Gov Lawal urges NYSC members to embrace skills acquisition

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps deployed to the state to embrace skill acquisition and entrepreneurship during their service year.

The governor gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch A Stream II corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Gusau.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Nasiru Galadima Kaura, Lawal said corps members should make productive use of their service year by acquiring vocational skills and participating in entrepreneurship programmes.

He noted that such initiatives would help address youth restiveness and promote self-reliance among young Nigerians.

The governor also assured corps members of their safety, stating that his administration had put in place adequate security measures in collaboration with relevant agencies.

“We have put in place adequate measures, in collaboration with security agencies, to ensure that you are safe and well protected throughout your stay in Zamfara State,” he said.

Lawal further emphasised the importance of the NYSC scheme in fostering national unity, integration and development.

He urged the corps members to participate actively in all camp activities, particularly the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, programme, designed to equip them with practical skills.

“You must obey all camp rules and regulations, and uphold discipline, leadership, teamwork and patriotism, which the orientation course is meant to instill,” he added.

In his remarks, the Zamfara State NYSC Coordinator, Mallam Muhammad Lawan Ahmad, commended the governor for his continued support to the scheme and corps members in the state.

He noted that recent improvements in corps members’ allowances and logistics support at the orientation camp reflect the government’s commitment to their welfare.

According to a statement by Ibom Air’s Group Manager for Marketing and Communication, Aniekan Essienette, the initiative was carried out under the airline’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme, FAMPact (Fight Against Malaria in Pregnant Women and Children Today), in commemoration of the 2026 World Malaria Day.

Essienette noted that the intervention is the third consecutive year the airline has supported malaria control efforts, reflecting its commitment to healthcare as a key CSR focus.

She added that the donation aligns with this year’s World Malaria Day theme, “Driven to end malaria, Now we can, Now we must,” and is aimed at strengthening community-level prevention and treatment, particularly for high-risk groups.

2027: Oyo Defender kicks against ‘political scheming’, demands integrity in guber contest

A political pressure group, Oyo Defender, has expresses concern over what it described as emerging political maneuvers aimed at promoting a former commissioner in the administration of late governor Abiola Ajimobi as a contender in the 2027 Oyo State governorship election.

The group made its position known in a statement signed by its Secretary, Adedosu Ifaponle, on Saturday.

Oyo Defender noted that a critical moment when the people of Oyo State are demanding credible, transparent, and people-focused leadership, it is alarming that individuals facing serious public allegations of financial impropriety are being positioned for the highest office in the state.

According to the statement, reports in the public domain have linked the aspirant to an alleged ₦30 billion financial matter involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

“While we acknowledge the principle of presumption of innocence, such weighty allegations cannot be ignored or dismissed without clear and transparent resolution.

“Leadership, especially at the level of governor, requires not only competence but unquestionable integrity and public trust. The management of state resources is a sacred duty, and any aspirant seeking such responsibility must be beyond reproach in both record and reputation,” the statement added.

The Oyo Defender called on relevant anti-corruption agencies to ensure that all pending allegations are thoroughly investigated and openly addressed.

“The people of Oyo State deserve clarity, accountability, and assurance that those seeking to govern them meet the highest ethical standards.

“Furthermore, we call on political parties, civil society organizations, and the general public to reject any attempt to impose candidates whose credibility is under serious question. The 2027 election must not be reduced to a contest of political manipulation, but rather a defining moment for restoring integrity and trust in governance.

“Oyo State deserves leadership rooted in honesty, accountability, and genuine service to the people—not ambition clouded by controversy,” the statement said, stressing that the future of Oyo State must be built on integrity.

Nigerian Army recovers remains of soldier-couple murdered while traveling for traditional wedding

The Nigerian Army said troops from the 82 Division have dismantled a notorious camp associated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State.

In a statement shared on its official X handle, the Army said the troops acted on credible intelligence to carry out the operations on 24 April 2026 along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area.

The operation was part of a strategic clearance and search mission aimed at dismantling the IPOB/ESN hideout in the region and locating the remains of two Nigerian Army personnel, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were brutally abducted and murdered by terrorists in May 2022 while on their way to their traditional wedding.

Upon receiving credible intelligence, the army reported that its troops advanced towards a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout, where they encountered heavy fire from armed criminals.

The statement said the troops engaged the terrorists decisively, successfully repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the criminals to retreat in chaos.

“The encounter further revealed the desperation and criminal nature of the group, which continues to target innocent citizens and security personnel alike,” the statement said.

After successfully clearing the camp, the Nigerian Army said the troops conducted a comprehensive search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.

“The graves were carefully excavated, and the suspected remains were recovered,” the statement said.

The Nigerian Army confirmed that the recovered remains have been secured for detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to definitively establish their identities.

“Efforts are also ongoing to liaise with the families of the fallen personnel to ensure proper identification and facilitate befitting burial arrangements in honour of their sacrifice.

“This operation not only underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for fallen heroes but also highlights the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN criminal networks and infrastructure across the South East.

“The discovery of shallow graves within their camp further exposes the group’s heinous atrocities and disregard for human life.”

The Nigerian Army reassured the general public that ongoing operations will continue until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored across the region.

“We appreciate the law-abiding citizens for the information and urge you remain vigilant and continue to support security agencies with timely and credible information,” it added.

Imo: Army Recovers Remains Of Soldier Couple Slain Before Wedding

The Nigerian Army has recovered the remains of two soldiers, reportedly murdered by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.

In May 2022, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew were abducted and murdered while en route to their traditional marriage.

A statement by the Army on Saturday, revealed that the discovery followed a clearance and search operation in the surrounding areas along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government.

The Friday raid, the Army said, was not without challenges, because upon arriving at a suspected ESN hideout, its troops were attacked.

“Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted a thorough search of the area and made a grim but important discovery of shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain personnel.

“The graves were carefully excavated and suspected remains were recovered.

“The recovered remains have since been secured for detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to conclusively establish their identities,” the statement read partly.

The Army said, there are ongoing efforts to liaise with the families to provide proper identification and facilitate befitting burial arrangements in honour of their sacrifice.

The development, the Army noted, not only underscores the continued war against the IPOB/ESN operations in the region, but it also exposes the group’s heinous atrocities and disregard for human life.

“The Nigerian Army reassures the general public that ongoing operations will continue until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored across the region,” the Army stated.

Nigeria to get new National Resource Center for PWDs

A new national resource center is to be established in Nigeria for people with sensory impairment.

This comes as the country’s humanitarian affairs and disaster management head, Bernard Doro, former Kano governor Abdullahi Ganduje and other humanitarian stakeholders rally support for the center’s establishment.

The minister, while highlighting the significance of the initiative, said, “People living with disabilities cannot continue to be ignored in Nigeria.

“We must move towards a future where accessibility is by design, moving away from retrofitting tools towards building universal platforms; digital must be the priority here. Technology should empower individuals to navigate the world on their own terms.”

On her part, Fatima Ganduje Abiola-Ajumobi, founder of Let’s Talk Humanity and pioneer of the center, said she is committed to making an impact on the lives of PWDs.

“A national resource center for those with sensory impairment to be able to tap into the international knowledge and the international resources that are available in the parts of the world that are much more developed than us when it comes to special needs,” she stated.

Earlier, Ganduje had called on Northern governors and the Nigerian government to invest in PWDs to halt the begging menace.

Severe flooding leaves trail of destruction in Taraba’s Jalingo

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread destruction in parts of Jalingo, the Taraba state capital, with the Mile Six axis identified as one of the worst affected areas following a prolonged downpour in the early hours of Saturday.

DAILY POST reports that the rain, which began around 3:00 a.m, lasted for several hours, triggering severe flooding across multiple neighborhoods in the city.

Recounting their ordeals, residents reported that the intensity and duration of the rainfall led to rising water levels that inundated homes and displaced property.

Particularly affected was the area surrounding Excellence International School, where floodwaters reportedly swept through residential compounds, leaving behind debris and extensive damage.

Residents who spoke to DAILY POST, described the situation as alarming, noting that water levels rose rapidly, giving residents little time to salvage their belongings.

Many residents expressed frustration over what they described as a persistent problem caused by poor drainage infrastructure. According to them, flooding in the area has become a recurring issue, even during less intense rainfall.

“We are tired of this happening every year,” a resident who identified himself Nasiru Illiya lamented after his home was partially submerged.

“The drainage systems here are either blocked or completely insufficient. Each time it rains heavily, we are at risk,” he said.

Preliminary reports indicate that several households suffered losses, including damaged personal belongings, washed out pathways, and, in some cases, structural damage to buildings.

Community members have also raised health concerns, warning that stagnant floodwaters could increase the risk of waterborne diseases if urgent measures are not taken to address the situation.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for immediate intervention by relevant authorities. Residents are urging both local and state governments to improve drainage systems and implement sustainable flood control strategies to reduce the impact of seasonal rains.

With the rainy season gaining momentum, there are growing fears that similar incidents may occur in other parts of the city if proactive steps are not taken to safeguard lives and property.

  • CSO seeks review of civil matter turned to criminal case by AGF

CSO seeks review of civil matter turned to criminal case by AGF

The Africa Center for Good Governance and Corruption Free Communities, a civic organization, has expressed concern that a civil matter against a human rights lawyer, Barrister Victor Giwa, and two others, has been turned into a criminal case by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The civic group raised the concern while asking the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the Director of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, to review the case.

In a statement by the Convener, Temitope Olubunmi Joseph, the CSO explained that the case began as a civil matter but was turned into a criminal matter by the former AGF, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Calling for a thorough review of the matter to unravel the truth, the civic group expressed concern that the charge could be a witch hunt.

“This is supposed to be a civil matter; the question we should ask is, at what point did it turn into a criminal matter? We know the Honorable AGF Fagbemi and the DPP, Oyedepo, are yet to turn their minds to looking at the matter critically.

“We are using this medium to call on them to revisit this matter and call for a fresh investigation.

“The last administration in the ministry led by Malami used his office to intimidate and harass Giwa and his client, Cecil Osakwe, over a property owned y Osakwe, located at No. 1, Me Long Close, Maitama, Abuja.

“We plead with the AGF to once again look into the matter and order a fresh investigation, so as not to punish an innocent person,” the civil society organization said.

DAILY POST reports that a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court presided by Justice Samira Bature had issued an arrest warrant against Giwa and a police official, Edith Erhunmuuse. They were to be arraigned with another defendant, Cecil Osakwe, on a nine-count charge marked FCT/HC/CR/222/2023, brought against them by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The charge accused the defendants of engaging in criminal conduct over alleged forceful eviction of occupants and property damage estimated at N300 million.

However, the civil society organization observed that the said eviction over which the defendants were charged was ordered by a court.

“Without the order of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, the eviction could not have been carried out,” the civic group said, while faulting the criminal prosecution.
