A former Kano South senator, Kabiru Gaya, has failed in his bid to secure the senatorial ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections.

Gaya, who recently defected to the NDC after brief stints in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had hoped to stage a return to the Senate. He joined the party alongside ex-Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso amid a broader political realignment.

However, at a meeting held on Sunday at Kwankwaso’s residence on Miller Road in Kano, the NDC opted for Kassim Batayya as its consensus candidate for the Kano South Senatorial District.

The decision was announced by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who shared the outcome in a Facebook post. He later released a video showing Gaya expressing support for Batayya, although the former senator noted he was not present when the decision was finalised.

The development marks a setback for Gaya, who represented Kano South in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 and had earlier served as governor of Kano State during the Third Republic.

Meanwhile, the NDC in Kano is currently conducting its primary elections for various positions, including the Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a twist of political fortunes, Gaya’s successor, Kawu Sumaila, who defeated him in 2023 under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has since defected to the APC and is expected to contest again in 2027.

Plateau United technical adviser, Gbenga Ogunbote has attributed his team’s final day victory over Kano Pillars to the effort of the players, and technical crew.

The Peace Boys beat Kano Pillars 1-0 in a keenly contested encounter at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.

The victory confirmed Plateau United’s Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, status for next season.

Ogunbote confessed it was a difficult achievement for the team.

“It was a collective responsibility everybody had a share in the game,” Ogunbote reacted in a post-match interview.

“It was a project I must confess took a big toll on me, it didn’t come easy until the last day of the campaign.

“This is the first time I will be having it difficult in my entire coaching career, I commend everyone for working tirelessly to achieve this for the club.”

Kano Pillars forward, Ahmed Musa has commended his teammates for their resilience and determination following the team’s relegation survival.

The Sai Masu Gida maintained their top-flight status despite going down to a 1-0 defeat against Plateau United at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday.

The four-time champions finished the season in 15th position with 48 points from 38 matches.

Musa thanked football stakeholders in the state for their support during the season.

“Despite our slow and unfamiliar start to the campaign, our darling club, Kano Pillars FC, showed resilience, character and determination to retain its NPFL status for another season,” Musa was quoted in his appreciation message.

“This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support, prayers and encouragement from the good people of Kano and football lovers across the country.”

Two more players have arrived the Super Eagles London camp ahead of their Unity Cup semi-final encounter against the Warriors of Zimbabwe, DAILY POST reports.

The latest arrivals are centre-back Igoh Ogbuh, and attacking midfielder Alhassan Yusuf.

The duo’s arrival increased the number of players in camp to 19.

Éric Chelle’s side opened camp for the invitational tournament last Saturday with 14 players.

They were later  joined in camp on Sunday by Chibuike Nwaiwu, Francis Uzoho, and Rafiu Durosinmi.

The Super Eagles will continue their preparations for the clash against Zimbabwe with another training session tonight at the Cray Valley FC, Middle Park Avenue, London .

The price of liquefied petroleum gas, known as cooking gas, has increased nationwide as marketers lament scarcity. 

This comes as the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers disclosed that cooking gas price has skyrocketed to N1,500 per kilogram, up from N1,200 in Abuja. 

NALPGAM president, Edu Inyang, and the Executive Secretary, Mr Bassey Essien disclosed this in a joint statement at the weekend. 

This means that the cooking gas price rose by N300 per liter, or 25 percent. 

The implication is that Nigerians already grappling with high cost of living will have to pay N300 or more to get cooking gas depending on the location across the country.

“The citizens of Nigeria have woken up to buy cooking gas, which should be a social item, at a prohibitive cost of over N1,500 per kg,” NALPGAM stated. 

The marketers fear that with the price hike, Nigerians may rise against owners of cook gas filling stations if nothing is done by the federal government. 

“We feel that if the situation is not immediately checked, the citizens may rise against the owners of gas filling stations,” the marketers added. 

DAILY POST recalls that the cooking gas price had stood at N1200 per kilogram as of earlier May 2026. 

More pain for Nigerians as cooking gas price increases nationwide

Former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly and ex-South-East spokesman for President Bola Tinubu, Denge Onoh, has stated that former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon should apologize to the Igbo.

Onoh criticized Gowon over his recent comments on civilian casualties during the Nigerian Civil War, describing the remarks as a dangerous minimisation of the human tragedy of the conflict.

Gowon had during an interview on Arise Television said that after visiting former Biafran territories following the war, he noticed black spots on palm trees and was informed they were bullet marks.

Gowon had reportedly concluded from the observation that most of the bullets fired by the Nigerian army hit palm trees, not people.

Responding in a statement, Onoh stated that the claim contradicted historical accounts, eyewitness testimonies and international reports on the civil war, insisting that the comments failed to reflect the true scale of suffering experienced during the conflict.

He said the war, fought between 1967 and 1970, claimed an estimated three million lives, most of them through starvation and disease linked to the federal blockade, in addition to civilian casualties caused by combat operations, bombings and reprisals.

“Reducing these horrors to bullets harmlessly striking palm trees does not withstand basic scrutiny.

“It ignores the well-documented humanitarian crisis, including widespread kwashiorkor among children, mass displacement and the devastating human cost of prolonged fighting across the South-East,” Onoh said.

Civil war: Gowon should apologise to Igbo – Onoh

Remo Stars have set an unwanted record in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, following their relegation to the Nigeria National League, NNL, DAILY POST reports.

The Sky Blue Stars became the first club in NPFL history to win the title and suffer relegation the following season.

Usman Abdallah’s side confirmed their relegation after battling to a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance on the final day of the 2025/26 season at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Sunday.

Remo Stars finished the season in 17th position with 47 points from 38 matches.

The other relegated clubs are El-kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United, and Wikki Tourists.

Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Doma United, and Ranchers Bees will replace the relegated clubs in the NPFL next season.
