U.S. Military Not Involved In Ground Operations Of Assassination Of ISIS Leader..Nigeria Army

Nigeria’s military yesterday clarified that no American troops participated on the ground in the operation that killed Abu Bilal Al-Minuki, described as the global second-in-command of the Islamic State (ISIS), even as retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman hailed the mission as one of the most consequential counter-terrorism successes in Nigeria’s history and called for intensified operations against remaining insurgents.

The military said the operation, conducted around Metele in Borno State near the Lake Chad Basin, was carried out under Operation Hadin Kai in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), with the United States providing intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and other operational support.

In televised remarks monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja said the operation followed months of intelligence gathering and close coordination between Nigerian and U.S. authorities.

He explained that earlier reports suggesting Al-Minuki had been killed in 2024 were based on mistaken identity because the militant operated under multiple aliases to evade detection.

United States President Donald Trump had announced on May 16 that “American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria” carried out what he described as a “meticulously planned” mission to eliminate Al-Minuki, whom he called “the most active terrorist in the world.”

International media reports indicated that the operation took place around Metele in northeastern Borno State, an area regarded as a major stronghold of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

U.S. authorities designated Al-Minuki as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in 2023, linking him to ISIS logistics, explosives, financing, propaganda and coordination networks across West Africa and the Sahel.

Reacting to the development, Usman, a former Director of Army Public Relations, said the elimination of Al-Minuki and several other terrorists represented a major achievement in the country’s counter-insurgency campaign.

He described the mission as an “extraordinary milestone” in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin, warning, however, that the killing of Al-Minuki should not lead to complacency because terrorist groups often regenerate leadership structures after setbacks.

He said the precision air-land operation deserved national recognition beyond newspaper headlines.

“What makes this operation particularly significant is not merely the elimination of a high-profile terrorist leader, but the symbolism and strategic consequences attached to it.”

If indeed Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki occupied the exalted but ignoble operational position attributed to him within the ISIS global network, then his elimination sends a clear message to terrorist organisations everywhere: there will be no sanctuary for those who orchestrate violence against innocent populations and sovereign nations,” he said.

Usman stressed that terrorism remained a global threat to peace, economic stability and human security, adding that the latest success should be viewed as an opportunity to intensify military gains rather than a sign that the war had ended.

“History teaches us that terrorist groups are adaptive, opportunistic and often quick to regenerate leadership structures after suffering battlefield setbacks. Therefore, the elimination of a major commander and a handful of his loyalists, however significant, must be viewed as a strategic opportunity to intensify and consolidate gains rather than a signal of mission accomplished,” he said.

Meanwhile, U.S. Congressman Riley Moore urged President Trump to sustain efforts against terrorists responsible for attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

Moore, reacting on social media to the operation, commended Trump for taking decisive action against Al-Minuki, whom he accused of involvement in violence and killings targeting Christians.

“Eliminating ISIS’ leadership sends a clear message: those who target innocent Christians will be hunted down and brought to justice,” Moore said.

He, however, argued that the operation should not be the final step, describing attacks on Christians in Nigeria’s Middle Belt as one of the world’s worst humanitarian and religious persecution crises.

Ballon d’Or: ‘He’s spectacular’ – Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak names player that should’ve won award

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, has revealed that teammate, Antoine Griezmann should have won a Ballon d’Or in his career.

Oblak described the France international, who will leave Atletico Madrid in the summer for Orlando City, as a spectacular footballer.

The Slovenia shot-stopper spoke to reporters after Atletico Madrid defeated Girona 1-0 in the LaLiga on Sunday.

The match against Girona was Griezmann’s final home match for Atletico as he will depart Diego Simeone’s side for Orlando City in the summer.

“To enjoy his [Griezmann’s] football and his magic. He’s spectacular and should have won a Ballon d’Or,” Oblak said.

“I’m happy with his career. He still has years left in the USA, where they’ll enjoy watching him play.”

Griezmann came close to winning a Ballon d’Or in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

The Frenchman finished third in the Ballon d’Or voting, behind Cristiano Ronaldo in 2016 and Luka Modric in 2018.

Nigerian Navy dismantles reconstructed illegal refinery

The Nigerian Navy has dismantled an illegally reconstructed refining cluster, along the Rivers–Bayelsa border, recovering about 8,500 litres of suspected petroleum products.

The Director of Naval Information, Navy Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Folorunsho said that the operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH under Operation DELTA SENTINEL.

“This crackdown followed a credible intelligence on illegal refining around Egboama/Ogbogolo community in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State,” he said.

He said that the operation involved coordinated land and water insertion, supported by aerial surveillance to locate the concealed refining sites, within the creek.

“The troops uncovered approximately 5,500 litres of suspected crude oil and 3,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, AGO,” he said.

Folorunsho added that generators, welding machines and other tools used in expanding the illegal facilities were also recovered during the operation.

“Findings depicted deliberate efforts by the criminal networks to restart the refining infrastructure previously destroyed by security forces.

“All identified sites and equipment have been deactivated in line with operational procedures, while surveillance and monitoring of adjoining creek corridors remain ongoing,” he said.

The naval spokesman said that the sustained operations were focused on preventing the re-establishment of illegal refining camps and dismantling support structures sustaining crude oil theft.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to intelligence-driven operations aimed at protecting critical national assets, securing the maritime domain and denying economic saboteurs freedom of action in the Niger Delta.

Shock As Assailants Behead Three Women In Enugu State

Tragedy struck communities in Enugu State after two separate attacks allegedly led to the deaths of three women over the weekend in Igbo-Etiti Local Council.

In the first incident, which occurred around 3:10 p.m. on Saturday in Ukehe, a 40-year-old suspect, Anikwe Onyebuchi, allegedly used a cutlass to kill his 60-year-old mother, Felicia Anikwe, in the Nkporogwu area of the community.

Residents alleged that the attack followed an argument over food after the woman was reportedly unable to provide him with a meal on his return home. A video circulating on social media showed the woman’s body lying in a pool of blood, while an angry mob descended on the suspect before security operatives intervened.

In a separate incident at Agu-Ekwegbe community, another suspect, Joshua Eze, allegedly killed his sister, Nwabuche Eze, and her daughter, Favour Eze. The motive for the attack has yet to be established.

Confirming the incidents, the Nigeria Police Force said the remains of Felicia Anikwe had been recovered for possible autopsy.

Police also disclosed that the bodies of Nwabuche Eze and her daughter were discovered in a shallow grave alongside a dead white cock, raising suspicions of possible ritual involvement.

The command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, said Onyebuchi was rescued from a mob that had severely beaten him and was taken to hospital for treatment.

He added that Joshua Eze later died in hospital after he was also attacked by a mob before police intervention.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Giwa, condemned the killings and directed a full-scale investigation into the incidents. He also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands and urged members of the public to hand over suspects to lawful authorities for proper prosecution.
