Ugandan Opposition Leader Collapses During Treason Trial

Veteran Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye collapsed during a court session in Kampala on Wednesday while standing trial on treason charges.

A senior official of the People’s Front for Freedom, Besigye’s political party, confirmed the incident, saying the 70-year-old was taken away in an ambulance after collapsing.

Court proceedings were subsequently postponed as prison guards moved to assist the 70-year-old opposition figure.

Besigye has been in custody since November 2024 after he was arrested in Kenya and returned to Uganda. He is facing treason charges, which he and his supporters have described as politically motivated.

The former presidential candidate has been a prominent critic of President Yoweri Museveni and has challenged him in several elections.

Besigye and his co-accused have denied the allegations. His repeated applications for bail have also been rejected.

His detention has attracted criticism from local and international rights groups, with concerns raised about his health and access to medical care.

Amnesty International said earlier this year that Besigye was seriously ill and required specialised medical attention outside detention conditions.

Officials from Uganda’s judiciary and prison authorities had not immediately commented on his condition or provided details about where he was taken.

“You tried to sleep with me” — Davrel, BBNaija Star, Phyna trade allegations

Reality TV star and former Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna, has hit back at content creator Davrel after he alleged that she repeatedly asked him to introduce her to his billionaire father and also attempted to sleep with him.

The exchange began after Phyna accused Davrel of refusing to pay a cameraman she introduced to him for a project.

According to Phyna, Davrel contacted her, claiming he needed a cameraman to shoot a thriller for music star Davido, prompting her to recommend her personal cameraman.

“I know Davrel. The other time, he said he wanted to shoot a thriller for Davido and needed a cameraman. I sent him my personal cameraman. Till today, he has refused to pay that boy his money. Then you come online and start talking anyhow,” she said.

Reacting in a video, Davrel denied the allegation and accused Phyna of being disrespectful, he also made further allegations.

“Phyna has been begging me to introduce her to my dad. She dey ask me to connect them,” he alleged.

Davrel further claimed that Phyna was upset because he rejected her alleged advances.

“God will punish you. Phyna, tell them the real reason you’re mad at me. Phyna has been trying to sleep with me but I am not interested. You’re too old. I have my wife. I don’t want, please,” he said.

Phyna, however, dismissed the allegations, describing them as false, before mocking the content creator’s appearance in her response.

“Davrel avoid me and if you want clout I’ll give you clout. Please go and bathe well and try and visit a dentist if there’s something they can do about your dripping mouth with spit. Please go to Turkey to fix your hairline too,” she said.

Neither party has publicly provided evidence to support the allegations exchanged in the videos.

Journey to financial freedom – Priscilla, a PalmPay Agent now owns a store

For many women, financial independence means the freedom to provide for their families and build a better future. Yet, this remains out of reach due to limited access to opportunities, business support, and secure payment solutions.

Like millions of women in Nigeria determined to be financially independent, Pricillia started with a single PalmPay POS terminal, and as an agent, every successful transaction provided a commission which brought her one step closer to achieving her dream.

Through consistency, discipline, and support from the payment platform, the hardworking citizen reinvested her earnings and eventually opened her own provision store.

“I started as just a PalmPay agent with one POS. The consistency of the platform gave me the confidence to expand. With the income I earned, I was able to open my own provision shop.” Priscilla said.

For Priscilla, PalmPay was more than a payment platform. Its secure payment infrastructure gave her the confidence to serve customers, build trust, and grow her income.

Today, Pricillia has joined the statistics of SMEs powering Nigeria’s economy and PalmPay continues to support her daily operations, helping her receive payments, as she works towards the next business milestone. The journey is a reminder that when women have access to secure financial tools and opportunities, they can build lasting economic independence.

Speaking on Pricillia’s journey, Femi Hanson, Head of Marketing, PalmPay said: “Providing a secure platform that users can trust, whether for everyday payments or high-value transactions, is central to our vision of advancing financial inclusion.

“Priscilla’s story reflects our commitment to supporting the ambitions of Nigerians by providing a platform they can rely on to grow their finances. After all, seamless banking begins with security, and every successful transaction reinforces the trust our users place in us.”

Priscilla stands among thousands of PalmPay agents nationwide who are helping to expand financial access across Nigeria while earning commissions to create sustainable sources of income for themselves.

Every payment tells a story. It begins with trust, the confidence that your money is secure and that financial services are accessible. And when that opportunity reaches women, it creates ripple effects that transform families, strengthen communities, and drive economic growth.
