  • Trump Orders Probe Into Alleged Gas Price Gouging In the U.S.

Trump Orders Probe Into Alleged Gas Price Gouging In the U.S.

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to launch an immediate investigation into major oil companies, accusing them of inflating prices at the pump despite a sharp decline in crude oil costs.

The President made this directive early on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, via a post shared on his Truth Social platform.

In the post, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the pace at which retail fuel prices are falling compared to the global crude market.

“The big Oil Companies are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for Oil. Those prices are dropping like a rock! In other words, customers are being ‘gouged’,” Trump wrote.

“I have instructed the DOJ to immediately start looking into this. Gasoline prices better start going down a lot faster than what I’m seeing!” he added.

The directive follows recent diplomatic developments between the U.S. and Iran aimed at restoring shipping lanes through the critical Strait of Hormuz, which has caused global crude oil prices to tumble.

On Wednesday, the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude dipped below $70 per barrel for the first time since March, closing down roughly 4 per cent at $70.22.

The international benchmark, Brent crude, similarly fell by 4.2 per cent to settle at $73.83 per barrel.

Despite the plunge in crude oil benchmarks, retail gasoline prices in the United States have seen a slower decline.

According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the U.S. national average for a gallon of regular gasoline stood at $3.92, down from over $4.50 a month prior, but still elevated relative to the rapid drop in crude futures.

The oil industry has strongly pushed back against the President’s allegations of deliberate price manipulation.

The American Petroleum Institute (API), an organisation representing major U.S. oil and gas corporations, stated that retail fuel prices do not instantly mirror crude oil market fluctuations.

“Gasoline prices don’t move in lockstep with crude oil, especially during a major global disruption that is still affecting supply, refining and inventories,” API spokesperson Bethany Williams clarified.

Energy experts have also weighed in, labelling the administration’s aggressive posture as a political manoeuvre ahead of the upcoming U.S. congressional midterm elections.

The U.S. Department of Justice has yet to issue a public statement regarding the implementation or scope of the mandated investigation.

FHA Flags Off 213 Housing Units, Promises Timely Delivery

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA) on Wednesday commenced the construction of a 213-unit housing estate along Wasa Expressway, Wasa, Abuja.

It assured prospective homeowners that the project would be delivered as promised to expand access to affordable housing in Nigeria.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the FHA Managing Director, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, said the estate named “FHA Green City Estate”, is being developed in partnership with Greenpasture Homes Limited.

Represented by the agency’s Executive Director, Estate Services, Arch. Nya-Etok Ezekiel), Ojo said the estate comprises 80 two-bedroom flats, 56 three-bedroom flats, 35 three-bedroom terrace duplexes and 45 four-bedroom terrace duplexes.

He said all the housing units were designed to meet modern housing needs with emphasis on comfort, security, functionality and environmental sustainability.

Ojo assured subscribers that the Authority had strengthened its project execution processes to eliminate the problem of abandoned housing schemes, stressing that the current management is committed to fulfilling every promise made to Nigerians seeking home ownership.

According to him, the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places affordable housing at the centre of national development.

“Upon completion, this estate will stand as a model residential community while giving more Nigerians the opportunity to own decent homes,” he said.

The FHA boss praised Greenpasture Homes Limited for partnering with the Authority, describing the collaboration as proof that public-private partnerships remain the most sustainable approach to addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit.

He recalled that both organisations had, in May, flagged off another 200-unit housing estate at Ofada in the Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, adding that the growing partnership is helping to accelerate housing delivery nationwide.
Ojo said the FHA has also repositioned itself institutionally.

He disclosed that the Authority had secured land in 28 states for new housing developments and has begun procurement and construction processes in several locations, including Umuahia, Uyo and Kaduna.

Also speaking, the President and Chairman of the Council of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), HRM Oba Akintoye Adeoye, described the FHA Green City Estate as another milestone for the country’s housing sector.

Adeoye, who is also the Olu-Oke of Oke-Igbo in Ondo State, said the project demonstrates the impact of effective collaboration between government and private developers in tackling Nigeria’s housing shortage.

He reaffirmed REDAN’s commitment to supporting policies that promote affordable housing, improve access to housing finance and create an enabling environment for developers.

PDP presents certificates of return to guber candidates in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has presented Certificates of Return to its governorship candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The certificates were presented at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja, which brought together members of the interim National Working Committee, iNWC, the Board of Trustees, BoT, state chairmen, and governorship candidates.

The event was presided over by the National Chairman of the iNWC, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

Speaking on behalf of the state chairmen, Dupe Aisida, Esq., said,”The INWC is the oxygen of the party”, noting that the committee has been providing everything required for the sustenance of the party at the state levels.

He applauded the INWC for its vision and determination, adding that its focus on moving forward despite all odds has enabled the party to achieve this milestone.

According to him, “Even though nobody thought the party could survive the onslaught of the APC Federal Government which had made things difficult for both the opposition and the country, the INWC weathered the storm and kept the party on its feet.”

The high point of the event was the formal presentation of Certificates of Return to all gubernatorial candidates by the iNWC.

This presentation marks the official ratification of the candidates’ victories following the party’s recent primary elections.

Responding on behalf of the gubernatorial candidates, Barr. Benedict Etanabene said, “We did not take any risk by picking tickets under the Turaki-led PDP, because as a lawyer i know that this is the authentic and mainstream party.”

He also commended the PDP leadership under Turaki, adding that the only time Nigerians experienced meaningful leadership was when the presidential candidate of the party, Goodluck Jonathan, was at the helm of affairs as President of the country.

The gubernatorial candidate of the party for Adamawa State also commended the leadership for its impeccable management of the party.

Andrew expressed optimism that the party under the leadership of Kabiru Turaki will not only win at the state levels but will also secure victory at the national level.

The candidates assured the party of their commitment and pledged to continue supporting and working with the leadership ahead of the general elections.
