‘I’m surprised Amaechi wants to be president, he’s not an asset’ – Femi Otubanjo

Prof. Femi Otubanjo, Director of Research, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs says he is surprised the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, is vying for the number one seat in the country.

Speaking during an interview on the Arise News TV morning show, Otubanjo said he is surprised because the African Democratic Congress, ADC chieftain does not have what it takes for the presidential race.

“I’m surprised that Amaechi is struggling to be president. The problem is that Nigerians take politics as incantation, when you say something repeatedly, you feel you can do it”, he said.

According to him, “Amaechi should not have bothered himself” to contest the ADC primary election with former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.

Otubanjo also expressed pessimism about, Atiku garnering reasonable votes from Southern Nigeria in 2027, stating that the ADC has no prominent members in the region.

“It was as if Amaechi was not in the primary. Right now Atiku has no leg in the South.

“No prominent ADC member is from the South except Amaechi but Amaechi is not an asset”, he added.

Kanu was sharing his thoughts with Flashscore ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday.

Arsenal fly to Budapest on the back of winning their first Premier League title in 22 years.

Mikel Arteta’s men have also reached the final without losing a single game.

On the other hand, PSG are the defending champions and have already beaten English sides like Chelsea and Liverpool this campaign.

“I told my friends that last season, we were struggling against Manchester City, and they went on to win the league. But this season, the table changed, and we have come out on top to win the Premier League title,” Kanu said.

  • WHO Chief Heads To DRC As Ebola Outbreak Outpaces Response

WHO Chief Heads To DRC As Ebola Outbreak Outpaces Response

World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province continues to spread, straining response efforts on the ground.

“On my way to the DRC. Ebola is back. Ituri province is bearing the brunt. I will be on the ground with our WHO teams, partners, and the extraordinary health workers who have never stopped fighting, all working under the leadership of the Government of the DRC,” Tedros said in a post on X.

He added that the country had defeated Ebola sixteen times before, and that the seventeenth outbreak would be no different.

Tedros had earlier warned that eastern DRC was facing “a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict,” saying the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province was outpacing the response and that stopping transmission depended entirely on humanitarian access.

“Ongoing clashes are driving mass displacement, pushing exposed contacts into overcrowded camps and severing critical containment corridors. Frontline workers are risking everything, while attacks on health facilities make tracking cases and their contacts nearly impossible,” the WHO chief said.

Tedros noted that insecurity, attacks on health facilities and population movements were making it “nearly impossible” to trace contacts and isolate cases, adding that hunger was compounding the crisis with nearly 10m people across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu and Tanganyika facing acute hunger between January and June 2026.

“Hunger and disease are old companions,” he said. “People weakened by hunger are far more vulnerable to infections.”

DRC has reported nearly 1,000 suspected Ebola cases and more than 220 suspected deaths, though only one death has been laboratory confirmed, with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola driving the outbreak having no approved vaccine or treatment.

Uganda has recorded seven confirmed cases linked to cross-border movement from Ituri, and WHO has assessed the regional risk as very high while classifying the global risk as low.

Ojude Oba: Police deploy 2,500 operatives, promises hitch-free festival

No fewer than 2,500 operatives of the Ogun State Police Command , alongside operational assets, have been deployed across Ijebu Ode and adjoining communities ahead of the 2026 Ojude Oba Festival.

The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said the deployment is part of proactive security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful, safe, and hitch-free celebration during the annual cultural festival.

The annual cultural festival, which is celebrated on the third day after Eid el-Kabir, Ileya, provides the opportunity for the people of Ijebu land, who are usually dressed in various beautiful attires, to pay homage to the Awujale and display the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people, including horse riding, among other activities.

DAILY POST reports that the year 2026 festival would be the first celebrated without a monarch on the throne.

Recall that last year, the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was conspicuously absent at the festival due to health issues. He eventually died on July 13, 2025 at the age of 91 after reigning for 65 years.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, armoured personnel carriers, patrol vehicles, police motorcycles, surveillance teams, undercover operatives, and rapid response squads have been deployed to the Ojude Oba pavilion, major highways, hotels, worship centres, markets, motor parks, and other public spaces expected to witness heavy human and vehicular movement during the festival.

“The operation involves conventional police officers and tactical units drawn from the Police Mobile Force, SWAT, Violent Crime Response Unit, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Monitoring Unit, Force Intelligence Department, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, Motor Traffic Department, and other specialised units.

“Officers deployed for the operation have been instructed to maintain professionalism, civility, and respect for the rights of law-abiding citizens while carrying out their duties.

“Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been mandated to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers, community leaders, transport unions, event organisers, and other stakeholders to enhance intelligence gathering and ensure seamless security coordination throughout the festival period” the statement added.

Babaseyi explained that the security arrangement is designed to guarantee effective crowd control, intelligence-led policing, traffic management, anti-crime patrols, visibility policing, early threat detection, and rapid response to emergencies before, during, and after the celebration.

The command, however, warned criminal elements to stay away from the state, stressing that it remains fully prepared to decisively deal with anyone attempting to undermine the peaceful atmosphere of the celebration.
