He’s ahead of Haaland – Martinez names world’s best striker

Inter Milan captain, Lautaro Martinez, has named Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane as the best striker in the world at the moment.

The Argentine striker believes Kane is ahead of Manchester City striker, Erling Haaland because of his ball control, link-up play, and reading of the game.

“Harry Kane,” Martinez told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked to name the best striker in the world.

“I put him ahead of Haaland for the way he controls the ball, links up and reads the game, and also his headers. He’s a phenomenon.”

Kane has netted 58 goals this season across all competitions for Bayern.

The England skipper recently led Vincent Kompany’s side to the Bundesliga title.

He could yet seal a domestic double when Bayern clash with Stuttgart in Saturday’s DFB-Pokal final.

  • Some People Told Tinubu, I Wanted To Kill Him.. Kashim Shettima

Some People Told Tinubu, I Wanted To Kill Him.. Kashim Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday revealed that barely three months after President Bola Tinubu was sworn into office, some people from Borno State visited the President and warned him to stop wearing the traditional attire he had given him during the 2023 campaign.

He said they alleged the garments had been used to charm the President and would lead to his death.

Shettima, however, said Tinubu not only rejected the claim but responded by deliberately wearing the clothing for an entire week as a public rebuke to what he called a story that “did not add up.”

The Vice President disclosed this in his address at the public presentation of the autobiography of the former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (retd), titled “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” in Abuja on Tuesday.

Shettima, who represented the President at the event, used the incident to illustrate what he described as the dangerous spread of suspicion in Nigerian public life.

He also compared the rising spate of suspicion with the Sultan of Sokoto’s account of how Gowon would receive gallons of fura sent weekly from the Sultan’s family in Sokoto to Dodan Barracks in Lagos.

He noted that Gowon accepted the gesture without any suspicion, in a spirit of trust that he said has since been eroded.

The VP said, “His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto had been narrating the story of the family of the Sultan sending gallons of fura every week to Gen Yakubu Gowon in Dodan Barracks, because of the trust and confidence Gen Gowon was willingly receiving it without any suspicion.

“But now the game is different. Suspicion smears our relationships, and it ought not to be. We are essentially one people tied to a common destiny.”

Narrating his personal story involving Tinubu, Shettima recalled that in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential primaries, as the President canvassed support across the North, he sourced traditional Borno attire and a cap for him to wear at campaign events, so the candidate could blend in with the northern crowd.

He said positive feedback from Tinubu’s aides proved that the clothing fitted well, and Tinubu wore it repeatedly in the campaign.

However, the confrontation came just months after the victory.

Shettima said he had travelled to Beijing, China, in October 2023 to represent Tinubu at the 3rd Belt and Road Initiative Forum, held from October 16 to 18, one of his early high-profile foreign assignments as Vice President.

When he returned from China, Tinubu summoned him and delivered a message from a group of people about the clothes.

He narrated, “When I came back from China, where I had represented him at the Belt and Road Initiative Conference, he said: ‘Sit down. Your people came to me and said I should stop wearing those dresses you gave me. They said I must have been charmed, and that I am going to die and you will become the president.’”

Shettima noted that Tinubu dismantled the accusation because it did not add up.

According to Shettima, he responded, “Their story did not add up, because when you gave me those dresses, I was an aspirant. I wasn’t even the candidate. Neither were you the vice presidential candidate.”

However, he said the President proceeded to wear the dresses for a week.

“For one week, to prove to them that he is not a fetish, he wore those dresses.

“These are some of the gimmicks taking place in power circles in Nigeria nowadays,” Shettima told the audience.

Shettima poured encomiums on Gowon, saying his life embodied the opposite of sectarian suspicion.

Shettima cited Gowon’s establishment of the National Youth Service Corps as a reconciliation instrument, his legacy in the Economic Community of West African States, and the urgent need for Nigerians to confront divisive forces that seek to undermine unity.

He referenced Plateau State, whose governor, Caleb Mutfwang, was present, and urged an end to the cycles of violence by highlighting the linguistic, genealogical and historical ties among communities currently divided by bloodshed on the Plateau.

On Gowon, whom he called “the last man standing” among Nigeria’s post-independence military generation, Shettima said the autobiography is “a bottom of memory at a time when our country needs a discipline of remembrance.”

He said, “There are people who are remembered before they leave office.

“There are others whose memory endures because the office became, in their hands, an instrument of national meaning. General Gowon belongs to the second company.”

He also quoted Martin Luther King Jr. in closing, calling on Nigerians to either unite or face collective ruin.

“Let us learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools,” he stated.

  • Panic In Oyo State As Police Intensifies Effort To Rescue Abducted School Pupils , Teachers

Panic In Oyo State As Police Intensifies Effort To Rescue Abducted School Pupils , Teachers

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has deployed more detectives from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, to collaborate with the joint security team as part of intensified efforts to secure the release of the abducted teachers and students of three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

An informed police source said in Ibadan on Tuesday that the deployment was aimed at rescuing the victims unhurt.

The source said, “More detectives have been deployed from the Force Headquarters to collaborate with the joint security operatives already on the ground.

“The kidnapped students and their teachers will soon breathe the air of freedom as the government and the relevant security agencies are leaving no stone unturned.

“The security agencies will explore all opportunities to ensure that the students return safely to their parents. There is no cause for the parents and the people of the state to be apprehensive as the government is on top of the situation.”

Scores of teachers and students of Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area of the state were abducted during coordinated attacks on Friday around 9:30am.

Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 children and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School, adding that one person was killed during the attack.

This came as palpable fear gripped residents of Ogbomoso over an alleged invasion of the town by bandits.

The panic saw parents rush to schools to take their children home, while some schools hurriedly shut down.

There were also rumours that bandits had infiltrated Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.

A resident of Ogbomoso, Kazeem Abdullah, said students and pupils in both public and private primary schools jumped through windows and fled their classrooms and school premises.

“Many parents compounded the problem as they started rushing to their children’s schools to pick them up,” he said.

Reports also emerged from Ajaawa, headquarters of Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area, that bandits were disrupting peace in the area.

However, the Oyo State Police Command described the alleged infiltration of bandits into Ogbomoso as a false alarm.

The command, in a statement by its Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the panic stemmed from claims by some students that unfamiliar faces were sighted behind the school fence.

The police said investigations revealed that the individuals were an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to the Kwara State Command, Ilorin, alongside two civilians in a Toyota Venza SUV.

The statement read, “The individuals were questioned and explained that they had merely visited the lady among them in celebration of her birthday.

“During verification and due diligence, relevant NSCDC authorities in Ogbomoso were contacted to confirm the identity and status of the officer involved.

“It was further observed that during the interaction, an altercation reportedly occurred between some teachers and the visitors, which inadvertently heightened suspicion within the school premises.

“Consequently, some students began spreading unverified claims to neighbouring schools and surrounding communities, thereby escalating panic and tension across parts of Ogbomoso and Ajaawa before the actual facts of the incident were established.”

The command added that it had intensified patrols and visibility policing around the affected communities, while critical stakeholders had been engaged to reassure residents and restore public confidence.

“The area remains peaceful, while normal academic, commercial and social activities have since resumed.

“The command, therefore, warns against the deliberate spread of fake news, misinformation and unverified security reports capable of causing unnecessary panic, heightening tension and undermining public peace,” the statement added.

Similarly, the management of LAUTECH dismissed reports that the institution had been shut over fears of an attack by suspected bandits.

A statement by the institution’s Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, said there was no truth in the rumour circulating about the closure of the university.

Balogun said there was no reason for such action.

The statement read, “This is to strongly debunk the rumour making the rounds that the management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has closed down the university for fear of invasion by bandits.

“This is to inform our students, parents and guardians that there is no reason for management to shut down the university. The institution remains in session.

“As a matter of fact, our students are currently writing their examinations, and the exercise continues on Wednesday. Management regrets any inconvenience this unfounded rumour may have caused.”

Meanwhile, traditional rulers in the five local government areas of Ogbomosoland on Tuesday called for the establishment of a military base in Oriire LGA.

The monarchs said the move would help curb crimes, particularly attacks by armed bandits.

Speaking during the meeting, the Alapa of Apa, Akin Akintola, lamented the worsening insecurity around forest communities in Ogbomoso and adjoining areas.

He said, “We, the traditional rulers, are demanding immediate federal intervention, including the establishment of a military formation close to the forest reserve in Oriire Local Government Area.

“We are requesting that a military base be sited very close to the forest reserve. If we have soldiers and artillery stationed there, it will provide protection for many communities in this zone.”

The monarch stressed that while police officers had been making efforts, the scale and sophistication of the attacks now required military operations.

“I don’t think the police can handle this alone. If you establish only a police station, it may cover just two or three communities. But a military base will offer broader protection and help secure the entire area.

“South-West has now been infiltrated by bandits. We do not have the capacity or the wherewithal to confront these people ourselves. That is why we are appealing to the Federal Government to act urgently,” Akintola added.

The monarchs specifically appealed to President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to approve the establishment of a military base in the Ogbomoso zone, particularly around Oriire and nearby forest corridors.

“Our people can no longer sleep peacefully. Farmers are afraid to go to their farms because of the fear of attacks and abduction,” the monarch said.

Female Car Learner Kills Three Children In PH, Mother Seeks Justice

A lady being taught how to drive by her boyfriend has killed three children in the Ogbunabali axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The tragedy happened when the lady behind the wheel rammed into the residence of Mrs. Amarachi Promise Esomonu, killing her three children.

A source who resides in the area said the incident occurred on May 15, adding that the children were aged 10, four and three respectively.

“They were at home in Ogbunabali when this happened. A young man was teaching his girlfriend how to drive. So, as she was driving, people started shouting. Before we knew it, the car had rammed into the woman’s house.

“That was how her three children lost their lives. It is very painful, and the mother has been crying because the children were all going to school,” the source stated.

Meanwhile, in a viral video on Tuesday, the distraught woman was seen sobbing uncontrollably and seeking help.

Esomonu raised the alarm that the culprits are not saying anything, pointing out that she thinks of the children every time.

The distraught woman further revealed that the alarm she sets to start preparing her children for school every weekday morning keeps ringing, but she can no longer find her children.

“Every day I wake up in the morning and remember them. Every day my alarm rings, but there are no kids for me to dress for school.

“Their killers are comfortable. They aren’t saying anything,” the grieving mother said while fighting back tears.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Blessing Agabe, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered an investigation.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased toddlers, she said the State Police Command is saddened by the tragic incident, which she said has generated “widespread grief and concern” within the state.

Agabe, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said CP Adepoju extended his condolences to the family and assured that every necessary step would be taken to ensure that the family gets justice in the matter.

The statement reads: “The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened by the tragic incident which reportedly claimed the lives of three children from the same family.

“The unfortunate development has generated widespread grief and concern within the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, extends his heartfelt condolences and profound sympathy to the bereaved family during this difficult and painful period.

“He (CP Adepoju) prays that God grants the family the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“The Commissioner of Police wishes to assure the affected family and the general public that the Command has commenced a thorough investigation into the incident.

“He further reassures all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to ensure that justice is not only served, but manifestly seen to be served in accordance with the law.

“The Command remains committed to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and cooperate with investigators as inquiries continue.

“The Rivers State Police Command once again sympathises with the bereaved family and reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and the pursuit of justice,” the statement added.

Ekiti North APC Senatorial primary failed to meet standard – Dare Owolabi demands cancellation

A senatorial aspirant for Ekiti North Senatorial District, Otunba Oluwadare Owolabi, has called for the cancellation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election held on Monday, May 18, 2026, citing alleged irregularities and violence during the exercise.

Owolabi made the demand while addressing journalists shortly after the primaries conducted across the district, which covers Ikole, Oye, Moba, Ilejemeje and Ido-Osi local government areas of Ekiti State.

According to him, the process failed to meet democratic standards and should not be regarded as a credible primary election.

“There was no proper accreditation and the votes were not counted the way they should have been counted. What happened yesterday cannot be described as a free and fair election,” he said.

The aspirant alleged that officials deployed to supervise the election were government employees, compromising the neutrality of the exercise.

He also accused organizers of deliberately disrupting the venue, creating panic among party members and supporters.

“People ran for their lives because the venue became chaotic. I consider what happened an act of terrorism against democracy,” Owolabi maintained.

He rejected the result announced after the exercise, stating that the figures credited to him did not reflect the actual votes cast by his supporters.

While the official result allocated to him was about 2,800 votes, he said reports from his supporters indicated he secured about 4,341 votes.

“The result announced yesterday was not correct. The votes attributed to me were far below what my supporters confirmed,” Owolabi said.

Owolabi called for the immediate cancellation of the primary and demanded a fresh exercise conducted under a transparent and credible process.
