  • Ekiti Poll: South-West APC Hails Voters, Celebrates Oyebanji’s Victory

Ekiti Poll: South-West APC Hails Voters, Celebrates Oyebanji’s Victory

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West geopolitical zone has commended voters in Ekiti State for turning out in large numbers to re-elect Governor Biodun Oyebanji for another four-year term.

The party said the outcome of the election further confirmed Ekiti people as informed citizens who consistently make decisions in the best interest of their state and the country.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Monday by the zonal Publicity Secretary, Ayobami Afolabi, the APC described Oyebanji’s victory as “not only unprecedented but a testament to the fact that most Nigerians appreciate the quality leadership being offered by both the governor and President Bola Tinubu.”

Governor Biodun Oyebanji emerged winner of the Ekiti State governorship election held on Saturday, defeating candidates of 13 political parties. The victory also made him the first sitting governor in the state’s history to secure re-election.

Afolabi said about 90 per cent of the total votes cast across the 16 local government areas of the state went to the APC candidate, reflecting the confidence of the electorate in the party.

“About 90 per cent of the total votes cast in the 16 local government areas across Ekiti State on Saturday went to the candidate of our great party, and this speaks volumes of the decision of the good people of the state to keep faith with the Broom Party,” he said.

He added that the party would not take the mandate for granted, noting that the governor and other elected officials had been challenged to intensify efforts in delivering quality leadership, innovation and effective service delivery.

Afolabi expressed optimism ahead of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State, saying the poll would provide an opportunity for voters to elect leadership capable of advancing the state’s development.

“In less than two months, Osun State will also go to the polls, and we believe that it would be an opportunity for the voters in that state not only to return to mainstream politics but also to elect a governor they can be proud of anywhere in the world,” he said.

He also urged stakeholders across the South-West to revive the developmental ideals championed by the region’s founding fathers, particularly the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“The best time is now for the entire South-West people to rediscover the magic wand with which the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his team positioned the region above its peers in the 1950s and 1960s, and none of the six states in the geopolitical zone can afford to be left behind,” he said.

While appreciating Ekiti voters for retaining the party in power, Afolabi urged them to further support the APC and President Bola Tinubu in future elections.

“When they do this, greater dividends of democracy would come to them, and they would have their names etched in gold,” he added.

China slaps sanctions on 10 US companies in retaliation for blacklist of Chinese firms

China has slapped export controls on 10 United States companies involved in defence and rare earths mining.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said this in a statement on Monday.

The ministry stressed that the sanction is in response to Washington’s blacklist of Chinese firms.

This followed US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing, seeking to stabilise fraught relations during talks with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

The two countries agreed to work towards reducing tariffs, but ties have since been tested as both sides stunt the other in tech and defence.

Recall that the US released a new blacklist this month of 80 companies and their subsidiaries, which it said were aiding the Chinese military.

That saw tech giants Alibaba and Baidu added, as well as electric vehicle giant BYD, prompting Beijing to threaten retaliation.

“These new export controls are in response to the US government’s egregious act of adding to its so-called ‘Chinese military enterprise list,” the statement said.

The 10 entities include Aveox, which holds aerospace defence contracts with the US military, and Oshkosh Defense, which produces military vehicle fleets.

It also listed US rare earths producers MP Materials and USA Rare Earth, among others.

Akwa Ibom: ‘Say something, win something’ – Gov Eno promises reward for security intelligence

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has introduced a reward system for those who offer actionable security intelligence to forestall security breaches in the state.

Speaking at a strategic engagement meeting in Uyo with youth leaders drawn from all villages, the governor emphasised that credible information that helps security agencies prevent crime and apprehend criminals would be rewarded.

The Governor, who did not mention the amount to be given, explained, “We have always said, ‘If you see something, say something.’ Today, we are taking it a step further. If you see something, say something and win something. Credible information that helps security agencies prevent crime and apprehend criminals will be rewarded.”

He also announced the integration of 2,272 Village Youth Presidents across the state into the security architecture to strengthen intelligence gathering and deepen youth participation in governance.

He charged the village youth presidents to discharge their duties with patriotism and honesty, working closely with village heads, clan heads, paramount rulers, local government chairmen, and security agencies.

He also urged them to mobilize residents for civic participation, including the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

The governor observed that villages remain the first line of defence, in any society as people know one another in their communities, and they can easily identify strange movements and suspicious activities, saying “youth leaders will serve as vital links between local communities, traditional institutions, and security agencies to facilitate intelligence flow and strengthen vigilance at the grassroots.”,

He also directed security agencies to develop comprehensive training programmes for the youth leaders and integrate them into the state’s community security framework. He announced plans to expand the state’s Quick Response Force to cover all ten federal constituencies for faster emergency response even as he warned that the arrangement would not shield individuals involved in unlawful acts.

He said security remains a collective responsibility and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property through community-based approaches.

Abiodun assures safety as Ogun relocates students over methane gas pollution

The Ogun State Government has temporarily relocated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode, to an alternative location as investigations into the recent chemical inhalation incident on the school premises intensify.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment of the school, noting that preliminary findings have confirmed the presence of methane gas in the affected area.

The governor explained that the relocation became necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students, teachers, and other members of the school community, while also creating an enabling environment for experts to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the source and cause of the contamination.

He noted that the state government, through the Ministries of Environment and Health, is collaborating with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Department of Geology, Olabisi Onabanjo University, to determine the root cause of the incident.

“Twice now, we have recorded cases of pollution in this school and some neighbouring schools.

“What is interesting is that the gas pollution occurred at about the same time in the affected schools—about three schools altogether—and this has happened on two separate occasions.

“Following the first occurrence, we installed gas analysers across the schools to determine the nature and concentration of the gas, which has now been confirmed to be methane.

“Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions.

“We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” he said.

Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives of students, teachers, and residents of the affected communities, stressing that every necessary measure would be taken to identify the source of the pollution and prevent a recurrence.

He assured residents that the government remains focused on safeguarding public health and environmental safety, adding that updates would be provided as investigations progress.

“In the meantime, we have evacuated the students from the school. The rumour that these incidents are being deliberately targeted at schools is unfounded and should be disregarded. This appears to be a natural occurrence, and we are determined to get to the bottom of it.

“The students have been moved out temporarily, and until we are satisfied that the environment is completely safe and conducive for learning, they will not return. We will continue to investigate the cause of this situation and take all necessary steps to address it,” the governor added.
