  • 2027: Why INEC restored me as SDP National Chairman – Gombe

2027: Why INEC restored me as SDP National Chairman – Gombe

The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Sadiq Abubakar Gombe, has explained why the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, updated its portal to reflect his leadership and that of other members of the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, ahead of 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists on Monday in Abuja, Gombe said INEC restored his name and those of other NWC members on its portal after conducting a thorough review of documents and decisions submitted by the party.

According to him, the electoral body requested details relating to the party’s convention, disciplinary actions, appointments, elections of the National Working Committee, presidential candidate, and other candidates before arriving at its decision.

He further attributed INEC’s decision to the party’s commitment to due process.

“Then on the 10th of this month, the INEC Commission requested the details of our convention and all other decisions of the National Working Committee in respect of the disciplinary measure and in respect of our appointments and in respect of our elections of the party National Working Committee and the presidential candidate and all other candidates across the board.

“So INEC, after that review, they now come to the conclusion through an extract of the commission—of the commission that reaffirms our leadership as the authentic leadership of the party and return.

*Even then, on 10th June 2026, after that, it took them almost one week before they now re-load our name on their portal as the substantive leaders of the party, with my name as the national chairman of the party and all the other members of the National Working Committee,” he said.

Gombe said the development demonstrated the importance of following due process in resolving political disputes and urged other political parties to remain committed to lawful procedures.

“So, this, I think, I want to use this opportunity to call all other political parties—sister political parties alike in Nigeria—to remain resolute, committed, and silent in whatever they are doing and follow due process. Because it’s only due process that led us to where we are today. If not, we follow due process, we remain committed, we remain patient, and we diligently follow our case; that is why we are where we are.

“And I want to assure you that today in Nigeria, the SDP stands out as the best party with the best lessons to be learned by all political parties, INEC, and the judiciary, because we follow due process in whatever we are doing. And that is why we are where we are today.”

He also appealed to Nigerians and party members to remain confident in the SDP, describing it as a credible alternative capable of producing quality leadership for the country.

“And I want to use this opportunity, in between the lines, for members of the party we have put into this array and a lot of doubts and negative perspectives about the party; I want to call on all Nigerians. The party remains the ideological party that they knew.

“The party remains resolute to usher in credible candidates at all levels to be presented for Nigeria. The party is that alternative that Nigerians are yearning and aspiring and waiting for. And I want to assure you that we are not going to let you down,” he told journalists at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

Recall that INEC recently updated its portal, listing Gombe as the SDP National Chairman and removing the name of Shehu Gabam.

Veteran Group Reaffirms Support For Nnamdi Kanu, Urges Unity

A group identifying itself as Biafran Veterans has reaffirmed its support for the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, urging Biafrans to remain united and disciplined amid internal divisions within the movement.

A statement issued on Monday and signed by Elder Sunday I. Nwokejie G.C of Biafraland and Colonel Emma U. Kalu, the group declared its “total, unwavering support” for Kanu, whom it described as the “Supreme Leader of IPOB and the arrowhead of the Biafra Restoration struggle.”

The veterans praised Kanu’s sacrifices, saying he had remained steadfast despite years of detention and hardship.

“Onyendu is a man who has been tested by fire. He cannot be bought. He is incorruptible. He has sacrificed more than any person alive for Biafra.

“He gave up comfort and safety to speak for our people. He has endured illegal detention, suffering, and years in prison without committing any crime,” the statement read.

The group further described Kanu as “the face of Biafra the whole world knows,” adding that “his plans protected our land from large-scale Fulani attacks.”

Reaffirming its loyalty, the veterans stated, “We stand 100% behind him. No one can challenge his God-given mandate to restore Biafra.”

The statement also criticized individuals allegedly fueling divisions within the pro-Biafra movement.

“Those making noise and causing division are people who have endured very little of what Onyendu has borne. As veterans who have seen many seasons of the struggle, we know genuine leadership when we see it. Onyendu remains our leader,” it said.

Calling for unity, the group urged Biafrans to “close ranks, stay united, disciplined, and focused,” while also expressing support for the “4th Directorate of State.”

“This is not the time for division or personal ambition. It is time to stand firmly behind our leader,” the statement added.

Addressing Kanu directly, the veterans said, “Remain strong. Millions stand with you. We pray daily for your immediate and unconditional release. Your sacrifices will not be in vain. Victory is coming.”

IPOB has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government, a designation the group rejects.

Kanu was convicted in 2025 on terrorism-related charges and is serving a life sentence in Sokoto Prison.

Navy uncovers hidden fuel stash, recovers 63,290 litres of diesel in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy said it has recorded another operational success under Operation Delta Sentinel with the discovery of a concealed cache of suspected illegally refined petroleum products and the interception of a vehicle believed to be part of an illicit fuel distribution network in Rivers State.

A statement signed by Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, Director of Naval Information, said acting on credible intelligence, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS, Soroh were deployed to the Okolomade community axis of Abua-Odual Local Government Area, where intelligence indicated the movement of suspected illegally refined products within the Orashi Forest corridor.

According to the statement, during the operation, the team intercepted a silver colored Toyota Camry suspected to be conveying illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, AGO.

“A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of about 17 sacks containing suspected illegally refined AGO,” it said, adding that “Further exploitation of the area revealed additional concealed stockpiles hidden under thick vegetation at multiple locations within the forest.”

It added that subsequent ground searches resulted in the recovery of an additional 56 sacks of suspected illegally refined AGO strategically dispersed across the area, adding that in total, the operation led to the recovery of 73 sacks containing approximately 63,290 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO, as well as the vehicle believed to have been used for transportation.

The Navy said the discovery highlighted the increasing use of forest corridors and concealed storage points by criminal elements seeking to move illegally refined petroleum products  from  remote  locations  into  distribution  channels.

“The  operation therefore disrupted another critical link in the illicit petroleum value chain.

“The recovered products were handled in accordance with extant regulations, while the vehicle was secured for further necessary action,” the statement added.

‘I will not enter Black Maria’ – Sowore clashes with DSS operatives after court order [VIDEO]

Following an Abuja Federal High Court order remanding activist Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, a tense exchange occurred between the activist and operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, in the premises of the court.

In a video circulating online, Sowore is seen resisting attempts by DSS operatives to transport him in a Black Maria van.

“What did I do? Do you want to put me in a Black Maria? We can get an Uber because I will not enter this car because of my back.

“Even if you want the guests to follow us, let them provide another vehicle. I will follow them, but don’t put me in a Black Maria,” Sowore said during the encounter.

DAILY POST had earlier reported the Abuja  Federal High Court ordered Sowore’s remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre until Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when his motion to stay the order revoking his bail and bench warrant will be heard.

In the case filed by the DSS, Sowore was accused of cyberstalking and criminal defamation after he labeled President Tinubu a “criminal” in an August 2025 social media post.
