Tunisia Appoint Renard As Coach After W/Cup Humiliation Defeat

The Tunisian Football Federation has responded to their 5-1 World Cup thrashing by Sweden by sacking coach Sabri Lamouchi and replacing him with Frenchman Herve Renard.

Lamouchi is the first coach in World Cup history to be sacked after just one game.

Renard guided Saudi Arabia to a shock win against eventual winners Argentina at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has since coached the France women’s team.

“The president of the Tunisian Football Federation, Moez Nassari, announced that an official agreement had been reached with French coach Herve Renard for him to take charge of the national football team until the end of the 2026 World Cup,” the Tunisian public broadcaster announced.

Lamouchi, 54, had only been in charge since January.

The former French international player won just one of his five games in charge, a 1-0 victory over Haiti.

The heavy defeat by Sweden on Sunday leaves Tunisia with a tough task to reach the knockout round.

They face Japan in their next Group F match on Saturday before taking on the Netherlands.

  • Ogun CSOs reject multiple levies, regulations, seek single regulatory framework

Ogun CSOs reject multiple levies, regulations, seek single regulatory framework

Civil society organizations, CSOs, in Ogun State have condemned the multiple levies, overlapping regulatory requirements and duplication of registration process imposed by federal and state agencies in the state.

The CSOs urged government to harmonise all regulations affecting their operations.

They also called on the Ogun State government to eliminate policies that commercialize their operations and collaborate or dialogue with them on matters affecting the civic space and non-profit sector.

The societies self-regulatory Community of Practice, CoP, expressed displeasure with the situation on Tuesday during a media briefing on Civil Society Self Regulatory Compliance, in Abeokuta.

Addressing journalists, Akinpelu Akintayo, a member of CoP, stressed that as representative of citizens’ interests, CSOs contribute significantly to the monitoring of public service delivery, advocates for vulnerable populations and supports government efforts to achieve sustainable development outcomes.

He frowned at persistent misconceptions that CSOs operate without regulation, the multiple registrations, renewals, fees and urged government regulatory bodies, especially the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, and Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, to adopt efficient, supportive and digital-friendly systems that ease compliance rather than hinder their work.

“Driving accountability and good governance by purging our sector of irregularities and boosting our internal compliance structures, COs in Ogun State are positioning themselves from a vantage point of strength.

“A self-compliant civil society has the moral authority to demand transparency from the Ogun State Government hence a vibrant civil society sector remains essential to good governance, democratic participation, and sustainable development.

“We believe that strengthening compliance with existing regulations, rather than creating additional layers of regulation is the most effective approach to promoting accountability while preserving the civic space necessary for CSOs  to contribute meaningfully to development in Ogun state and Nigeria as a whole” Akintayo added.

Meanwhile, the CoP urged all civic organizations operating within the state to comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability.

They also called for self-regulatory initiatives and capacity-building programs, and the promotion of responsible and ethical practices that strengthen public trust in the sector.

  • Deregistering ADC, others threatens 2027 elections – AA chair, Udeze

Deregistering ADC, others threatens 2027 elections – AA chair, Udeze

The Action Alliance, AA, has faulted the Abuja Federal High Court’s decision that deregistered the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and four other political parties, describing the ruling as a threat to the 2027 elections.

AA National Chairman, Kenneth Udeze, expressed concerns that such an action might weaken Nigeria’s democratic system and disrupt efforts to organize for the 2027 elections.

In a statement he issued on Tuesday, Udeze raised concerns that political parties are already working to gather support and prepare for the upcoming election period.

“Democracy thrives on diversity of ideas and platforms. Nigerians deserve broader opportunities to express their political aspirations, not a shrinking democratic space,” he said.

Udeze noted that while the party respects the courts and the law, the decision brings up important concerns over inclusive democracy and free and fair elections.

The AA chairman also noted that the development is especially concerning because the Court of Appeal had reportedly paused the legal process related  to the suit.

He said, “Nigerians should have more chances to share their political hopes, not fewer opportunities in a democracy.”

The party cautioned that ceasing the registration of political parties before a general election could lead to the disenfranchisement of members, disruption of years of political organization, and potentially harmful tensions within the government.

According to the party, issues relating to following rules and election laws should be handled through discussion, changes and proper procedures, instead of removing someone’s registration during an ongoing election.

The party emphasized that building stronger democratic institutions should come first, rather than taking steps that might seem like they are excluding people.

“A healthy democracy cannot be built on exclusion,” the statement said.

  • Insecurity: Residents Groan As Enugu LGA Restricts Okada Operations

Insecurity: Residents Groan As Enugu LGA Restricts Okada Operations

The authorities of Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State have restricted the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly called okada, and those of tricycles, known as Keke, following increasing insecurity in the area.

The directive, THE WHISTLER gathered, took effect from 15th June, 2026. The Chairman of the LGA, Mr Chinedu Asogwa, had announced that their operations would be from 6am to 7pm daily, and till further notice.

Mixed reactions have, however, trailed the restriction. John Agbo, a trader, said the order is adversely affecting some categories of the residents.

“I work in Enugu, and return to Nsukka around 7:30pm daily,” says Agbo. “My residence is not along the major road. I had always utilised the services of these okada riders. With the ban, what is my fate? Unfortunately, the restriction is not just commercial operators, but any motorcycle, including private owners. This means that I can’t even engage my friends to help me out unless those that have cars.”

A worker in a private sector, Hyacinth Ogbodo, believes the authorities adopted a wrong approach. “Many workers close around 6pm. Some of them reside at locations far from their places of work. Some work at night, like pubs. Some residents were stranded yesterday because of the development. Okada and Keke operators are the major means of movement for most residents. If this policy is to last longer, then the council authorities should devise effective means of movement, especially in remote areas. They can contract commercial buses to be servicing isolated areas.”

Maureen Osakwe, a trader, commended the LGA for the ban. According to her, “Many things, which people don’t know, happen at Nsukka. There are boys carrying dreadlocks and wearing earrings. We call them yahoo yahoo. They ride fanciful motorcycles. They always carry young girls. Some of the girls disappear forever. Let’s work with the chairman’s initiative, and see the results,” she said.

Meanwhile, some bus operators say the development has returned their business to its lost glory. “Before the coming of Keke, bus driving was giving us money,” narrates Fabian Nnadi, a driver. “But Keke operators and okada riders destroyed our business. Passengers avoided us. Some of us converted our buses to carriers of charcoals, tomatoes and animal manure. Some drivers abandoned their career. With the ban at night, we can return to work, especially at night. This is a rainy season, and passengers will pay anything to get home during emergencies.”

It was gathered that the decision to restrict the operations followed increasing cases of murders suspected to be cult-related in the area.

“I advise the council chairman to encourage community policing,” suggests Osmond Onu, a student. “He should motivate local vigilantes. We understand that the restriction is to check insecurity in the area, but the policy is becoming very harsh on the innocent residents. Since the launch of the scheme, many people have experienced one ordeal and another. Rain has dealt with many. Some trek home. It is even more risky now because hoodlums can utilise the opportunity to attack innocent people at black spots.”

  • Baba Ijesha’s Baby Arrival 7 Months After Prison Sparks Debate

Baba Ijesha’s Baby Arrival 7 Months After Prison Sparks Debate

The arrival of a new baby for Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, seven months after his release from prison, has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians on social media.

The actor announced the birth of the baby boy on Monday. He shared photos of the newborn whom he described as a special blessing.

Baba Ijesha welcomed the baby with fashion entrepreneur Abiodun Tokunbo, the Chief Executive Officer of Luminee Couture.

In his post, the actor introduced the newborn as King Kagar and expressed gratitude to God for the successful delivery.

Tokunbo also celebrated the birth in a separate post, describing the child’s arrival as a long-awaited blessing.

She wrote: “We are overwhelmed with joy.
Our little star has arrived to light up our lives. Our hearts are full. Our lives compete (sic). I heart you ijesha mi babaijesha_legit You are one in millions, your heart is pure…. What a miracle and privilege God gave us more than we prayed for, my ever strong man babaijesha_legit love you till Eternity. In quiet ways, in Unseen ways, God has been writing a story only He could tell. I get to be a mother of KING KAGAR OMIYINKA king_kagar_o
Feel free to call me MUMMY KING KAGAR”

The announcement comes seven months after Baba Ijesha regained his freedom after completing his prison sentence following his conviction in a child sexual assault case.

Following the baby announcement, some social media users congratulated the actor and his partner, while others questioned the development because of his past conviction.

One user, @celiaokechukwu, wrote: “To think you have a teenage daughter!!! Omo! You don’t enter the gutter to chop food. I can’t believe this! A child molester?!!! Ha!
May God protect your daughter from his preying eyes and hands, as you, her mother, have decided to throw her into a lion’s den.”
Another reaction from @yettyalaw reads: “If you know the number of sexual cases that are thrown out of court not because the incident didn’t happen but because there isn’t enough evidence to convict the accused, You will know why this is a big deal. This man was literally convicted. Y’all making me go crazy mehnnnnnnn”
Omobee also wrote: “How desperate can a woman be to go for a known pedo? Your daughter’s daddy better get his daughter b4 ljesa starts molesting her. How do you feel comfortable watching the video of where he was sucking that girl’s fingers?”

However, some users defended the actor, arguing that he had served his sentence and should be allowed to move on with his life.

@k.west_85 said, “All of you making negative comments need to take a hard look at yourselves. Because someone was convicted, does that mean he should never marry or have children again? He has already paid the price for his actions and is now a free man. What exactly do some of you want-should he be punished forever? I honestly don’t understand this mindset.
The truth is that many people judging him may have done things far worse behind closed doors. The only difference is that your own wrongdoings have not been exposed to the public, so people still see you as innocent….. When the incident happened, I was one of the people who condemned what he did that time. He was sentenced and paid for what he did, and now he’s a free man. As for me, I don’t see anything wrong or have a problem with him marrying.”

Another user, @lamhoriz, reacted: “Most of you talking have done worse than being a murderer. The only difference is that his sin is public, while yours may be even worse if it were brought to light. Judge carefully. Condemn carefully. Crucify carefully. He committed a terrible crime and has served his jail term. Do we have to keep pushing him until he becomes depressed and commits suicide? At this point, some of you condemning him are worse than the person you’re judging. Don’t push people to their breaking point and then act innocent. Everyone deserves a chance to pick up the pieces of their life and move forward.”

Since his release, Baba Ijesha has gradually returned to public life through interviews, social media appearances and public engagements.
