Police Arrest 10 Bandits, Recover Firearms In Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested 10 suspected bandits and recovered several firearms during coordinated operations targeting criminal networks and illegal arms trafficking across the state.

The arrests were made during intelligence-led raids carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and other tactical teams in different parts of Kaduna.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said investigations into a case of criminal conspiracy and illegal arms dealing led to the arrest of five suspects after the matter was transferred from the Ikara Divisional Headquarters on May 1, 2026.

The suspects were identified as Haruna Dauda, Meshack John, Iliya Dangi, Joshua Maigida and Audu Musa.

According to the police, operatives recovered four fabricated AK-47 rifles and two locally made pistols from the suspects during the operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the group allegedly specialised in supplying arms and ammunition to bandits operating within Ikara Local Government Area and surrounding communities.

The police said the suspects also confessed to providing weapons to other individuals earlier arrested in connection with criminal activities in the area.

The command added that efforts were ongoing to dismantle the wider arms trafficking network and apprehend other fleeing members.

In another operation carried out on May 5, police operatives arrested two suspects, Yunusa Yahaya, 40, and Mustapha Yahaya, 30, in Kubau Local Government Area following credible intelligence.

The suspects were allegedly found in possession of a locally fabricated AK-47 rifle and 7.5mm ammunition.

Police also recovered another fabricated AK-47 rifle during a raid on the residence of one Mathew Tanko in Furana Village, Ikara LGA. The suspect reportedly escaped before the arrival of security operatives and is currently being tracked.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, warned individuals involved in the illegal production, possession and supply of firearms to criminal groups to desist or face the full weight of the law.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining operations against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across Kaduna State.

  • 2027: Ex-APC guber aspirant, Byuan picks nomination forms in Labour Party, endorses Tinubu for president

2027: Ex-APC guber aspirant, Byuan picks nomination forms in Labour Party, endorses Tinubu for president

Former Executive Director of Housing, Finance and Accounts at the Federal Housing Authority, Abuja, Mathias Byuan, has officially obtained the Labour Party’s expression of interest and nomination forms to contest the 2027 Benue State governorship election.

Despite joining the Labour Party, Byuan reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The governorship hopeful visited the Labour Party national secretariat on Friday alongside several other aspirants seeking tickets for the Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions across Benue State’s three senatorial districts.

Addressing journalists after picking up the forms, Byuan stated that although he would be contesting the governorship election under the Labour Party, he still believed in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and would continue to support his administration.

According to him, the President has recorded notable achievements through ongoing developmental projects across the country, including some within Benue State, and should be given another opportunity to complete them.

He appealed to his supporters to vote for President Tinubu for the presidency, while supporting him and other Labour Party candidates in Benue during the 2027 elections.

Byuan explained that his decision to run on the Labour Party platform was motivated by his desire to rescue Benue State from insecurity and what he described as poor governance under the current administration.

He accused the state government of failing to meet critical obligations, including the payment of workers’ salaries, which he said had contributed to industrial actions by health and local government workers in the state.

The former APC governorship aspirant pledged that if elected governor, his administration would prioritize security and the welfare of citizens, while also focusing on sectors such as healthcare, education, housing, road infrastructure, and rural development.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser, Akange Nyagba, said party stakeholders and supporters at the Labour Party secretariat expressed confidence in Byuan’s ambition and assured him of their support.

Byuan had earlier sought the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, before later defecting to the Labour Party.

EPL: They are 95% to clinch it – Jay Bothroyd predicts title winners

Former England forward, Jay Bothroyd, has tipped Arsenal to win the Premier League title.

The Gunners are two points clear of Manchester City with two fixtures left.

Bothroyd, speaking on Sky Sports, expects Mikel Arteta’s men to complete the job.

He however does not believe Arsenal will do the double, when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.

“Premier League, yes. My percentage right now is 95%,” Bothroyd said.

“But the Champions League will be a tough one. If Arsenal play at their best, they will win the game.

“However, it is hard to look at PSG’s team as a whole, who got a clean sheet against Bayern Munich in the last game.

“When you look at Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Doue, the way they press, they can make you scared. Apart from the workrate, they also have the quality.

“That is why it’s hard for me to say Arsenal will win the Champions League.”

Nigerians in limbo as NDIC, Wema Bank fight over Banana Island properties

The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, and Nigerian commercial bank, Wema Bank, have been enmeshed in a fresh controversy, leaving Nigerians in limbo.

The nation’s financial institution insurer filed two fresh suits, marked FHC/L/CP/466/26, on Thursday at the Federal High Court in Lagos against Wema Bank, seeking the recovery of disputed Banana Island properties valued at about N125.38 billion and an alleged unauthorised payment of N401 million.

Accordingly, the suits were filed under the Failed Banks (Recovery of Debts) and Financial Malpractices in Banks Act.

NDIC said its action forms part of efforts to recover assets linked to the defunct bank whose licence was revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in January.

NDIC blamed Wema Bank, stating that the assets, which comprise 12 high-value properties in Banana Island, Lagos, were acquired through companies linked to Gulf Bank before its collapse.

The case has placed Wema Bank in a difficult situation, with the possibility of impacting customers’ trust and deposits.

Reacting in a statement on Friday, Wema Bank clarified that the properties in question were taken over due to delinquent indebtedness of N1.2 billion under the defunct management of Gulf Bank.

The bank also stated that the companies involved are not the same as Gulf Bank, contrary to NDIC’s claims.

“We unequivocally reject these claims, which are inaccurate, malicious, and clearly intended to distort the true position,” Wema Bank stated.

However, the bank did not deny links to the properties and the defunct Gulf Bank.

The situation has sent mixed signals to bank customers in Nigeria.

Uju Ogunbunka, President of the Bank Customers’ Association of Nigeria, said he could not ascertain the impact of the controversy on its members as of the time of filing this report.

APC Clears Wike Loyalists For Reps Race, Screens Out Fubara Allies

The screening process for aspirants seeking the All Progressives Congress (APC) tickets for House of Representatives seats in Rivers State has deepened political tensions within the party, following the clearance of several loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while aspirants believed to be aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara were reportedly disqualified.

The list released by the APC screening committee for the South-South House of Representatives aspirants showed that prominent figures associated with the party’s mainstream structure in Rivers were cleared to contest across various federal constituencies.

Among those cleared is the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Chike Amaewhule, who was screened and cleared for the Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency seat.

Others cleared include Felix Uche Nwaeke for Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency; Hart Cyril Godwin and Philmoore Tombodiea Tony for Bonny/Degema; Dumnamene Dekor and Israel Lebura Ngbuelo for Gokana/Khana; Blessing Chisery Amadi and Igwe Precious for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency.

Also cleared were Victor Chukwuemele Obuzor and Solomon Bob for Egbeda/Ndoni/Ahoada West/Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Federal Constituency; Onyeozu Joy Nyebuchi and Adiele Lawrence Ogbor for Ikwerre/Emohua; Linda Somiari Steward and Tekena Thankgod Ikiaki for Okrika/Ogu/Bolo; Frederick Apiafi for Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro; Tom Epikaw Peter for Ikot Abasi/Eket Federal Constituency, as well as Ozuzum Chibuzor Nwamaka for Etche/Omuma.

However, the screening outcome appeared to favour aspirants linked to the camp loyal to Wike, as several politicians reportedly aligned with Governor Fubara were not cleared by the panel.
Those listed as “not cleared” include retired Air Commodore John Azubuike Opara for Port Harcourt Federal Constituency; Anderson Allison Igbiki for Okrika/Ogu/Bolo; Awaji Imombek D. Abirite for Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro; and former federal lawmaker, Boma Goodhead, for Asari-Toru/Akuku-Toru Federal Constituency.

The development is expected to further heighten the political rivalry between the camps of Wike and Fubara ahead of the 2026 general elections in Rivers State.

Political observers say the screening exercise may shape the internal power dynamics within the APC in Rivers, especially as both factions continue to struggle for influence within the party structure.

The APC in Rivers State has yet to officially explain the reasons behind the disqualification of the affected aspirants, though party sources hinted that issues relating to documentation and screening requirements may have influenced the outcome.

  • Akanbi’s lawyers slam Falana over murder claims, allege bias, media manipulation

Akanbi’s lawyers slam Falana over murder claims, allege bias, media manipulation

Legal representatives of Hammed Tajudeen Akanbi have strongly criticised Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, over his public call for their client’s prosecution on allegations bordering on murder, attempted murder, and destruction of property.

In a rebuttal issued following reports published in several national newspapers on May 10, 2026, Akanbi’s counsel, Mr. Adedotun Ajulo, Esq., described Falana’s intervention as hasty, irresponsible, and lacking legal foundation.

According to Ajulo, Falana’s comments amounted to an attempt to sway public perception and interfere with ongoing investigations through media pressure.

“With due respect, the intervention by the Learned Silk is premature, reckless, and legally indefensible. It falls short of the standard expected from a senior member of the Bar,” the statement said.

The legal team maintained that under Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution, Akanbi remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court, noting that investigations into the matter only commenced on April 16, 2026.

Ajulo argued that demanding prosecution before the conclusion of investigations undermines due process and the principles of fair hearing.

He questioned the basis upon which Falana made the allegations, asking whether there was any credible evidence linking Akanbi to the crimes or if the public statements were merely aimed at generating sympathy and public outrage.

The lawyers further claimed there was evidence showing that Akanbi was not in Nigeria on April 18, 2023, and August 26, 2024, the dates when Sheriff Ishola Salami and Prince Akinloye were allegedly killed.

According to the statement, none of the suspects currently standing trial in connection with the killings had implicated Akanbi in their confessional statements or testimonies.

“There is no direct or circumstantial evidence connecting our client with any of the persons facing prosecution in the matter,” the lawyers stated.

Ajulo also dismissed claims that Akanbi had previously been convicted for land grabbing or destruction of property, insisting that no court in Nigeria had ever found him guilty of such offences.

The statement additionally accused former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, of mishandling the case and abusing legal procedures. The lawyers alleged that Akanbi was declared wanted on February 19, 2026, without prior invitation or a valid court order.

They further claimed that shortly after the declaration, some individuals invaded and vandalised Akanbi’s property in the Ajiran community, while police authorities allegedly ignored petitions supported by photographic and video evidence.

Ajulo disclosed that a petition submitted to the then Inspector-General of Police on February 23, 2026, led to the withdrawal of the case file from Moshood and its transfer to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos, for fresh investigation.

He also stated that a court had earlier nullified an arrest and remand order obtained against Akanbi, while another court reportedly rejected a similar application and instead ordered that the businessman be properly invited rather than arrested arbitrarily.

According to Ajulo, it was based on those court rulings and the reassignment of the investigation that Akanbi returned to Nigeria to cooperate with authorities.

The lawyers, however, described his eventual arrest in Cotonou, Benin Republic, as questionable and contrary to existing court directives.

They also rejected suggestions that Akanbi was a fugitive, arguing that his movements and conduct in Benin Republic did not reflect that of someone evading justice.

“If our client was truly on the run, he would not have moved openly in a foreign country using a Nigerian-registered SUV customised with his name,” the statement added.

The legal team further condemned the public display of Akanbi in handcuffs and leg chains on April 20, 2026, describing it as a calculated media show intended to humiliate him and prejudice public opinion.

Ajulo alleged that another petition later prompted the police authorities to once again remove the case file from Moshood and reassign it within the force hierarchy.

He accused Falana of overlooking major inconsistencies and procedural irregularities while lending support to what he described as a compromised process.

“One would expect a lawyer of his standing to critically examine these contradictions rather than amplify them against a citizen who has not been convicted,” he stated.

The lawyers further suggested that Falana’s public posture raised concerns about possible undisclosed interests influencing his position.

According to the statement, Akanbi would not be subjected to public persecution or sacrificed for media sensationalism, warning that legal action could be taken against individuals spreading false narratives capable of undermining his constitutional rights.

“The criminal justice system must not be turned into a media-driven spectacle controlled by influential voices. Justice must always be guided by evidence, due process, and constitutional safeguards,” the statement concluded.
