PSG Edge Arsenal On Penalties To Retain Champions League Crown

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title on Saturday night, defeating Arsenal on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw following extra time.

The final began in perfect fashion for Arsenal, who stunned the French champions with an early breakthrough.

Kai Havertz fired the Gunners ahead in the sixth minute, finishing off a flowing move to send the Arsenal supporters into celebration and hand Mikel Arteta’s side an ideal start.

Arsenal then adopted a disciplined defensive approach, frustrating PSG for much of the contest as they sought to protect their slender advantage.

The Premier League side appeared on course for a historic triumph, but their resistance was finally broken in the 65th minute.

PSG were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the area, and Ousmane Dembele calmly stepped up to beat David Raya from the spot, restoring parity and setting up a tense finale.

Both sides searched for a winner during the remainder of normal time and throughout extra time.

Chances came and went at both ends, but neither team could find the decisive goal, forcing the final into a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.

The shootout remained finely balanced until Arsenal suffered a major setback when Eberechi Eze missed the club’s third penalty.

Hope returned moments later when goalkeeper David Raya produced a crucial save to deny Nuno Mendes, keeping Arsenal firmly in contention.

However, the decisive moment arrived when Arsenal defender Gabriel stepped forward and failed to convert his penalty. His miss handed PSG the advantage they needed, and the French giants made no mistake with their remaining efforts to secure victory.

The triumph delivered PSG’s second consecutive UEFA Champions League title, further cementing their status among Europe’s elite clubs.

For Arsenal, meanwhile, the painful wait for a first Champions League crown and a major European trophy continues after another heartbreaking night on the continent’s biggest stage.

While PSG celebrated another historic achievement, Arsenal’s players sank to the turf in despair, knowing they had come agonisingly close to ending their long European drought before falling at the final hurdle.

Reactions trail Tinubu’s tenure extension for Anunobi as NLN CEO

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure extension for the chief executive officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, has attracted mixed reactions.

Recall that President Tinubu recently extended the tenure of Anunobi for a final five-year term.

The move has stirred mixed reactions among stakeholders.

While some stakeholders lauded President Tinubu for Anunobi’s tenure extension, others kicked against the move.

Reacting in a statement on Saturday, Shehu Mustapha, the National Coordinator of the Coalition of Young Nigerian Librarians, said that the development would ensure “continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms, the completion of the National Library Headquarters project, and the realization of the institution’s 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.”

Mustapha said Prof. Anunobi has distinguished herself as a reformer and astute administrator, adding that since her first appointment in 2021, she has led several institutional reforms, including “the development and operationalization of the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.”

He called for focused leadership in the country’s literary and, indeed, education sectors.

The affirmation exercise, held before the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, party members, and stakeholders, was led by Adeloye Ogunmodede and featured the endorsement of candidates who emerged through consensus across the state.

In his welcome address, the Osun State Chairman of the APP, Oluseye Titus Odesola, described the gathering as a demonstration of unity, consensus, and confidence in the future of the party and the country.

“Today’s gathering is not merely a political ceremony but a demonstration of unity, cohesion, and shared conviction in the future of our party and the nation,” Odesola said.

He urged party members not to focus on the party’s current position but to look ahead to its prospects, stating that the affirmation exercise was sending a clear message about the party’s readiness for future electoral contests.

According to him, “the affirmation of candidates for the various elective positions reflects the confidence reposed in them by the party and its determination to move forward as a united political family.”

He encouraged more residents of Osun State to register with the party and participate actively in its activities, stressing that grassroots mobilisation remained essential to the party’s growth.

Odesola revealed that all the candidates affirmed by the party had been carefully scrutinised by party elders and were considered fit and qualified to represent the APP in their respective contests.

Bandits Abduct Retired General, Wife In Katsina

Bandits have kidnapped a retired Major General, Rabe Abubakar, and his wife along the Matazu axis of Katsina State.

The incident occurred on Saturday while the retired officer, a former Director of Defence Information, was travelling to Katsina for a wedding. According to a security source, the attackers ambushed his vehicle, opened fire, and abducted the couple.

The driver sustained gunshot injuries but managed to escape.

A video circulating on social media showed the victims’ red Peugeot 504 car parked at the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters, with visible bullet holes.

The abduction is the second involving a retired general in Katsina in recent times. In 2025, Brigadier-General Maharazu Tsiga, a former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was kidnapped and held for 56 days before regaining freedom.

Katsina State continues to face persistent security challenges despite efforts to curb criminal activities.

In a related development, bandits on Friday attacked Kiliya village in Dutsinma Local Government Area, killing at least 16 people shortly after Juma’at prayers during Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

A resident, who spoke anonymously, said the attackers stormed the village, causing panic among residents.

“People started running when they saw them, but the gunmen ordered everyone to stop,” he said.

He added that the assailants later moved toward a mechanic’s house and began shooting at residents and passersby.

The witness said he survived by hiding in a nearby house.

“After the prayers, we were sitting together when the bandits suddenly arrived. We ran into a house and hid. We heard screams and gunshots everywhere. When it stopped, we came out and found about 16 bodies, including some of my relatives,” he said.

The attack forced over 400 residents to flee to neighbouring Bagagadi and Radda villages, while several others remain missing.

Residents also said some victims were killed on their farms, with bodies later discovered in surrounding areas, raising fears that the death toll may rise.

  • U.S. Deports Fresh Group Of West Africans To Ghana

U.S. Deports Fresh Group Of West Africans To Ghana

The United States has expelled another group of West African nationals to Ghana, including at least one person who holds legal protections against deportation, a lawyer involved in one of the cases told AFP on Saturday.

The development raises fresh concerns about Washington’s use of third-country deportation arrangements to remove people who would ordinarily have been allowed to remain in the country under previous administrations.

The exact number of deportees in the latest batch was not disclosed, but Meredyth Yoon, a U.S.-based lawyer connected to one of the cases, said the group arrived in Ghana on Thursday.

The person whose case Yoon is associated with is a Guinean man who holds what is known as “withholding of removal,” a legal protection that, while weaker than asylum, has historically prevented a person’s deportation order from being executed, allowing them to live and work in the United States.

“They could all be deported back to their countries as soon as tomorrow,” Yoon warned, expressing fears that the group would be quickly forwarded from Ghana to their countries of origin.

The Trump administration has argued that it is only legally barred from sending people with such protections to their home countries and not to a third country, a position that rights groups and lawyers have fiercely contested in U.S. courts.

The latest flight comes after at least 42 West Africans arrived in Ghana under the third-country deportation arrangement last year, though Washington and Accra have not made the actual cumulative total public.

Ghana has previously forwarded deportees to neighbouring Togo without documents, including a bisexual Gambian man whose country criminalises same-sex relations, according to U.S. court documents, and previous deportees were held in secret at a military base outside Accra under armed guard.

President Donald Trump won the 2024 U.S. presidential election on promises of launching what he described as the largest deportation programme of criminals in American history.

Since taking office, he has slashed the country’s asylum and refugee programmes while aggressively pursuing third-country agreements with African nations to accelerate removals.
