UCL: Arsenal players chose Declan Rice as captain – Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has revealed that the squad voted for Declan Rice to wear the captain’s armband in the last games.

Arteta was speaking after the Gunners sealed their Champions League semi-final spot thanks to a goalless draw with Sporting on Wednesday.

In the absence of Martin Odegaard, Rice led the team out as they lost 2-1 to Bournemouth in the Premier League last weekend.

The England midfielder recovered from illness to skipper the side against Sporting, putting in a typically commanding performance.

Speaking after the game, Arteta said: “They made a decision because I think Declan has earned the role, the way he is taking ownership in difficult moments.”

Rice could continue in the role this weekend when Arsenal play Manchester City at the Etihad.

EPL: Don’t play like this against Man City – Thierry Henry warns Arsenal, Arteta

Former Arsenal captain, Thierry Henry, has demanded a better approach from the team when they play Manchester City in a top-of-the-table Premier League clash on Sunday.

Henry was speaking on CBS Sports following the Gunners’ 0-0 draw with Sporting at the Emirates.

The result was enough for Mikel Arteta’s men to qualify for the semi-finals for the second consecutive season.

Arsenal go into the City game sitting six points clear, although Pep Guardiola’s men have a game in hand.

When asked what their approach should be, Henry replied: “Not like tonight! Or against Bournemouth, Brighton away, Mansfield or anything I’ve seen this season.

“This is the biggest chance in your life to prove to yourself, as a team, that we can and then people will not talk.”

“I want to see that fire at the Etihad!”
