Lagos Govt enlists religious leaders in HIV prevention, anti-stigma campaign

The Lagos State government has called on religious leaders across the state to take a leading role in HIV prevention efforts and the fight against stigma associated with the disease.

The appeal was made through the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, LSACA, during a sensitisation workshop on HIV and AIDS prevention and HIV-related stigma held for religious leaders at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, in Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, stressed the important role faith leaders play in influencing public opinion, promoting healthy lifestyles and encouraging compassion towards people living with HIV.

Animashaun noted that although significant progress has been made in HIV treatment and care, stigma and discrimination remain major obstacles to ending the epidemic. According to her, fear of rejection and widespread misinformation continue to discourage many people from seeking testing, treatment and support services.

“HIV is no longer a death sentence. People living with HIV can live long, healthy, and productive lives with treatment. However, stigma continues to prevent many people from testing, seeking care, and speaking openly about their status,” she said.

She commended Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his continued support for public health programmes, stating that the workshop reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of residents.

The LSACA boss explained that religious institutions remain trusted centres within communities and are well positioned to provide accurate information about HIV, encourage voluntary testing, support treatment adherence and correct misconceptions surrounding the disease.

“Health education does not weaken faith; it protects lives, families, and communities. Together, we can build a Lagos where people are not afraid to know their status, where no one is rejected because of their health condition, and where compassion guides our response to HIV,” Dr. Animashaun added.

Also speaking, the representative of the National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmad Saheed, warned religious leaders against offering unverified remedies or medical advice that could put the health of people living with HIV and others at risk.

He emphasised the need for professional medical care and urged faith leaders to continually update their knowledge of public health issues in order to better support members of their congregations.

“A well-informed religious leader understands the need for professional medical care and is better positioned to support affected individuals with compassion and accurate guidance,” he stated.

In his remarks, the Presiding Chaplain of Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Rev. (Dr.) Ajayi, described the workshop as timely and impactful.

He highlighted the important role religious leaders play in raising awareness about HIV, reducing stigma and supporting those living with the condition.

“This training for religious leaders is a very wonderful one and very much needed at a time like this. Programmes like this educate us and help us to push advocacy further, especially for those of us who have the privilege and opportunity to address people regularly,” he said.

French Court confirms PSG defender, Hakimi will stand trial for rape

A French appeals court on Friday confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain defender, Achraf Hakimi, will face trial for the alleged rape of a woman.

In February 2023, a woman then aged 24 told police in the Val-de-Marne region, southeast of Paris, that Hakimi had raped her.

The PSG right-back and captain of the Moroccan national team, whose second match of the 2026 World Cup takes place on Friday against Scotland, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Shortly after the Versailles Court of Appeal delivered its ruling, Hakimi wrote on X that he had been “waiting for this trial since day one”.

“At last, I’ll be able to speak,” he said.

A date has not been announced for the start of the trial at the criminal court in the Hauts-de-Seine department.

“This confirmation was expected. Nothing here says that he is guilty of anything, he remains steadfast in his defence,” Hakimi’s lawyer Fanny Colin said.

Military raises fresh safety concerns on River Benue after boat mishap

The Maritime Component of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has issued a renewed safety warning to boat operators, passengers, and communities living along the River Benue following a recent boat mishap that claimed nine lives amid rising water levels.

The warning was conveyed by the Maritime Component Commander of OPWS, Lt. Cmdr. Christopher Zakari, through a statement released in Makurdi by the Acting Media Information Officer, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu.

According to Zakari, the increasing volume of water in the river, driven by persistent rainfall, has resulted in stronger currents and turbulence, creating dangerous conditions for water transportation.

He explained that the advisory became necessary in the aftermath of a tragic boat accident that occurred on June 13. The vessel, carrying 43 passengers from Kwanta Wadata to Daudu, reportedly capsized between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., leaving nine people dead.

Zakari noted that compliance with established maritime safety regulations could have either prevented the accident or significantly reduced the number of casualties recorded.

As part of the safety directives, he instructed all passengers and river users to wear life jackets at all times while travelling by boat. He also urged boat operators to provide at least one life buoy on every vessel.

The commander further warned against carrying passengers beyond approved limits and advised operators to equip their boats with critical emergency items, including working torchlights, spare spark plugs, and tarpaulins.

In addition, Zakari appealed to mariners to keep waterways clean by avoiding the disposal of non-biodegradable materials and other forms of waste into rivers.

Reaffirming existing regulations, he stressed that night-time navigation remains prohibited, noting that boat operations are only permitted between 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily due to security considerations.

He also directed all boat operators to register with their respective unions and ensure they possess valid identification while carrying out their activities.

Residents of riverine settlements were encouraged to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious movements or criminal activities to security agencies.

Zakari warned that individuals who disregard the safety directives would face sanctions under applicable regulations. He also called on maritime unions to enforce compliance among their members.

“The maritime component of Operation Whirl Stroke remains committed to safeguarding lives, protecting property and ensuring the security of waterways within its area of responsibility,” he said.

The commander further appealed to the public to support security agencies by observing all safety guidelines and maintaining vigilance while using the waterways.

  • Payaza launches AI-powered storefront, Shopaza for Africa’s cross-border commerce

Payaza launches AI-powered storefront, Shopaza for Africa’s cross-border commerce

Payaza Africa Limited, a leading payments infrastructure company, has unveiled Shopaza, a smart, AI-driven e-commerce platform designed to help African businesses and merchants sell and receive payments more efficiently across-borders.

According to the company, Shopaza enables merchants to access a robust, compliant, and scalable financial backbone, empowering them to sell seamlessly across international markets.

The platform was launched on Thursday in Lagos and is live in the 23 countries across Africa, North America, and Europe where Payaza currently operates.

Speaking at the launch, Seyi Ebenezer, Chief Executive Officer of Payaza Africa, described Shopaza as a major step toward unlocking Africa’s commerce potential.

“Africa’s commerce potential has always been there. What was missing was the infrastructure to unlock it.

“At Payaza, we have spent years building the payments backbone that businesses across this continent rely on. Shopaza is the natural next step—taking everything we have built and putting it directly in the hands of merchants who deserve better tools, better access, and better opportunities.

“Today, we are not just launching a product. We are making a statement that African businesses can compete and win on a global scale. Shopaza is live in 23 countries. The infrastructure is ready, the vision is clear, and we are just getting started,” he said.

Also speaking, Sola Ashiru, Group Head of Marketing and Communications at Payaza Africa, said the platform was developed after a comprehensive assessment of the African e-commerce landscape.

“We studied the African e-commerce ecosystem carefully and identified three critical gaps holding merchants back: limited access to AI-powered tools, weak payments infrastructure, and a broken settlement process. Shopaza was built specifically to close those gaps.

“This is not a rushed product; it is a well-thought-out solution to the most persistent pain points in African commerce Today. While we are launching in Nigeria, our operational footprint already spans Africa, North America, and Europe.

“We have also established partnerships with local entities across key markets to drive grassroots adoption. Ultimately, we have solved an African problem, and Africans need to know about it,” he said.

Ashiru further explained that Shopaza offers an all-in-one solution designed to simplify selling and accelerate business growth for merchants.

“The platform features AI-powered onboarding and smart selling tools that enable users to set up quickly, manage storefronts with ease, and optimise pricing and product listings for improved performance.

“Shopaza also provides free, integrated marketing tools to boost visibility and help merchants attract and retain customers without additional costs,” Ashiru noted.

At the event, industry stakeholders spoke on the theme: Building a Scalable E-Commerce Business Across Africa. Panelists included Tracy Ajoku, founder of Saint Tracy’s; Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze, founder of AccountingHub and Chioma Business School; Ola Daramola, CEO and co-founder of Bluebulb Financials; Kelechi Ekugo, Senior Country Director, US-Nigeria Council for Food Security, Trade & Investment and Seun Alley, founder and CEO of Fez Delivery.

Payaza Africa provides payment infrastructure solutions focused on collections, payouts, embedded finance, and digital commerce enablement for businesses across Africa.

The company recently secured strong ratings from four major agencies, reinforcing its credibility in Africa’s financial services space. Payaza recorded across-the-board upgrades, with DataPro moving it from A to AA-, while Intelligence Africa, Agusto, and GCR – a Moody’s affiliate, all rated it A-.

  • CSOs Raise Alarm Over Delay In Child Online Bill Passage

CSOs Raise Alarm Over Delay In Child Online Bill Passage

A coalition of 56 civil society organisations (CSOs) has urged the Senate Committee on Rules and Business to prioritise consideration of the Child Online Access Protection Bill before the National Assembly proceeds on recess.

It warned that further delays could undermine efforts to strengthen online safety for millions of Nigerian children.

The call came at a time when governments around the world are advancing measures to improve child safety online.

Recent developments in the United Kingdom, including proposals to strengthen protections for children using digital platforms, reflect a broader international trend
towards greater accountability for technology companies and safer online experiences for young
    users.

The coalition includes Gatefield Impact Foundation, Paradigm Initiative, Avocats Sans Frontières France (Lawyers Without Borders France), Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre, Mothers and Marginalised Advocacy Centre, and the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (FCT Chapter).

In a jointly signed petition, the coalition argued that Nigeria has an opportunity to advance a legislative framework that reflects its own context while ensuring children can safely access the benefits of the digital
    world.

“With one of Africa’s largest youth populations and rapidly growing internet adoption, Nigerian children are increasingly learning, socialising, and participating in civic life online.

    “At the same
time, evidence points to persistent risks, including exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, online exploitation, and other digital harms”, it stated.

Research cited by the coalition indicates that 79 per cent of Nigerian children report feeling unsafe online, while nearly nine in ten have experienced at least one form of online harm, including exposure to unsolicited sexual content.

Gatefield’s 2025 State of Online Harms Report
Also found that 31 per cent of harmful content reported by users in Nigeria was not removed by
    platforms despite being flagged.

According to the coalition, the Child Online Access Protection Bill is intended to promote safer digital environments for children without restricting their access to the internet or limiting opportunities for learning, creativity, innovation, and participation in the digital economy.

It stated that among its objectives, the bill would establish clearer responsibilities for digital platforms operating in Nigeria, encourage age-appropriate and safety-by-design approaches, promote
Greater transparency and accountability, and strengthen safeguards against harmful and exploitative online content.

“The House of Representatives has already advanced the legislation. As the Senate prepares for recess, the coalition urges the Committee on Rules and Business to facilitate its timely
consideration so that deliberations on the proposed framework can continue without unnecessary delay.

“Protecting children online is fundamentally about ensuring that digital spaces are safe by
design and fit for young users.
As countries continue to strengthen safeguards for children in the digital age, Nigeria has an opportunity to develop a balanced, locally grounded framework that protects children’s rights while supporting digital inclusion and innovation”, the coalition stated.

The coalition emphasised that safeguarding children online is a child rights issue, a public policy priority, and an investment in Nigeria’s future.

It called on lawmakers to ensure that the Child
Online Access Protection Bill receives timely attention as part of the Senate’s legislative process
    agenda.
