Former Inspector-General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, has withdrawn from the Yobe state governorship race under the All Progressives Congress, (APC)

Alkali announced his withdrawal that ended his governorship aspiration in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday.

“After due consultations and exhaustive meetings with the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, the Executive Governors of Yobe and Borno state, elders and political associates, as well as some very critical stakeholders across the seventeen Local Government Areas, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration to the governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections,” he said.

According to him, the decision was a voluntary one for the interest of party unity, stability and progress of the  state.

“Having made this decision, we have to but urge our teaming supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and continue to support our great party, the APC, as well as the eventual gubernatorial candidate”, he added.

The retired police boss was among six APC governorship aspirants who had earlier rejected the emergence of Baba Malam Wali as consensus candidate and insisted on the conduct of direct primaries in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and APC guidelines.

The aspirants included Senator Ibrahim Bomai, Mustapha Maihaja, Bashir Machina, former IGP Usman Baba Alkali, Kashim Musa Tumsah and Lawan Kolo Geidam.

As it is, ex- IGP Usman Baba Alkali and former FCT Mandate Secretary on Agriculture and Rural Development, Lawan Kolo have so far withdrew from the guber race thereby depleting the number of aspirants from six to four.

Meanwhile, both Usman Baba Alkali and Lawan Kolo have refused to endorse the preferred governorship candidate of APC, Alh Baba Mallam Wali.

NMA Threatens N1bn Suit Against EFCC Over Alleged Hospital Assault

The Nigerian Medical Association has threatened a N1bn lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the alleged brutal assault of a senior doctor during a controversial raid at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

Addressing journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, the association accused EFCC operatives of invading the hospital premises on Tuesday, assaulting renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, Professor Eyo Ekpe, and disrupting activities while investigating a fraud case linked to a suspect receiving treatment at the facility.

The anti-graft agency had earlier said its operatives visited the hospital to verify a medical report submitted by the suspect and later approached the Chief Medical Director after allegedly meeting resistance during initial enquiries.

“The commission, however, maintained that its officers withdrew peacefully without disrupting hospital operations.”

But the NMA painted a different picture.

Akwa Ibom NMA Chairman, Professor Aniekan Peter, said masked EFCC operatives apprehended Professor Ekpe within the hospital premises, allegedly beating him “to the point of bleeding” before handcuffing him alongside other doctors and staff who attempted to intervene.

Peter further alleged that he was shoved and exposed to teargas while seeking clarification from the operatives during the incident.

He described the operation as “barbaric, degrading and inhuman,” the association said the raid violated the sanctity of the hospital environment and amounted to physical, emotional, professional and institutional abuse.

Reading a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting of the association, Assistant Secretary Dr Unyime Ndoh said the NMA had resolved to drag the EFCC to court, demanding N1bn in damages over the incident.

The communiqué, endorsed by Professor Peter and Secretary Dr Ighorodje Edesiri, also announced an indefinite withdrawal of services until the association’s demands are met, including a public apology to the affected doctors and prosecution of officers involved in the operation.

The association further declared that its members would suspend medical services to EFCC personnel and their relatives pending the resolution of the dispute.

Tinubu, Kagame Reopen Talks On Trade, Tourism, Visa-Free Entry

President Bola Tinubu and President Paul Kagame have agreed to deepen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Rwanda.

Tinubu arrived in Kigali on Wednesday ahead of the 13th edition of the Africa CEO Forum scheduled to begin today.

He was received at the Presidential Wing of the Kigali International Airport by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Juvenal Marizamunda.

Tinubu met with Kagame at the Urugwiro Presidential Villa on arrival in the country.

“Both leaders emphasised the importance of reviving the Joint Permanent Ministerial Commission (JPMC), originally signed by both countries in 2021, as a vital platform for advancing their shared objectives. They further agreed that Nigeria should host the next meeting of the Commission.

“In reviewing consular matters, President Tinubu stated that Nigeria will seriously consider reciprocating Rwanda’s 30-day visa-free status for Nigerians in the spirit of Pan-Africanism.

“The two presidents also discussed the activation of pending Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) in areas of tourism, Illicit Drugs, and anti-corruption—underscoring President Tinubu’s commitment to inter-African integration, mutual respect, and shared prosperity,” Nigeria’s presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement.

  • APC primaries:  Gov Yahaya warns politicians against violence in Gombe

APC primaries:  Gov Yahaya warns politicians against violence in Gombe

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has said he will not tolerate any act capable of threatening peace in the state ahead of the forthcoming primary elections, warning politicians and their supporters against violence.

In a statewide broadcast on Wednesday, the governor stated that the decision followed disagreements among some aspirants despite efforts by the APC Elders’ Committee and the party’s State Executive Committee to build consensus around endorsed candidates.

The governor explained that some weeks ago, with the support of the APC Elders’ Committee and the State Executive Committee, members of the APC made spirited attempt to explore the consensus option.

Former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, has rejected the consensus arrangement which favoured Dr Jamilu Isiyaku Gwamna and the Senator representing Gombe Central District, Muhammadu Danjuma Goje, and protested the arrangement that ousted him after serving for 16 years.

Governor Yahaya said, “The party will now proceed with direct primaries in accordance with Section 87(2) of the Electoral Act.”

The governor, who said he would enter the final year of his administration on 29 May, said that preserving peace and stability in the State remains his top priority as political activities intensify.

Yahaya said the conduct of party primaries was critical because of its implications for democracy, social cohesion and internal stability in the state, warning that security agencies will not tolerate attempts by politicians or their supporters to exploit the primaries to cause trouble.

He stated that there are unpatriotic politicians and conflict entrepreneurs who seek to hide behind the upcoming primary elections to stoke chaos and conflict.

The governor further warned that anyone found culpable in disrupting public peace before, during or after the primaries will face the full weight of the law, assuring that anybody found wanting will not go unpunished.

The governor called on political stakeholders to put the interest of the State above personal ambitions, reminding residents that Gombe has remained relatively peaceful since its creation in 1996, despite security challenges confronting parts of the North-East.

The Customs chief described the incident as deeply painful, noting that operatives of the service have continued to play frontline roles in security operations alongside the military.

“This morning, two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service paid the supreme sacrifice while warding off threats from Lakurawa terrorists in Kebbi.

“Apart from the military, the Nigeria Customs Service remains the last shield in several of these border communities,” Adeniyi said.

He assured that the deaths of the officers would not weaken the resolve of the service in confronting criminal networks operating around Nigeria’s borders.
