Fresh Lakurawa threats revive fears in Niger, IGP orders intervention — DIG

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Training and Development and Coordinating DIG, North-Central Geo-Political Zone, Isyaku Mohammed, has moved to calm fresh fears in Niger State following reports that suspected Lakurawa terrorists blocked the New Bussa road in Borgu Local Government Area and issued warnings of planned attacks on Friday.

The development comes barely two weeks after rumours of bandit attacks on schools triggered panic and disrupted learning in parts of the state, renewing concerns among parents and residents.

Speaking during a two-day working visit to the Niger State Police Command headquarters in Minna, DIG Mohammed assured residents that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was on top of the situation and had directed immediate interventions.

He expressed confidence that attacks on schools and communities would soon become a thing of the past.

“Precisely, that’s why I am here, to look at the peculiar challenges confronting Niger State. The IGP is passionate about the situation. I have told the Commissioner of Police to draw up an intervention plan and the IGP will surely intervene,” he said.

The DIG also sought to calm fears over rumours of attacks on schools, saying the Force has already activated mechanisms aimed at protecting educational institutions and ensuring children continue their studies without intimidation.

“I want to assure parents and children that the IGP is on top of the situation. We have a School Protection Unit headed by a Chief Superintendent of Police, and we are providing all the necessary support.

“We have also outlined protocols for school owners to follow so that we can mitigate this madness of attacks on schools. Very soon, these attacks will be a thing of the past,” he maintained.

Mohammed disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police had deployed all Deputy Inspectors-General to their respective geo-political zones to assess peculiar security challenges and appreciate officers and men for their sacrifices and commitment in the fight against crime.

He called on stakeholders, community leaders, and residents to support security agencies with credible information and collective efforts to tackle criminality.

“The fight against crime is a collective responsibility. We need the support of all stakeholders and members of the public. Together, we will overcome these challenges,” the DIG said.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Elleman, told the DIG that Niger State’s vast landmass, difficult terrain, and extensive forests had continued to pose serious operational challenges, especially in Zone C, comprising Agwara, Borgu, Kontagora, Magama, Mariga, Mashegu, Rijau, and Wushishi local government areas.

According to the CP, sustained operations against bandits had forced criminal elements into desperate retaliatory attacks on security formations and vulnerable communities.

He recalled that bandits attacked St. Mary’s School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area on November 21, 2025, before attacking the Agwara Divisional Police Headquarters and a church in February this year.

The CP added that the command lost two officers during an attack on a Police Mobile Force camp in Agwara.

Despite the challenges, Elleman said the command had recorded successes through intelligence-led operations, including the arrest of bandits and their collaborators, disruption of kidnapping syndicates, dismantling of armed robbery networks, recovery of illegal firearms, and reduction of thuggery and youth restiveness.

He, however, appealed for additional personnel, armoured personnel carriers, operational vehicles, surveillance drones, night-vision equipment, and other tactical assets to strengthen security operations across the state.

The CP also assured the DIG that the command enjoyed robust collaboration with sister security agencies and local vigilante groups, noting that the synergy had continued to frustrate the activities of criminal elements across the state.

I’m deeply saddened, horrified – El-Rufai’s son decries lynching of teacher in Kaduna

Lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, has condemned the killing of a teacher identified simply as Ummulkhairi by a mob.

DAILY POST reports that the woman was lynched in Mararaban Jos, a community along the Kaduna-Zaria highway, on Sunday after being falsely accused of attempting to kidnap children.

Reacting, El-Rufai in a statement on Tuesday lamented how an innocent woman whose only “offence” was asking for directions to attend a lecture, was subjected to an act of unimaginable cruelty.

According to the lawmaker, the barbaric act is a “stain on our collective conscience”, stating that no “suspicion or allegation without evidence can ever justify mob violence”.

The statement added, “The sanctity of human life is fundamental to both our faith and our laws, yet she was denied due process and killed in the most inhumane manner.

“Equally disturbing is the reported presence of security personnel at the scene, yet without effective intervention. Every Nigerian deserves the full protection of the law, and jungle justice must never be normalised under any circumstances.

“Beyond this incident, I strongly condemn the rising pattern of mob violence across the country, often fuelled by rumours, misinformation, and instant judgment. No society can thrive where citizens take the law into their own hands.

“I call on security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure that all those responsible, direct perpetrators, instigators, and any negligent actors are brought to justice. Stronger preventive measures must also be urgently put in place to prevent a recurrence.

“My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May Allah (SWT) forgive her shortcomings, grant her Al-Jannah Firdaus, and comfort her loved ones.May justice prevail.”

  • Fitch Warns Nigeria’s $5bn TRS Deal Could Intensify FX Pressures

Fitch Warns Nigeria’s $5bn TRS Deal Could Intensify FX Pressures

Fitch Ratings has warned that Nigeria’s planned $5bn total return swap (TRS) financing arrangement with First Abu Dhabi Bank could increase foreign exchange (FX) pressures, deepen sovereign debt risks and weaken transparency in public debt reporting.

The rating agency raised the concerns in a report titled “Emerging Market Sovereigns’ Use of Total Return Swaps Raises Risks”, published on June 19, where it examined the growing use of derivatives-based financing structures by emerging economies.

According to Fitch, Nigeria’s proposed transaction, under which about $6.67bn worth of naira-denominated government bonds would be pledged as collateral for hard-currency funding, could expose the country to additional vulnerabilities during periods of economic stress.

It noted that margin calls under the arrangement would likely be payable in US dollars, even though the underlying collateral is denominated in naira.
Fitch said this structure could intensify FX pressures if domestic bond yields rise or if the naira weakens, potentially forcing the government to mobilise scarce foreign currency resources at inopportune times.

The agency also warned that such arrangements can become procyclical, requiring additional collateral or repayments when external liquidity conditions are already tightening.

Nigeria’s public debt stock stood at $110.3bn (about N159.2tn) as of December 31, 2025, according to official data cited in the report.

The warning comes as Nigeria pursues broader external borrowing plans approved by the National Assembly on March 31, including President Bola Tinubu’s $6bn external financing request.

The package includes two separate facilities from the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, one of which is the proposed TRS arrangement with First Abu Dhabi Bank valued at up to $5bn.

Fitch noted that while total return swaps can provide liquidity, diversify funding sources and reduce borrowing costs relative to conventional borrowing, they often fall outside traditional debt reporting frameworks.

This, it said, may reduce legislative oversight and obscure the true scale of sovereign liabilities.

“Material gaps in transparency may also weigh on Fitch’s Issuer Default Rating assessment,” the agency stated, adding that such structures are typically documented under derivative agreements whose terms are only partially disclosed.

The rating agency further explained that in most TRS arrangements, governments issue bonds without selling them in the market but transfer the economic exposure of those instruments to a counterparty in exchange for cash.

In many cases, only the cash received is recorded as external debt, while the pledged securities are treated as contingent liabilities, potentially leaving them outside standard debt statistics.

Fitch cautioned that this accounting treatment can mask the true extent of a country’s obligations and complicate debt sustainability analysis.

It added that the legal structure of such deals, often classified as derivatives rather than conventional loans, can also allow them to bypass normal parliamentary scrutiny.

Despite the risks, Fitch acknowledged that such instruments can be attractive to sovereigns with liquidity constraints or elevated borrowing costs, as they can provide hard-currency financing even during challenging market conditions.

However, the agency maintained that Nigeria’s proposed structure appears to be driven more by funding diversification and liquidity management objectives than by lack of access to international capital markets, noting that the country has continued to tap global markets through Eurobond issuances.

The warning from Fitch follows a similar caution issued by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on June 10, which also advised Nigeria to carefully assess risks associated with borrowing through derivatives-based arrangements linked to First Abu Dhabi Bank.

Analysts say the growing reliance on complex financing structures could heighten scrutiny of Nigeria’s debt strategy at a time when fiscal pressures, currency volatility and rising external obligations continue to shape macroeconomic policy decisions.
