Three suspected Shilla boys arrested over phone snatching, planned violence

Three young men identified as members of the notorious criminal gang known as the Shilla Boys have been arrested in Yola for alleged robbery and a planned act of violence.

One suspect is being held for allegedly attacking a resident and snatching his phone, while the other two are accused of possessing knives and cutlasses allegedly intended for use in causing mayhem at a birthday party.

The Adamawa State Police Command, which made the arrests, said the first suspect, Abdulmalik Mohammed, 22, of the Zango area of Yola, armed with a cutlass, attacked his victim and dispossessed him of his mobile phone.

A statement from the command said that after the victim raised the alarm, members of the public apprehended the suspect and attempted to lynch him before police operatives arrived and took him into custody.

The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said preliminary investigations linked the suspect to a series of theft cases within the Yola metropolis, including the theft of a sewing machine at Tsohon Kasuwa.

Nguroje stated that on June 14, 2026, police operatives on confidence-building patrol arrested two suspected Shilla gang members identified as Abba Abdullahi, 17, and Abdulrahman Saidu, 16.

He explained that the suspects were found in possession of knives believed to have been intended for use in committing criminal acts at a birthday party.

He added that the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Kabir Umar Hassan, commended the operatives for their proactive response and professionalism.

LASEPA disclosed this in a statement posted on its X handle on Tuesday.

According to the agency, the operation was conducted on the directive of the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab.

LASEPA said Westgate Arena Club, located at Apostolic Church Close, Olowora, was sealed for persistent noise pollution. It said Golden Click Hotel on Cados Road, Baruwa, was shut for non-compliance with the agency’s directives.

The agency also sealed the 14:02 Lounge and Bar along Command Road, Aralamo Bus Stop, Ipaja, over noise pollution.

Similarly, the Cherubim and Seraphim Church on Olumuyiwa Jacobs Street, Aguda, Surulere, was shut for noise pollution.

Hotel Macs on Enitan Street, Aguda, Surulere, was sealed for failing to comply with the agency’s directives, while Hotel Bel Am on Agbebi Street, Ijesha, was sanctioned for noise pollution.

The agency also sealed the Fecomillion Hotel on Salami Bashorun Street, Ijesha, Surulere, for non-compliance with directives.

PetroSafe Gas Station on Ijesha Road was shut for obstruction of duty and non-compliance with environmental regulations.

Also affected were Serena Hotel and Suites on Ashoge Street, off Cele Bus Stop, Surulere, CitiLounge on Mobe Street, Ishaga, and Gariot on Ogunlana Drive.

LASEPA said the CitiLounge was sealed for noise pollution, while the Gariot was shut for obstruction of duty and non-compliance with its directives.

Speaking on the exercise, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting public health and the environment.

“Environmental compliance is a collective responsibility,” Ajayi said.

He urged residents and organisations to comply with environmental laws and regulations, noting that the agency would continue to intensify enforcement actions against violators.

Ajayi also called on residents and business owners to adopt environmentally responsible practices and cooperate with regulatory authorities to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.

He reiterated LASEPA’s commitment to enforcing environmental standards and ensuring compliance across the state.

According to him, the agency will continue to deploy all lawful measures to achieve a safer, healthier and more sustainable environment for residents.

  • Obidient Movement Raises Concerns Over Delisting Of ADC, Accord, Others

Obidient Movement Raises Concerns Over Delisting Of ADC, Accord, Others

The Obidient Movement has condemned a Federal High Court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to deregister five political parties, describing the ruling as a threat to political inclusion and democratic participation in Nigeria.

The order, delivered on Monday by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, directed INEC to delist the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party (AP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) over alleged failure to meet constitutional performance thresholds under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022.

The suit was filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which asked the court to determine whether INEC is constitutionally bound to deregister parties that fail to meet electoral benchmarks, including winning at least 25 per cent of votes in any state in a presidential election or securing at least one elective office.

Reacting in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, the Obidient Movement said it was concerned about the implications of the ruling for Nigeria’s democratic space.

The group described itself as “an organic movement driven by the self-sacrifice, commitment, and collective determination of Nigerians who believe that a New Nigeria is Possible,” adding that it is aligned with the political philosophy of Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

It warned that reducing the number of political platforms available to citizens would undermine democratic choice and participation.

According to the statement, “We align strongly with the ideas and principles of His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, who has consistently demonstrated a different approach to politics by challenging the dominance of a money-driven political system.”

The movement stressed that democracy must remain open and competitive, arguing that inclusiveness is central to its survival.

It stated: “As believers in democratic values, we are concerned about the deregistration of political parties such as ADC, AA, ZLP and APP.

“A vibrant democracy thrives on inclusiveness, political participation, and the availability of diverse platforms through which citizens can freely express their aspirations and choices.”

The group further said Nigeria’s democratic future must be built on fairness, credible institutions, and stronger citizen participation, rather than restrictions on political actors.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to civic engagement, accountability, and voter mobilisation ahead of future elections, urging Nigerians not to disengage from the political process.

“The future of Nigeria’s democracy must be built on fairness, inclusion, credible institutions, and the active participation of citizens,” the statement added.

The movement encouraged citizens to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), describing voting as a key instrument of democratic power.

“Your PVC is more than a card; it is your voice, your power, and your responsibility. Every election is an opportunity to shape the future we desire,” it concluded.

Mixed reactions trail Baba Ijesha, wife Luminee’s newborn announcement

Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, and his wife, Anjy Luminee, have welcomed a baby boy, a development that has sparked mixed reactions on social media.

DAILY POST reported that the couple announced the birth of their son on Tuesday, drawing congratulatory messages from colleagues, fans and well wishers.

However, the announcement also reignited discussions about the actor’s past legal troubles.

Among those who reacted was Bobrisky, whose congratulatory message attracted criticism from some social media users.

Actress Moyo Lawal also faced backlash after congratulating the couple, with some users questioning her support.

Others, however, defended her, arguing that extending congratulations did not warrant criticism.

Reality TV star Angel Smith questioned Luminee’s decision to remain married to Baba Ijesha despite the controversy surrounding his conviction.

Social media commentator Daniel Regha also weighed in, suggesting that Luminee should have ended the marriage following the actor’s sentencing.

Despite the criticism, several celebrities celebrated the couple’s new arrival.

Actor Yomi Fabiyi congratulated the family, while actress Olayinka Solomon and other supporters also sent goodwill messages.

The development has generated widespread debate across social media platforms, with opinions divided between those congratulating the family and those expressing concern over the actor’s past.

Recall that Baba Ijesha was convicted by a Lagos State High Court in 2022 over the sexual assault of a minor and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment. However, the conviction was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, leading to his release from prison in November 2025.

Lagos Arrests 289 Beggars In Two Weeks

The Lagos State government has intensified its enforcement campaign against street begging and related activities, with a total of 289 beggars and destitutes apprehended across various parts of the state so far in June 2026, according to a review of official operations by THE WHISTLER.

The enforcement actions were carried out by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) in multiple coordinated exercises across major locations including Oshodi, Agege, CMS, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, Ikeja, Mushin, Alimosho and Falomo.

    Arrested Beggars

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has maintained that the exercise forms part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to maintaining public order, ensuring environmental sanity, and safeguarding residents across the state.

In the first recorded operation, 144 individuals were arrested across different parts of Lagos, including Oshodi, Agege and CMS. The group included adults, teenagers and children.

In a separate exercise, enforcement officers apprehended 19 persons on Lagos Island, comprising 11 adults and eight children, while an additional 21 individuals were arrested at Ikorodu Garage and along the Ikeja axis.

    Arrested Beggars

Another operation conducted across Oshodi, Alimosho, Ikeja and surrounding areas led to the arrest of 63 adults and six children, according to official disclosures.

A further sweep by operatives of LAGESC resulted in the arrest of 36 street beggars across Falomo, Mushin and Alimosho.

In total, the combined figures from the various enforcement operations publicly shared by Wahab on his socials amount to 289 arrests within the month, a figure independently reviewed and compiled by THE WHISTLER.

The latest operation comes amid renewed efforts by the state government to address the growing presence of street beggars across major traffic corridors and public spaces in Lagos.

In November 2025, THE WHISTLER had reported on rising concerns over the increasing visibility of beggars across the metropolis, from Abule-Egba to Lekki and Oshodi to Ajah, where vulnerable individuals—including children, the elderly, teenagers, and persons with disabilities—are frequently seen soliciting alms along roadsides, under bridges, and at bus stops.

At locations such as the Abule-Egba underbridge, several destitute individuals have taken refuge, with many relying on public generosity for food and basic survival.

  • Pantami Still Our Member, Says APC

Pantami Still Our Member, Says APC

The Gombe State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reiterated that the former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Ali Pantami, remains a member of the party, insisting that due process was not followed regarding his purported resignation.

Recall that Pantami recently emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State after the APC primary, which produced Jamilu Gwamna.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Gombe, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Moses Kyari, said the APC executive committee in Pantami’s Ward had earlier clarified that it neither received nor deliberated on any resignation letter allegedly submitted by the former minister.

Kyari said 25 out of the 27 members of the ward executive maintained that the claim of Pantami’s resignation was “a fabrication orchestrated without the knowledge or approval of the Ward Executive Committee.”

“As you may recall, twenty-five out of the twenty-seven members of the Ward Executive Committee publicly stated that they neither saw nor deliberated on any resignation letter purportedly submitted by Professor Ali Isa Pantami.

“They maintained that the claim was merely a fabrication orchestrated without the knowledge or approval of the Ward Executive Committee”, he said.

According to him, the Ward Chairman, Alhaji Bala Galda, disclosed that the alleged resignation letter was received on May 23, 2026, despite being dated May 19, and was delivered by one Abba Pantami.

“Despite repeated requests, members of the Ward Executive Committee have not been provided with a copy of the said letter,” Kyari stated.

He argued that under the provisions of the APC Constitution, INEC guidelines and the Electoral Act, Pantami remains an APC member until the appropriate procedures are duly completed and verified.

“It is therefore our position that Professor Ali Isa Pantami remains a member of the APC until all due processes are properly followed and verified,” he said.

The APC spokesperson also dismissed claims allegedly made by Pantami during a televised interview on TVC that his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his governorship ambition had the blessing of President Bola Tinubu.

“We categorically reject this assertion. President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a committed leader of the APC and has consistently demonstrated loyalty to the party.

“It is difficult to believe that the President would endorse activities that are contrary to the interests and unity of the APC”, he said.

He further highlighted what he described as the achievements of the APC administration in Gombe State under Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, citing improvements in governance, infrastructure, peace and political stability.

“The governor has strengthened the party’s presence across the state, with overwhelming representation at the National Assembly, State House of Assembly and local government levels,” he said.

Kyari said the party found no justification for claims suggesting that President Tinubu had endorsed Pantami’s political ambitions outside the APC.

World Cup 2026: They don’t get past midfield – Rodri slams Cape Verde

Spain midfielder Rodri has hit out at Cape Verde’s tactical approach after the 0-0 draw in their World Cup opener on Monday.

The Manchester City star said Cape Verde didn’t have any interest in getting past the midfield, noting that they sat back during the encounter.

“It wasn’t meant to be. There’s little to complain about,” Rodri told La 1 shortly after the game.

“We knew it was a game that required patience. They sat back, and they dropped back very quickly. We couldn’t put it in. We created chances, but couldn’t finish.

“The positive thing is that they barely created anything against us. We need to improve our finishing.”

Spain will now face Saudi Arabia in their next game this weekend.

Court Revokes Sowore’s Bail, Orders Arrest

A judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja has revoked the bail granted to human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar delivered the ruling on Tuesday after Sowore failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial on a two-count cybercrime charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The charges stem from a social media post in which he described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal”.

Prosecution counsel Kehinde Akinlolu, SAN, informed the court that Sowore was absent despite being aware of the scheduled hearing.

He urged the court to revoke the defendant’s bail, alleging that he had repeatedly sought to delay the trial.

Although Sowore sent a letter requesting an adjournment, the court observed that no reason was provided for his absence.

Justice Umar subsequently revoked the bail and ordered the police and the Department of State Services to arrest Sowore and produce him before the court.

Sowore, who had earlier applied for the judge to recuse himself from the case, described the development as an attempt to assert control over the proceedings.

He maintained that he was present in court the previous day when the judge was absent.

The matter was adjourned until June 22, 2026, for further hearing.
