Alleged N109.5bn Fraud: Court Adjourns Former AGF’s Trial

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday adjourned proceedings in the trial-within-trial involving former Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Ahmed Idris, who is facing charges over the alleged diversion of N109.5bn in public funds.

The trial judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, ordered the adjournment following the conclusion of testimony from a defense witness regarding how the anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), obtained statements from the former AGF.

EFCC is prosecuting Idris alongside Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

The defendants face a 14-count charge bordering on stealing and the fraudulent diversion of public funds totalling N109.5bn.

The ongoing trial-within-trial was originally ordered by the court on November 22, 2022.

This followed an application by Idris’ lead counsel, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, who argued that statements made by the former AGF to the EFCC were obtained involuntarily through deception and inducement.

At the resumed hearing, the defence called Hajiya Safiya Idris, who testified that EFCC officials asked her to sign as a witness to a statement made by Idris and assured her he would be released. She maintained that she signed the document on that basis.

During cross-examination by prosecution counsel A.O. Atolagbe, the witness admitted that she was never under investigation or officially invited by the anti-graft agency, having gone to the EFCC office of her own volition.

Following her testimony, Justice Halilu adjourned the matter until October 13, 2026, for both parties to adopt their final written addresses on the voluntariness of the defendant’s statements.

  • Enugu Governor Commissions DNA Centre To Fight Crimes

Enugu Governor Commissions DNA Centre To Fight Crimes

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, Wednesday, commissioned the Centre for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI) aimed at promptly tracking criminal activities in the state and beyond.

THE WHISTLER gathered that the initiative was in partnership with Godfrey Okoye University, and the Nigeria DNA Learning Centre. The event held at the university’s complex, Ugwuomu, Nike, Enugu.

Mbah described the Centre as one of the most important investments by his administration in the state’s security architecture in line with the Citizens’ Charter. He said while his administration had significantly reduced crimes, more work needed to be done.

In his words, “That is why we continue to invest, continue to innovate, and continue to strengthen the systems that keep our people safe. That brings us to why we are here today.

“The Centre strengthens our ability to investigate crimes, track criminals, support the work of law enforcement, and ensure that those who threaten the peace of our communities have fewer and fewer places to hide. Every crime scene leaves a trace. And we can now track that trace and use it as evidence.”

Mbah said the emergence of the Centre also comes with responsibilities and new ways of doing things for Enugu residents.

He said, “Henceforth, when crimes occur, keep a safe distance, promptly alert the authorities, and allow trained professionals to carry out their work. Every footprint, fingerprint, strand of hair, blood sample, or biological trace may contain crucial evidence. Once contaminated, such evidence may be lost.”

He said the Centre, though located in Enugu State, remains open for use by relevant agencies, organisations, professionals, and governments beyond its borders.

“This facility may be located here, but its significance extends far beyond our borders. It is our contribution to the quest for a justice system that is guided not by conjecture, but by evidence; not by suspicion, but by science.”

He lauded President Bola Tinubu’s policies, noting that “these reforms have allowed more funds to flow to states, enabling us to develop infrastructure at scale, including strengthening our security.”

He said the partnership with Godfrey Okoye University was consistent with his administration’s broader vision to create an ecosystem where learning institutions are not isolated from society’s challenges but are active participants in solving them.

Speaking, the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, said, “The establishment of CeDFoCI places Enugu and Nigeria on the path of advanced jurisdictions that have integrated forensic science into the core of their security and justice architecture.

“This facility will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s forensic science capacity. It will equip law enforcement agencies with modern tools for criminal investigation, provide prosecutors with credible scientific evidence, assist the courts in reaching just outcomes, and improve the overall administration of criminal justice.”

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, commended the state and university’s collaboration, adding that CeDFoCI would strengthen the capacity and work of the police and build citizens’ confidence in the system.

“For the Nigeria Police Force, this Centre represents enormous opportunities to strengthen investigations into homicide, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, sexual offences, human trafficking, missing persons, and other grave crimes.

“This Centre will equally provide opportunities for specialised training, scientific research, professional development, and knowledge exchange that will continue to improve investigative standards across our police formations,” he said.

Sokoto Court Sentences Nigerien, Two Others To Death For Terrorism

A High Court in Sokoto has sentenced a foreign national and two other persons to death by hanging after finding them guilty of terrorism and arms trafficking offences.

The convicts, identified as Jabbi Alhaji Yalle, a citizen of the Republic of Niger, Yusuf Muhammad, also known as Sallau, and Kabiru Muhammad, were sentenced by Justice Nuraddeen Muhammad Bello of High Court No. 23, Sokoto.

Delivering judgment in the case marked SS/45C/2026, Justice Bello held that the prosecution had successfully proved the charges of terrorism and arms proliferation against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge stated that the weight of evidence presented before the court established the culpability of the three accused persons, leading to their conviction and subsequent death sentence.

Justice Bello also ordered that all monetary exhibits recovered from the convicts during investigations be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The three men were arrested on June 13, 2025, by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) Counter-Terrorism Unit over their alleged involvement in cross-border criminal activities linked to arms trafficking and terrorism.

According to security sources, investigations revealed that the convicts were involved in the movement and supply of arms used in criminal and terrorist operations.

The judgment has been welcomed by residents of Sokoto, who commended the DSS for its efforts in combating terrorism and organised cross-border crimes.

Security agencies are urged to sustain the momentum against criminal networks operating within and across Nigeria’s borders, while also calling on relevant institutions to ensure the speedy prosecution of terrorism-related cases.

Residents in the state expressed hope that the judgment would serve as a deterrent to individuals involved in terrorism, arms trafficking and other threats to national security.

  • Middle Belt remains worst-hit by terrorism, banditry — MBF

Middle Belt remains worst-hit by terrorism, banditry — MBF

The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has observed with dismay that the region remains the most devastated by the activities of Boko Haram/ISWAP, bandits and other terrorist groups.

A statement issued by its spokesman, Luka Binniyat, and made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday said: “The Middle Belt remains the region most devastated by the activities of Boko Haram/ISWAP, bandits and other terrorist groups. States and areas that make up the Middle Belt—including Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kwara, Adamawa, Gombe, Kogi, Taraba, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Southern Kaduna, Southern Kebbi, Southern Bauchi, Southern Borno and Southern Yobe—have suffered enormous human and economic losses as a result of persistent violence by these extremist violent groups.”

He explained that the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has noted with strong support the recent call by the Emir of Argungu, Kebbi State, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, for his communities to become more organised in the face of the growing threat of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in his emirate.

According to him, “The MBF fully identifies with the concerns expressed by the Emir. We understand his frustration, fears and determination to protect his people from the insecurity that continues to devastate many communities across Hausaland and the Middle Belt.”

The statement added that if a respected traditional ruler from the Hausa heartland can openly encourage lawful community vigilance and collective security, then communities across the Middle Belt, which have carried the heaviest burden of terrorism and kidnapping, must also begin serious discussions on how to strengthen community safety and survival within the law.

The spokesman said that the Emir of Argungu’s intervention is therefore a welcome development, adding that the forum commended his courage, patriotism and concern for the security and welfare of his people.

It added that it is a wake-up call to all traditional rulers in the Middle Belt, irrespective of religion and ethnicity, to emulate his initiative. The forum also noted the growing number of indigenous Hausa voices calling for justice, self-determination, security and greater participation in shaping their political and economic future.

“The over 200 ethnic nationalities of the Middle Belt stand in solidarity with all Hausa people who believe in a peaceful, secure, democratic and prosperous Nigeria where every group enjoys equal rights and opportunities away from the domination of a minority.

“The time has come for greater cooperation between the peoples of Hausaland and the Middle Belt, who undeniably form the majority population of Northern Nigeria,” Binniyat explained.

The forum stated that together, they can work towards improving security, promoting economic development and building a stronger political partnership that reflects the aspirations of the majority of ordinary people in Hausaland and the Middle Belt. It pointed out that they must come together to discuss the issues that divide them, seek common ground and develop democratic solutions that will advance their collective interests and strengthen their unity.

He said: “We cannot afford to allow historical grievances, religious and ethnic divides to shackle us for the exploitation and domination of a more organised minority in both in the Middle Belt and Hausaland. The Middle Belt Forum is willing to champion this conversation.”

Police intensify security at Yobe NYSC orientation camp

The Yobe State Police Command has intensified security measures at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Dazigau, Nangere Local Government Area, following an on-the-spot assessment by the Commissioner of Police.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, said in a statement that CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin led the visit on Tuesday as part of the command’s renewed strategy to protect strategic institutions and public facilities.

Addressing corps members during the tour, CP Jibrin stressed the need for vigilance.

“You must be security conscious, watch for early warning signals, and promptly report any suspicious activity to camp authorities and security personnel,” he said.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Okochi Okpara, who received the commissioner and his entourage, described the collaboration between the police command and the NYSC as “indispensable” to ensuring the safety of corps members and staff.

He also commended security personnel deployed to the camp for their efforts in providing maximum security for the facility.

CP Jibrin inspected the camp surroundings and charged deployed officers to remain vigilant, professional and proactive in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I corps members later showcased parade drills, Taekwondo displays and other training skills, reflecting the discipline instilled in them during their orientation programme.

Lecturers may down tools as AAU-ASUU protests non-implementation of 2025 agreement with Nigerian govt

The Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on an industrial strike over the alleged failure of the Federal Government to implement the 2025 agreement reached with the union.

DAILY POST reports that the Chairman and Secretary of ASUU in the university, Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Dr. William, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The statement said that the union has commenced full mobilization of its members for a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike, noting that the action follows the persistent failure of the state government to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in the university.

The duo added that the decision to embark on the industrial action was taken at a congress held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

According to the statement, the union declared that its patience has been exhausted.

“For six months, we have waited for concrete steps toward implementation, yet none have materialized.

“It is with profound disappointment that we state that every effort to persuade the university authorities and the Edo State Government to honour the agreement has been met with trivialization and disregard.

“In a resolution adopted after the well-attended congress on the main campus in Ekpoma, the union resolved that effective from the July 2026 salary, payment must reflect the CATA component and all other allowances stipulated in the agreement. All accrued arrears since January 2026 must be paid in full.

“Any failure or derogation by the university authorities and the Edo State Government on this critical resolution will provoke and precipitate a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike,” it stated.

The union, which acknowledged the positive disposition of the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led Edo State Government toward the university, however, expressed deep concern about the continued non-implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement at AAU, Ekpoma.

They opined that the development is both saddening and provocative, particularly when all federal universities and no fewer than ten state universities have already implemented the agreement, including the payment of arrears.

While positing that the union remains committed to industrial peace, the ASUU leadership, however, insisted that the swift and full implementation of the agreement is the only path to lasting industrial harmony.

The body, therefore, called on the university authorities and the Edo State Government to act without further delay.
