Awka Catholic Bishop, Ezeokafor frowns at Tinubu’s unfulfilled campaign promises

‎The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev Paulinus Ezeokafor, has expressed strong dismay over President Bola Tinubu’s failure to fulfil the campaign promises he made to Nigerians during the 2023 general elections.

‎The Catholic Bishop expressed his disappointment while delivering a homily during a burial mass for Mrs Christiana Onuabuchi Ekweozor, who is the mother of Dr Augustine Azubuike Ekweozor, a chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
Speaking at the burial mass, Ezeokafor charged politicians on service, saying those who aspire to serve should know that they must be accountable to the masses.

‎He said: “Tinubu promised Nigerians that if he emerged winner of the 2023 presidential election, within his first two years, he would give us improved power supply. But sadly, the president remains unconcerned about fulfilling this promise.

‎”As the talk about this continues, he moved on and installed a mighty first-class solar system in Aso Rock. What this means is that there is no hope for improved power supply as far as the present Federal Government is concerned.

‎”This is what the presidency, which is supposed to be thinking and looking for what to do to ensure that the well-being of the common people is guaranteed, is telling us – Nigerians, you’re on your own.

‎”In a civilised society where things work, this is an impeachable act – abandoning common good to build your own home,” Ezeokafor argued.
The Bishop further lamented about the worsening challenges of insecurity and high cost of living occasioned by fuel subsidy removal, stating that the government was not showing any sign of feeling concerned for the common man.

‎”Insecurity of lives and property deteriorates while the presidency continues to relax in Aso Rock and enjoy the country’s wealth. Nigerians were promised that fuel subsidy would be reinvested in critical national infrastructure to make life in the country better, but we haven’t seen it.

‎”But has fuel subsidy been removed, or not? Where’s the removed subsidy going to? Where does it reflect on our lives?”

Speaking to the bereaved family and their loved ones who gathered at the mass, Ezeokafor charged them to open their eyes as the 2027 elections draw near, so they can elect a competent person who can change the present narrative in the country.

‎The cleric described the deceased matriarch, late Mrs Ekweozor, as a good Catholic, who lived and died in Christ. He consoled her children and all that were mourning her passing, urging them to take solace in the fact that she was a good Christian.

‎In a vote of thanks, one of the sons of the deceased, who was also the chief mourner, Dr Azubuike Ekweozor, thanked the Bishop, friends, associates and well-wishers of the Ekweozors, for honouring his mother.

‎The burial mass was attended by several Catholic priests, captains of industries across Nigeria, traditional rulers in Anambra State, top state government functionaries, including the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze, among others.

  • 2027: Atiku’s ex-aide Abbas emerges ADP presidential candidate to battle Tinubu, others

2027: Atiku’s ex-aide Abbas emerges ADP presidential candidate to battle Tinubu, others

Ambassador Aliyu Abbas has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party, ADP, to battle President Bola Tinubu and other 2027 presidential candidates.

Abbas emerged as the ADP candidate on Saturday morning at the National Convention of the party held in Abuja.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, said the results were announced at about 5:30 a.m, with the venue erupting in wild jubilation.

Aliyu Bin Abbas is a former political aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

“However, for the avoidance of doubt and to clarify the distinct trajectory of this candidacy, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas steps into this race on his own merits and under a completely independent platform.

“While he previously served as a close political aide to Atiku Abubakar (who is also contesting the 2027 presidency under the ADC platform), that administrative chapter formally ended over two years ago. Following a widely recognised political divergence, both leaders parted ways, with public consensus affirming that Ambassador Aliyu should chart his own course to champion the cause of the younger generation.

“Therefore, this candidacy is entirely autonomous. It stands fully divorced from the influence of old political blocs, serving neither as a proxy movement nor a strategic alignment with past principles, but as a direct response to the yearning of millions of Nigerian youths seeking fresh, uncompromised leadership.”

In his comment, the National Chairman of the ADP, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, congratulated all delegates, officers, members, and supporters of the ADP for remaining steadfast, disciplined, and committed to the progress of the party.

“Your sacrifice, patience, and loyalty have kept the party alive, united, and focused.

“The ADP has continued to present itself to Nigerians as the credible alternative. At a time when our country faces deep economic pressure, insecurity, unemployment, poverty, social tension, and loss of confidence in public institutions, Nigerians are searching for leadership that is sincere, competent, courageous, and compassionate,” he said.

Earlier, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is also from northern Nigeria, emerged as the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate to battle President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress flagbearer.

UCL final: Best attack vs best defence – O’Leary predicts Arsenal vs PSG clash

Arsenal legend, David O’Leary, has predicted that Saturday’s Champions League final will be a clash of two tactical styles.

The Gunners will be trying to claim the Double when they play current holders Paris Saint-Germain.

O’Leary has now dubbed it a match between the best attack and the best defence.

He told Sky Sports: “I think it will be a very close game. I don’t think there’s much in it. It’s who performs on the night and who takes their chances.

“It’s going to be a chess match of the best defence in the world, with probably on-form the best goalkeeper in the world, and one of the best midfielders protecting that back four in Declan Rice, against a team with the best attack in the world who can really hurt you, particularly on the break.

“You’ve got to respect PSG because their strength is going forward. We saw that in the Bayern Munich match. Two teams where the philosophy is to take each other on.”

Fatal road crash kills driver in Lagos — LASTMA

A lone car accident has claimed the life of a driver along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos, prompting a swift rescue and recovery operation by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force.

A statement by LASTMA said the tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, along the busy Oshodi-Apapa corridor.

Findings suggest the driver crashed after the Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, he was driving, suddenly lost control. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted several times before coming to a stop.

The impact of the crash was said to have been severe, resulting in the immediate death of the driver, whose body became trapped inside the wreckage.

LASTMA officials who were carrying out traffic management duties around the Iyana Isolo axis responded promptly to the scene. Working alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division, they successfully recovered the victim’s body from the damaged vehicle while ensuring the free flow of traffic and preventing further accidents on the road.

Following the recovery operation, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, SEHMU, evacuated the deceased to a public mortuary in line with established public health procedures.

The wrecked Honda Pilot SUV was subsequently handed over to officers of the Mosafejo Police Division for further investigation.

Authorities said investigations have commenced to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the fatal accident.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sadness over the loss of life and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.

He also urged motorists to be more careful on the roads by observing speed limits and complying with traffic regulations, especially during late-night and early-morning journeys.

“Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and every form of traffic infraction capable of precipitating avoidable tragedies on our roads. The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” Bakare-Oki said.

He stressed the need for road users to remain vigilant at all times and prioritise safety while driving.

  • Court Remands Blogger In Prison Over Fake Online Post On Tony Elumelu

Court Remands Blogger In Prison Over Fake Online Post On Tony Elumelu

The Federal High Court in Lagos ordered the remand of Nwanorue John Surpruchi, a 19-year-old blogger, following allegations that he published false and defamatory social media posts targeting Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of United Bank for Africa.

Surpruchi appeared in court on Friday to face a four-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal intimidation directed at the prominent business executive.

The prosecution accused the teenager of utilizing his account on X, operating under the handle @PROBLElEMCHIMKYI, to spread a fabricated report claiming that Elumelu had divorced his wife after a DNA test allegedly revealed that none of his seven children were biologically his.

The official charge sheet detailed the criminal conspiracy and cyberstalking offenses brought against the blogger.

“That you, Nwanorue John Surpruchi, and others now at large on or about the 5th day of April, 2026, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did conspire amongst yourselves to commit a felony, to wit, cyberstalking, by agreeing to use a computer system and network to disseminate false and injurious information against the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Bank for Africa, Mr Tony Elumelu, and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 27(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended),” the charge sheet reads.

The document further stated, “That you, Nwanorue John Surpruchi, and others now at large, on or about the 5th day of April, 2026, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, knowingly and intentionally sent and caused to be sent through a computer system via a Twitter account (x) known as ‘@PROBLElEMCHIMKYI’ (registered with your name) to John Surpruchi Nwanorue (phone number 07049845280 ) a message which you knew to be false and grossly offensive and menacing in character, to wit: that the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of UBA, Mr Tony Elumelu, had divorced his wife following a DNA discovery that none of his seven children belong to him, with Intent to cause annoyance, inconvenience, insult, hatred and ill will and criminal intimidation to him and his family. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 24 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended).”

The defendant entered a plea of not guilty after the court registrar read the charges to him. Following the plea, the police prosecutor from the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Alagbon, A.G. Obi, informed the court that she had only received the defendant’s bail application earlier that Friday morning.

Obi explained to the court that she required sufficient time to thoroughly study the defense’s documents and file an appropriate legal response.

Consequently, she requested that the trial judge remand the blogger in a correctional facility pending the formal determination of the bail application, while also asking for a definitive date to commence the trial.

In response, the defense counsel, Anslem Etoh, appealed to the court to grant a short adjournment so that the application for bail could be heard swiftly.

After listening to the submissions from both legal teams, the presiding judge, Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa, adjourned the case until June 19 for the formal hearing of the bail application, ordering that the teenager remain remanded until that date.
