2026 World Cup: Why I cried after scoring against Algeria – Messi

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has revealed that he cried after scoring the first goal in their 3-0 thrashing of Algeria, due to personal reasons.

Messi grabbed his first World Cup hat-trick, as the defending champions won their first fixture in convincing fashion.

After giving Albeceleste the lead, the 38-year-old became visibly emotional.

But the Inter Miami sueprstar said after the game that it was not related to football.

“I cried after the first goal, yes… but it was something completely unrelated to football,” Messi said.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my teammates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength.”

“I Didn’t Grab Land, I Built Homes For Judges”…Wike Tells Critics

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has defended his administration’s controversial revocation of undeveloped land allocations in Abuja, insisting that the policy is yielding visible results and strengthening key public institutions.

Speaking during the commissioning of the newly constructed Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District, Wike said allegations that he was grabbing land for personal interests have been disproved by the projects now standing on reclaimed plots.

According to him, the land used for the judges’ quarters had been allocated to a major construction company over 15 years ago but remained undeveloped until the FCT Administration revoked the allocation and put it to public use.

“Those who accused me of land grabbing can now see that I did not grab any land. We simply took back land that was abandoned for over 15 years and transformed it into infrastructure that serves the judiciary and the Nigerian people,” Wike said.

The commissioning ceremony was performed on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

In a message delivered at the event, President Tinubu described the project as a clear demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the welfare, dignity, and independence of the judiciary, stressing that a strong justice system remains critical to national development, economic growth, and good governance.

The event also featured the groundbreaking ceremony for new residential quarters for judges of the National Industrial Court and the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Wike further announced that the commissioning of judiciary-related infrastructure in the FCT will continue, with the Federal High Court Judges’ Quarters in Katampe scheduled for inauguration next.

Alleged student extortion: FUOYE suspends SUG president, two senior officials

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, has suspended a director, a deputy dean and the Students’ Union Government, SUG, president over allegations of unauthorised collection of money from students.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Mufutau A. Ibrahim.

According to the statement, the affected officials are Mr Olanrewaju Patrick Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Dr Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services; and the SUG President, Mr James Iyanuoluwa Adio.

The university said management received a petition from an official of the Students’ Union Government alleging that N1,000 was collected from each 100-level student for practical sessions under the Directorate.

“In the interest of fairness and in accordance with the principles of natural justice, Management constituted a Preliminary Fact-Finding Committee to look into the allegations,” the registrar stated.

According to the statement, all individuals named in the petition appeared before the committee and were given the opportunity to respond to the allegations.

The university alleged that Ogunjobi authorised and collected the N1,000 levy from affected students without approval from the Senate, management, or through the institution’s approved payment procedures, and that Olaleye participated in the collection process despite his position within the university’s Student Affairs structure.

Management also alleged that the SUG president was indirectly involved in the matter.

“It was alleged that he participated in the sharing of an initial sum and later demanded the return of funds, resulting in the transfer of N700,000 into his personal bank account,” the statement said.

FUOYE said the three officials have been suspended pending the outcome of full disciplinary proceedings.

The university described the allegations as contrary to its campaign against corruption and extortion, stressing that the institution would not tolerate actions capable of damaging its image.

“Management wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and discipline within the university.

“The university will not tolerate the extortion of students, abuse of office, financial impropriety, or corruption in any form,” the registrar added.

Edo Govt demolishes building linked to cultism, ritual activities

The Edo State Government has demolished a building allegedly linked to cultism and ritual activities in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement by Governor Monday Okpebholo’s media aide, Patrick Ebojele, on Tuesday,  another property was also sealed off in a renewed crackdown on crime and criminal networks.

Ebojele said the operation was carried out under “Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists”.

According to him, the operation involved the Edo State Security Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies under the supervision of senior security officials attached to the governor.

Secretary of the Edo State Security Squad, John Izegaegbe, said the intervention followed intelligence reports and field findings in the area.

Izegaegbe added that one of the sealed buildings in Ebhoijie-Uromi was linked to a disturbing discovery made in June.

“We are here on the order of Governor Monday Okpebholo, and, on getting here, we discovered that it is a ritual and murder case.

“It was further discovered, according to medical experts, that the body found in the building, which is the body of their gatekeeper, identified as Mildah Dalandi, had been decomposing for about one month in the apartment,” he said.

The state government reiterated that investigations were ongoing and assured residents that efforts to dismantle criminal networks across communities would continue.
