community Shield and Conference League last season.

Their European triumph means Palace will play Europa League football in Sage’s debut campaign.

He will be joined at the club by Jamal Alioui, his assistant coach at Lens. Existing Palace coaches Paddy McCarthy and Andy Quy will stay on as part of Sage’s backroom staff.

  • 2027: Ogun PDP names veteran journalist, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as deputy governorship candidate

2027: Ogun PDP names veteran journalist, Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo as deputy governorship candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ogun State on Monday unveiled veteran journalist, Lateefah Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Kolapo, who is also the Iya Suna of Egbaland, is expected to be the running mate to the governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, in the election.

Speaking at the declaration ceremony held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, the state chairman of the party, Abayomi Tella, said the PDP was confident of victory in 2027.

Tella noted that the party had selected candidates who are “pure and undiluted indigenes of Ogun State.”

He said, “The efforts of the State Working Committee and the leadership of this party are now yielding significant results.

“All of you, without exception, will agree with me today that the PDP in Ogun State is well-positioned to be a major force in 2027. Let me thank every leader of this party who has not rested on their oars until we got to this level. As we are doing this today, another one will soon come.

“I have told the other party that when they go for minnows and fries, we go for the big fish, and that’s the result we are seeing now, and we are still going to see more.

“The good thing about this combination is that these are pure, undiluted indigenes of Ogun State. When the other party wanted to make another error, they still went to import someone who permanently lives in Lagos, in addition to the original Lagos person they brought to us.

“We have agreed that the theme of this election is going to be Ogun for Ogun. Are we going to allow a total stranger to come and claim our inheritance? Are we ready to fight with our voter cards against him?” he asked.

Also speaking, the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, said the deputy governorship candidate emerged through the will of the people and for the purpose of serving them.

“today, however, I believe, and we should all sense, that the time is right. We have forty candidates on this stage today, and for the first time, I can confidently say that there is no weak link among us. All forty candidates are steadfast, committed and strong.

“That is a message to those who are watching and studying what we are doing: God’s time is always the best,” Adebutu added.

In her acceptance speech, the deputy governorship candidate, Lateefah Sowunmi-Kolapo, appreciated the party for reposing confidence in her.

Sowunmi-Kolapo urged residents to come out en masse to vote, expressing confidence that the PDP would emerge victorious and take its seat at Oke-Mosan.

Meanwhile, Iyabo Obasanjo urged the electorate to protect their votes and not allow what she described as “vote stealing” in 2019 and 2023 to repeat itself.

She insisted that Adebutu was robbed of his mandate in previous elections and assured supporters that such would not happen in 2027, given her influence within the party.
