NMA threatens N1bn suit against EFCC over alleged assault on UUTH professor

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Akwa Ibom State Council, has concluded plans to initiate a one billion naira suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over the alleged assault of its member, Professor Eyo Ekpe, a Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, UUTH.

This was among the 10 resolutions reached by the body at the end of its emergency virtual meeting on Tuesday in respect of the arrest and alleged assault of Professor Ekpe by the commission.

Recall that EFCC operatives, on the grounds of authenticating a medical report presented by a suspect, were said to have invaded the hospital and subsequently arrested Prof. Ekpe under demeaning circumstances.

It was gathered that when the professor was accosted by the official, he told him that the office was already processing the request. However, the official allegedly went outside, mobilised other colleagues, and returned to hound the professor away after allegedly beating him and making him cry in public.

At a press conference held at Doctors’ Mess, Udoudoma, Uyo, on Wednesday, the NMA Chairman, Prof. Aniekan Peter, who also suffered during the crisis, said it was a slap on the integrity of the NMA as a body to allow anyone assault their member, not to talk of a professor who was only carrying out his lawful duties of saving lives and imparting knowledge.

Reading a communiqué endorsed by the chairman and the secretary, Dr Ighorodje Edesiri, respectively, the assistant secretary of the union expressed dismay that there has been a recurring pattern of harassment and assault of medical professionals and members of the association by security agencies within the state, adding that the union would no longer condone such acts.

The union, while observing that there was no formal invitation extended to Prof. Ekpe or the leadership of the NMA before the incident, described the act as barbaric, degrading, inhuman, and a gross violation of the sanctity of the hospital environment, thereby putting staff and patients at risk and undermining the dignity of the medical profession.

The union, which has since embarked on an indefinite strike, said members would not return to work unless the EFCC tenders an apology to the assaulted professor, chairman, and members of the NMA, and identifies and prosecutes the officials who carried out the operation.

The union further stated that it has resolved not to offer any medical services to EFCC officials or their relatives, as they have chosen the path of cruelty against their member.

The communiqué read in part: “We observed that Prof. Eyo Ekpe was apprehended within the premises of UUTH by masked EFCC operatives who physically assaulted him, beat him to the point of bleeding, and handcuffed him alongside other doctors and hospital staff who attempted to intervene.

“Prof. Peter, Akwa Ibom NMA chairman, was shoved and exposed to teargas when he approached the scene seeking clarification from the operatives. Hospitals are sacred environments meant for the preservation of life and should not be subjected to violent invasions by security agencies.

“We shall institute legal action against the EFCC with a demand for damages in the sum of one billion naira (N1,000,000,000) for the physical, emotional, professional, and institutional damages caused. Congress further emphasised that this action shall serve as a deterrent against future harassment, intimidation, or assault of medical practitioners by any security agency. The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity, and safety of all its members.”

According to him, “Her philanthropic efforts reflect a moral commitment to giving,” adding that her investments in the university stand as lasting legacies. “If Apostle Alakija had been thinking the way many of us think, she would not have contributed a dime to UNIOSUN’s development.

“Let ambition be guided by purpose, let resilience transform adversity into growth, and let integrity anchor achievement.”

Governor Ademola Adeleke thanked Apostle Alakija for her service and announced the appointment of a new Chancellor, Mrs Victoria Adunola Samson.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, described Apostle Alakija as a blessing to the university and a diligent, down-to-earth woman whose tenure brought significant development to the institution.

Providing an overview of her achievements, Adebooye disclosed that the number of Bachelor of Science programmes increased from 39 to 66 during her tenure and later rose to 138 under his administration.

“The student population grew from about 10,000 to 14,290 during the tenure of a former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola, and has now reached 42,980. Apostle Alakija contributed N250 million of her personal funds towards the N350 million dual carriageway project within the university,” he said.

In her remarks, Apostle Folorunso Alakija expressed gratitude to the university community for their support throughout her tenure.

She attributed her accomplishments to divine grace, saying, “I thank God that I said yes at the beginning and for all those who supported me on this journey, including my husband and children.”

    Fubara Reaffirms Loyalty To APC

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his commitment to the All Progressives Congress, declaring that he remains a loyal member of the party despite speculations circulating on social media.

Governor Fubara made the clarification on Wednesday shortly after inspecting the reconstructed Rivers State Psychiatric Hospital, which has now been remodelled into a general hospital in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The governor dismissed reports and interpretations suggesting that he had distanced himself from the APC, describing such claims as false and misleading.

“I’m a member of the All Progressives Congress and nothing has changed. People should stop using whatever situation they pick up from social media or their personal interpretation to present me wrongly. I have not gone anywhere. I remain a member of the APC,” Fubara stated.

His remarks come amid growing political discussions and speculation over alignments within Rivers State politics, with several interpretations emerging online regarding the governor’s relationship with the ruling party.

Speaking further during the inspection tour, Governor Fubara explained that the decision to convert the psychiatric hospital into a full-fledged general hospital was informed by the healthcare needs of residents in the area.

According to him, the administration discovered during an earlier visit that communities around Rumuigbo lacked adequate access to healthcare facilities, leaving many residents dependent on the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital for medical services.

He noted that the teaching hospital was too far for many residents and that his administration considered it necessary to establish a closer and more accessible healthcare centre for people living in Rumuigbo and neighbouring communities.

The governor expressed satisfaction with the completion of the project, describing it as one of the promises fulfilled by his administration.

Fubara said the project reflects his government’s commitment to implementing people-oriented programmes and prioritising projects that directly improve thewell-beingg of Rivers residents.

He added that improving access to quality healthcare remains one of the key objectives of his administration, assuring that more developmental projects would continue across the state.

  • 59 Feeders Downgraded In Enugu Over Poor Power Supply

59 Feeders Downgraded In Enugu Over Poor Power Supply

Fifty-nine feeders under the franchise of the MainPower Electricity Distribution Company Limited have been downgraded, Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission announced on Wednesday.

THE WHISTLER reports that MainPower is a subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, which services customers in Enugu State.

EERC, in a statement, said that the downgrading was sequel to MainPower’s failure to meet the threshold of minimum hours of power availability, especially for Band A customers, despite charging them Band A tariff.

Recall that the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, in November 1, 2020 categorized electricity users into Bands.

The Commission said the downgrade would remain in place until power supply improved on such feeders. It explained that the decision arose following persistent complaints from electricity consumers in Enugu State, particularly Band A customers.

Their complaints were regarding the drastically reduced hours of supply, EERC said, adding that it conducted a technical and safety audit of major injection substations operated by MainPower.

Quoting the statement, “The findings from the Commission’s field inspection and the online monitoring platform corroborated customers’ complaints that MainPower had failed to deliver the expected hours of supply as required under the Service-Based Tariff (SBT) regime.”

It said the SBT framework was introduced to ensure that customers pay for electricity commensurate with the quality and hours of availability of the supply received.

The statement directed MainPower to downgrade all fifty-nine affected feeders, as listed in the Commission’s directive, to their appropriate service bands immediately.

EERC, however, said upon requests by MainPower, it might approve the upgrade of any of the downgraded feeders “once it is verified that the feeder met the threshold of minimum hours of availability in the preceding month in line with the SBT framework”.

Some of the feeders downloaded include 9th Mile Industrial 11KV, downgraded from Band A to Band C; Abakaliki Road 11KV, downgraded from Band A to Band C; Abakpa 1 11KV, downgraded from Band A to Band C; Abakpa 2 11KV, downgraded from Band A to Band C; Abakpa 3 11KV, downgraded from Band B to Band C; Amorji 11KV, downgraded from Band B to Band D; Nsukka Township, from Band B to D; Presidential, from A to C; UNEC from A to D; University of Nigeria Nsukka from A to D and Government House from A to E.

Other affected areas are Emene, Topland, Ugwuoye, Chime Avenue, Achi, Amechi, Ibagwa, Ugwuogo, Ugwuaji, Okwe, NOWAS, Coca Cola, Coal Camp and Dhamija.

  • Tinubu Arrives Kigali For Africa CEO Forum After Kenya Summit

Tinubu Arrives Kigali For Africa CEO Forum After Kenya Summit

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, ahead of the 13th edition of the Africa CEO Forum scheduled to begin on Thursday.

Tinubu was received at the Presidential Wing of the Kigali International Airport by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda.

Others at the airport included the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed; Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Rwanda, Ibrahim Zanna; and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.

Founded in 2012 by Jeune Afrique Media and co-hosted by the International Finance Corporation, the forum is regarded as one of Africa’s largest annual gatherings of private sector leaders, investors and policymakers.

This year’s theme is “The Scale Imperative: Why Africa Must Embrace Shared Ownership.”

According to the presidency, Tinubu will speak on “Holding the Line: Nigeria’s Reform Bet in a Fractured World,” where he is expected to defend his administration’s economic reforms and outline Nigeria’s investment prospects.

The president is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with African and global business leaders during the summit.

Tinubu’s participation at the forum comes after he addressed the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

At the summit, he criticised punitive global lending conditions facing African countries.

Speaking at the summit co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto, Tinubu said Africa’s industrial growth was being weakened by high borrowing costs and an unfair global financial system.

He argued that African countries remained trapped exporting raw materials while importing finished products because industries lacked access to affordable capital.

Tinubu defended his administration’s reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate unification and banking sector recapitalisation, saying the measures were “sovereign choices” aimed at stabilising Nigeria’s economy.

The president also disclosed that Nigeria would spend about $11.6bn on debt servicing in 2026. He warned that high interest payments were depriving critical sectors of investment.

His remarks came weeks after former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, faulted the government’s borrowing strategy and described debt for consumption as dangerous to the economy.

According to the Debt Management Office, Nigeria’s public debt rose to N159.27tn at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, up from N97.34tn recorded in late 2023.
