Ejimakor Demands Release Of Suspected IPOB Member Detained Since 2021

Barr Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called for the immediate release of one Chukwu Sunday Obasi.

Obasi, according to Ejimakor, has been in detention at the custody of the Department of the State Services (DSS) since 2021 for allegedly belonging to the pro-Biafra group.

Ejimakor, in a message sent to THE WHISTLER on Sunday, called on human rights advocates and public-spirited individuals to join the call for the release of the detainee.

He stated that, “On mere suspicion of being an IPOB member, Chukwu Sunday Obasi has been detained by the DSS since March 2021 without trial and access to lawyers/relatives. Please join me in publicly calling for his immediate release or at least presented in court to defend himself.”

IPOB, founded in 2012 by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been campaigning for a referendum to enable the people of the Igbo race of South-East Nigeria to decide if they want to belong to Nigeria’s super structure, or have their sovereign country. Kanu is currently being detained at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Sokoto, after being convicted of treason-related offences by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, last year. Kanu has however appealed his sentencing on the grounds that the activities of IPOB are within the scope of fundamental human rights.

Ogun govt, IBEDC pledge collaboration towards improved electricity supply

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed the readiness of the state to collaborate with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company PLC, IBEDC, towards improving electricity supply across the state.

Governor Abiodun made this remark during a courtesy visit by the Board and Management of IBEDC to the Ogun State to his office on Thursday according to a statement signed by the company management and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

On the issue of vandalisation of power infrastructure, Governor Abiodun also assured that the state government is working on introducing stricter laws and enforcement mechanisms to deter vandalism and protect critical electricity assets.

The Governor also disclosed that “the State intends to implement tighter regulatory controls within its electricity market to ensure that only credible and technically competent operators are licensed to operate in the state.”

According to him, the state government will develop a clear roadmap for licensing and regulation of electricity market participants, while ensuring proper oversight of the process.

Earlier, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc, IBEDC, reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity supply and strengthening power infrastructure across Ogun State through strategic collaboration with the State Government.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr ,Taiwo Afolabi, an IBEDC Board member stated that IBEDC’s transition to new core investors represents a significant turning point for the company as fresh investments aimed at strengthening electricity infrastructure and improving service delivery across the company’s franchise areas, especially Ogun State, will become a reality.

The Managing Director/CEO of IBEDC, Mr Deolu Ijose, in his presentation during the meeting, highlighted the strategic importance of Ogun State within the IBEDC franchise due to its rapid industrialisation, growing population, and increasing energy demand.

Ijose emphasised the need for stronger regulatory coordination and strategic collaboration between IBEDC and the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, OGERC, to ensure a sustainable and investment-friendly electricity market framework.

Among the key requests presented by IBEDC were “support for the licensing of Olumo Electricity Distribution Company Plc (OEDCL) as IBEDC’s Ogun State subsidiary, development of a coordinated engagement framework for market participants, alignment on franchise boundaries and reduction of regulatory overlap within the electricity market.”

He sought the support of the State Government in securing “Right-of-Way approvals, protecting critical electricity infrastructure against vandalism and sabotage, and facilitating industrial power corridors to support economic growth and industrial development.”

Ijose identified strategic projects requiring collaboration and support to include “the Redeemed 33kV Feeder, Magada 33kV Feeder, and the Double Circuit 33kV Feeder from Oke-Aro to Magboro. The projects would significantly improve power reliability and industrial energy access within Ogun State.”

  • FHA Fires Back At Developers Over Land Grabbing Allegations

FHA Fires Back At Developers Over Land Grabbing Allegations

The management of the Federal Housing Authority has dismissed allegations of land grabbing, extortion and administrative high-handedness levelled against its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oyetunde Ojo, describing the claims as baseless and misleading.

In a statement signed by the FHA’s Head of Public Affairs, Kenneth Chigelu, on Sunday,
the Authority accused some media organisations, including Daily Nigerian, Leadership and ThisDay, of publishing allegations by a purported coalition of estate developers without seeking the agency’s side of the story.

The FHA said the group behind the accusations were not genuine developers but professional land grabbers frustrated by reforms introduced by the current management.

According to the Authority, the launch of a digitalisation programme on May 1, 2024, ended analogue operations and curtailed practices such as loss of files, double allocations and document forgery.

The agency stated that the digitisation process, alongside the deployment of a MAX 350 drone for land mapping and monitoring, had improved transparency and enabled the identification of illegally encroached properties.

It added that a Verification, Regularisation and Ratification exercise was conducted nationwide to allow genuine allottees with incomplete documentation to regularise their property records.

The FHA maintained that many individuals who could not provide proof of ownership resorted to media attacks after failing to benefit from loopholes in the old system.

The Authority also denied allegations of delays in land development approvals, insisting that approvals are now processed within two weeks through its One Stop Shop platform, provided applicants submit complete documentation.

It further stated that stricter measures had been introduced to prevent the undervaluation of statutory fees, a move it said had affected individuals allegedly collaborating with compromised officials to short-change the agency.

The FHA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that it would not be distracted by what it described as blackmail from disgruntled land grabbers.

The agency challenged members of the alleged coalition to publicly identify themselves and provide genuine proof of land allocation and verification documents.

It also urged the public to disregard the allegations, insisting that efforts to reposition the Authority and safeguard government property would continue uninterrupted.

  • Miyetti Allah Seeks Loans To Cut Beef Prices

Miyetti Allah Seeks Loans To Cut Beef Prices

The Miyetti-Allah Fulaku Yeso Yeso Development Association (MAFYDA) has urged the Federal Government to provide loan facilities to butchers nationwide to enable them to buy cows directly from farmers at livestock markets, rather than through middlemen.

The association said direct access to farmers would greatly reduce the high cost of beef, skin and offal across the country.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), MAFYDA National Security Adviser, Comrade Pariya, identified middlemen between Fulani herders and butchers as major drivers of the rising prices.

He said most butchers could not afford to buy cattle directly from farmers due to lack of funds and were compelled to buy on credit from dealers at inflated prices.

“The dealers take advantage of the butchers’ financial challenges to exploit them,” Pariya said.

“Most butchers usually pay them after selling the meat.

“But if the government supports the butchers with loans, they can go to the cattle markets and buy the number of cows they need. In the long run, prices will crash across the country,” he said.

Pariya said a large cow currently costs between N500,000 and N750,000 at livestock markets, but dealers often resell them for between N1.3 million and N1.5 million, depending on location.

He also cited insecurity and high transportation costs as contributing factors to the price hike.

“Security challenges play a role, but it’s often exaggerated. They will tell you there is a security threat in a certain location, but when you get there, you find nothing.

“If butchers can go directly to the market and buy from farmers, everything will be easier,” he said.

Also speaking, MAFYDA Secretary in Taraba, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, attributed the high cost of beef to rising prices of veterinary drugs and vaccines, consultation fees, and lack of grazing land.

NAN reports that a kilogramme of beef, which sold for between N5,500 and N6,500 earlier in the year, now costs between N8,000 and N9,000, depending on location.

  • Former IGP Adamu Rejects APC Nasarawa Guber Primary

Former IGP Adamu Rejects APC Nasarawa Guber Primary

Former Inspector-General of Police and governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed Abubakar-Adamu, has rejected the emergence of Senator Aliyu Ahmed-Wadada as the party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Nasarawa State.

Adamu’s rejection followed the declaration of Ahmed-Wadada as winner of the APC governorship primary by the Chairman of the Nasarawa State APC Governorship Primary Committee, Professor Theodore Maiyaki (SAN).

Speaking with journalists in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, the former IGP alleged that the declaration did not enjoy the support of the majority of APC members and stakeholders in the state.

According to him, the primary election was heavily compromised and manipulated against the wishes of genuine party members across Nasarawa State.

Adamu further alleged that in several areas where elections did not hold, result sheets were allegedly taken away and manipulated by some officials of the Nasarawa State Government in collaboration with certain local government chairmen.

He maintained that the exercise lacked transparency and accountability, insisting that in areas where voting genuinely took place and votes were counted, he won convincingly.

The former police chief appealed to the leadership of the APC and relevant party authorities to investigate the alleged irregularities and injustices surrounding the conduct of the primary election.

He stated that his mission to rescue and reposition Nasarawa State remained alive and expressed confidence that he would still contest and win the 2027 governorship election.

“Should justice prevail, we shall continue our journey within the APC. However, if justice is denied, we shall communicate to you the next line of action and the political platform under which we shall contest the 2027 governorship race,” he said.

Adamu also urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding despite the outcome of the primary election.

“We shall remain united, hopeful and committed to the struggle for fairness and a better Nasarawa State,” he added.

Senator Ahmed-Wadada had earlier been declared winner of the APC governorship primary after polling 195,285 votes to defeat Mohammed Abubakar-Adamu, who secured 39,675 votes.

Lagos On Alert Over Ebola Surge In Congo, Uganda

…No Cause For Alarm, Commissioner Assures Residents

The Lagos State Government has assured residents that it is closely monitoring the ongoing Ebola outbreak in parts of Central and East Africa, particularly in Congo and Uganda.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, the state is on heightened surveillance following reports of the outbreak, which has recorded hundreds of suspected cases and significant fatalities across the affected countries.

“We are closely monitoring the evolving Ebola outbreak situation in Central and East Africa,” he said in a statement shared on X on Sunday.

The outbreak has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization, due to concerns over cross-border transmission risks and logistical challenges in the affected regions.

Abayomi said the Lagos State Government has strengthened its biosecurity framework to ensure early detection, rapid response, and containment of any potential importation of the virus.

He noted that the state’s Incident Command System, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, remains fully operational and capable of mobilising emergency response resources at short notice.

The commissioner added that the Emergency Operations Centre continues to monitor disease patterns through surveillance teams and epidemiologists deployed across communities.

Key health infrastructure, including the Lagos State Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba and its Biosafety Level 3 laboratory, remains on standby for testing, diagnosis, and case management of high-risk infectious diseases.

Lagos authorities are also working in coordination with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) to strengthen surveillance at airports, seaports, and land borders.

Community health workers, civil society groups, and local associations have also been activated to enhance early warning reporting at the grassroots level.

Abayomi urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, stressing that no Ebola case has been recorded in Lagos State.

He advised anyone who recently travelled to affected regions or had contact with travellers from Congo or Uganda and is experiencing symptoms to contact emergency lines 767 or 112, or reach the State Epidemiologist via 0802 316 9485.

“There is currently no cause for alarm. Please remain vigilant and stand by for more detailed information this week, as we monitor the situation in the Congo very closely and continue to prepare.

“If you have recently travelled to the affected areas in Congo or Uganda, or you have been in close contact with persons who travelled there and have medical concerns, you may reach out to our emergency numbers,” Abayomi added.

THE WHISTLER reports that so far, no fewer than 177 deaths have been recorded from about 700 suspected cases in Central and East Africa.

  • APC governorship primaries mockery of democracy — Sarkin Sharifai

APC governorship primaries mockery of democracy — Sarkin Sharifai

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Nasarawa State, Professor Mohammed Sani Haruna, popularly known as Sarkin Sharifai, has condemned the party’s recently concluded gubernatorial primaries, describing the exercise as a “mockery of democracy” and a “deeply flawed process.”

Haruna, a former Executive Vice Chairman of NASENI, made his position known through a statement released by his media aide, Peter Ewu.

The APC governorship primaries were declared in favour of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, chairman of the election committee, Professor Theodore Maiyaki (SAN), announced him as the winner of the contest.

However, reacting to the outcome, Sarkin Sharifai rejected the results outright, alleging widespread irregularities, voter suppression, and manipulation of figures to favour a preferred candidate.

According to him, people allegedly known to be loyal to the government-backed aspirant were deployed as electoral officials across several parts of the state, thereby compromising the credibility of the process.

He further claimed that many wards and polling centres never received electoral materials or officials, leaving numerous party members unable to participate in the exercise.

“In my own electoral ward, neither electoral officials nor voting materials arrived, denying me and many others the opportunity to vote,” he stated.

The aspirant also alleged that party supporters in several locations waited from morning until late at night for officials who never showed up, resulting in frustrathe tion and disenfranchisement among loyal APC members.

He expressed concern over reports of intimidation, harassment, and disruption allegedly carried out by certain individuals during the exercise, noting that such actions created fear and confusion in some polling areas.

Haruna insisted that his claims were backed by videos, photographs, reports, and testimonies gathered from party stakeholders and observers across Nasarawa State.

“Anyone with a conscience and a sense of accountability before God should reject these results. What happened was nothing more than allocation of figures in most wards across the state. It was an insult to democracy and a betrayal of the electoral process,” he said.

He accused party leaders of denying members their constitutional right to freely choose their candidate, describing the entire process as a charade orchestrated with impunity.

The APC chieftain called on the party’s National Secretariat to cancel the exercise and conduct fresh, transparent, and credible governorship primaries in line with democratic principles.

Despite his grievances, Haruna maintained that he and his supporters remain committed to peace, political maturity, and democratic engagement as the 2027 general elections approach.

He urged his supporters to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid violence while efforts are made to address the alleged injustice.

“Politics should never become a source of hatred, division, or violence among our people,” he added.

The governorship aspirant further disclosed that he had begun extensive consultations with supporters, political associates, elders, youth and women groups, community leaders, and other stakeholders within and outside the state.

According to him, the consultations are aimed at reviewing the current political situation and determining the most appropriate course of action in the interest of his supporters and the people of Nasarawa State.

“At the end of these consultations, we will formally unveil our next political direction and position to the public,” he concluded.

  • PDP affirms Maurice Vunobolki as Adamawa governorship candidate for 2027 polls

PDP affirms Maurice Vunobolki as Adamawa governorship candidate for 2027 polls

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, affirmed the sole aspirant who presented himself for the governorship ticket in Adamawa State, Chief Maurice Vunobolki, as its governorship candidate.

Vunobolki was endorsed by delegates of the PDP from across the 21 local government areas who gathered in Yola for the affirmation exercise.

Besides Vunobolki, one other aspirant, Caleb Andrew Myebangara, was said to be seeking the ticket, but he did not appear at the Mahmud Ribadu Square venue of the affirmation exercise, reportedly because he belongs to the faction of the party not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The motion for Vunobolki’s candidature was moved by a former member of the House of Representatives, Ja’afaru Ribadu, and seconded by the chairman of Yola North Local Government, Ibrahim Jimeta, after which the aspirant was subjected to a voice vote by delegates, with the “Yes” votes prevailing.

Thereafter, the chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary for Adamawa State, Debo Ologunagba, declared Maurice Vunobolki as the nominated and affirmed governorship candidate of the PDP in the state for the 2027 general election.

In his acceptance speech, Vunobolki appealed to all PDP members in the state to give him the support he would need to win the general election.

He said that in his professional career in development consulting, he has travelled across every part of Adamawa State, has been part of solutions to many of the state’s challenges, and is in a position to provide further solutions if given the opportunity.

He challenged candidates of other political parties to debate sessions in which they would demonstrate their knowledge of the people they seek to govern and outline their plans for the people.
