Nigerian Navy at 70: Army, Air Force, Police, NDLEA, Customs, FRSC others unite with Navy for NNS Delta sports fiesta

The Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA on Tuesday organised an inter-agency football and volleyball fiesta as part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.

The sporting event, held at the NNS DELTA Football Field in Warri, Delta State, featured a mixed volleyball match involving personnel from NNS DELTA as well as those of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other sister security agencies.

The celebration also featured a novelty football match involving male and female children from host communities.

All participants at the event were presented with sports kits, plaques and other awards.

Speaking during the event, the Commander of NNS DELTA, Commodore Shehu M. Tasiu, said the sports fiesta was designed not only to celebrate the Navy’s 70 years of service but also to promote healthy living, teamwork and unity among security agencies and members of the community.

According to him, sports remain an important tool for physical fitness, mental well-being and character development, particularly among children.

“Sport is more than competition. It is medicine for the body and strength for the mind. Regular exercise builds healthy hearts, sharp minds and disciplined habits. For our children, sport teaches coordination, resilience and confidence,” he said.

The Commander NNS DELTA further stressed that the values of teamwork, cooperation, communication and trust learned through sports mirror the principles that guide the Nigerian Navy in the discharge of its duties.

He explained that involving children in the anniversary celebration was a deliberate effort to inspire the next generation and strengthen ties between the Navy and host communities.

“The Navy of tomorrow will be built by the children of today. When they run on this field with our officers and ratings, they see us not just as uniformed personnel, but as mentors, neighbours and friends,” Tasiu stated.

He also encouraged Nigerians to embrace regular exercise as part of their daily routine, noting that physical activity helps prevent illnesses, reduce stress and improve overall well-being.

Also speaking, the Special Guest of Honour and representative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Engr. Ezekiel Atoke, commended the Nigerian Navy for promoting unity and healthy living through sports.

He described the initiative as a commendable way of celebrating the Navy’s 70 years of service to the nation, noting that sports remain one of the most effective platforms for fostering social cohesion and youth development.

“The Nigerian Navy deserves commendation for bringing together children, community members and personnel of various security agencies through sports. This event promotes unity, friendship and healthy living, which are essential for nation-building.

“Beyond the competition, it sends a strong message about the importance of teamwork, discipline and peaceful coexistence. The NDDC will continue to support initiatives that positively engage young people and strengthen community relations,” Atoke said.

Other participants from various agencies and football clubs equally praised the initiative, describing it as a platform for strengthening inter-agency collaboration and fostering cordial relationships among security personnel.

Speaking with journalists, Coach of Living Boot FC, Stanley Bobby, said the event provided a unique opportunity to celebrate the Nigerian Navy’s milestone while encouraging healthy competition among participants.

“This event is commendable because it brings together security agencies and the community through sports. Beyond competition, it promotes friendship, discipline and healthy living. The children have also gained valuable experience by participating in the anniversary celebration,” he said.

Also speaking, Coach Frank Okoro of Red Ichofe Warriors FC described sports as a vital tool for youth development and social integration.

“I am impressed by the level of organisation and the opportunity given to children to interact with security personnel in a friendly environment. Programmes like this help to build confidence and unity among young people,” he stated.

An officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), ASP Cyril Ibeah, who participated in the volleyball event, noted that the competition further strengthened collaboration among sister security agencies.

According to him, “Activities like this improve teamwork and mutual understanding, which are important in our collective efforts to serve the nation.”

Similarly, ACM Effiong Joseph of the Nigerian Air Force said the event provided an avenue for recreation, physical fitness and inter-agency bonding.

“It was exciting to celebrate the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary in such a unique and engaging way. The competition showcased the spirit of unity that exists among the various security agencies,” he said.

Lance Corporal Mercy Elawure, who also participated in the volleyball match, described the event as rewarding and enjoyable.

“It was wonderful to see personnel from different agencies competing together while promoting friendship and cooperation,” she said.

Some of the children who took part in the novelty football match also expressed excitement over the opportunity to participate in the anniversary activities.

One of the participants, who gave his name as Efe, said, “I am happy to play football with my friends today. I scored a goal and received a sports kit. This is one of the best days I have had, and I thank the Nigerian Navy for inviting us.”

Another participant, Festus, said the event had inspired her to take sports more seriously.

“I enjoyed the match and meeting officers from the Navy and other security agencies. It has encouraged me to stay active and participate more in sports,” she said at the end of the 1st day of the 2-day event.

Lagos court jails man 15 years for N26m Toyota Hilux fraud

A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a man, Abdulrahman Lawal Raji, to 15 years imprisonment for defrauding a buyer of N26 million under the guise of supplying a Toyota Hilux vehicle.

Justice Ismail Ijelu delivered the judgment on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after finding Raji guilty of obtaining money by false pretence.

A statement by EFCC said the convict was arraigned by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on November 9, 2023, on an amended two-count charge.

According to the anti-graft agency, Raji collected N26 million from a petitioner, Olaide Ibidapo, for the purchase of a 2022 Toyota Hilux but failed to deliver the vehicle or refund the money.

One of the charges against him read:

“ABDULRAHMAN LAWAL RAJI and ABDULRAHMAN LAWAL (at large), between 20th March, 2023 and 21 March, 2023 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to defraud, obtained a gross sum of N26,000,000 from Olaide Ibidapo by falsely representing it was the purchase price for a Toyota Hilux 2022 car, which representation you knew to be false”.

Raji pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

During the trial, prosecution counsel, Ebuka Okongwu, presented four witnesses and tendered several documents which were admitted as exhibits by the court.

The defence, however, called two witnesses in its case.

Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu held that the prosecution had successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently found the defendant guilty as charged.

The court sentenced Raji to 10 years imprisonment on count one and five years imprisonment on count two, without the option of a fine on either count.

The judge ordered that both sentences should run concurrently.

Justice Ijelu also directed the convict to restitute the sum of N26 million to the petitioner.

Raji’s conviction started from his failure to fulfil an agreement to supply a 2022 Toyota Hilux vehicle after receiving payment from the buyer. Investigations revealed that he neither delivered the vehicle nor returned the money paid for the transaction.

Transfer: Galatasaray told to sell Victor Osimhen

Former Turkish referee, Ahmed Çakar, has advised Galatasaray to sell their top striker, Victor Osimhen, if they receive an offer of 130 million Euros for his signature.

Çakar believes the Turkish Super Lig champion would make a profit because they bought the Nigerian international for 75 million Euros from Napoli.

Osimhen has been heavily linked with a move away from Galatasaray this summer.

The 27-year-old recently dismissed reports of him leaving Galatasaray this summer amid links from Chelsea, Man United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Speaking about Osimhen’s future on the Libero TV YouTube channel, as per Habersarikirmizi, Çakar said, “There is no football player in the world who cannot be sold. Osimhen cost Galatasaray around 75 million Euros.

“If they sell him for 90 or 100 million Euros, I would say, ‘You made a mistake.’ I would say ‘You’re fools if you’re offered 130 million Euros and don’t sell him.’ Because you make a profit, and you also get to use him for a year after acquiring his transfer rights. Then it’s fine.”

  • Alleged N2.8bn Fraud: Court Defers Ruling On Sirika Trial Bid

Alleged N2.8bn Fraud: Court Defers Ruling On Sirika Trial Bid

The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja has deferred its ruling on a motion seeking to discontinue the trial of former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika to the day of final judgement, in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

Justice S.C. Oriji made the order on Tuesday after hearing arguments from counsel on both sides, ruling that the issues raised in the motion were so closely tied to the determination of the charge itself that judicial prudence required they be addressed together at judgement.

“This motion is not challenging the validity of the charge. However, the issues and prayers in this application are inextricably tied or connected to the determination of the charge.

Therefore, in my view, judicial prudence dictates that it is better to deliver the ruling on the motion along with the judgement on the charge after the trial and I so direct,” the judge said.

The motion was brought by Sanusi Musa SAN, counsel to the third defendant Hamma Jalal Sule, who urged the court to stop the prosecution from presenting further evidence, expunge all evidence and exhibits already tendered and dismiss the charge entirely, arguing the case was filed on the basis of an incomplete investigation.

The prosecution team, led by Rotimi Jacobs SAN, countered the application by citing Section 379 Sub-section 2 of the ACJA 2015, which permits additional evidence and exhibits to be filed at any time before judgement is given, and cited several decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal in support of that position.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Sirika alongside his daughter Fatima Hadi Sirika and son-in-law Hamma Jalal Sule on an amended six-count charge bordering on contract fraud.

The alleged offences involve Al Buraq Global Investment Limited, a company linked to the former minister’s daughter, to the tune of N2,825,032,220.97.

The case suffered a significant setback for the prosecution in April, when Justice Oriji rejected key exhibits tendered by the EFCC, including the extra-judicial statements made by Fatima Sirika and her husband at the Commission’s office.

The judge ruled the statements inadmissible, holding that the EFCC had failed to comply with Section 15(4) of the ACJA 2015 when obtaining them.

It was immediately following that ruling that the defence filed the present motion seeking to discontinue the trial entirely.

Sirika, who served as Minister of Aviation under former President Muhammadu Buhari between 2015 and 2023, has consistently denied all wrongdoing.

He was arraigned alongside his co-defendants in May 2024 and has described the prosecution as politically motivated.

In April this year, he formally declared his intention to contest the Katsina North Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, signalling his intention to return to frontline politics despite the ongoing trial.

The matter was adjourned to June 10 for continuation of trial.

Nasarawa: Poor waste management fuels pollution, disease outbreaks — NASWAMSA, DPI

The Director-General of the Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, NASWAMSA, Hon. Dr. Mohammed Bello Isa, has highlighted the dangers inherent in indiscriminate dumping of wastes across the country.

Isa, represented by Director of Waste Management, NASWAMSA, stated this at the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP backed Nasarawa State Community Cleanup and Environmental Sensitization Exercise, organised by Digital Peers International on Tuesday.

He noted that environmental cleanliness is directly linked to the health, safety, and economic wellbeing of communities, adding that poor waste disposal practices contribute significantly to environmental degradation, flooding, air and water pollution, vector-borne diseases, and other public health challenges.

According to him, “Every improperly disposed waste item has the potential to become a source of disease, environmental nuisance, and economic loss.

“The challenge of waste management cannot be left to government alone. Environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility. Every household, business owner, institution, market association, community leader, and citizen has a role to play.”

He said that citizens must embrace the principles of waste reduction, proper waste segregation, recycling and resource recovery, responsible disposal practices, and community participation in sanitation activities.

“Let us remember that a clean environment is not only a reflection of responsible citizenship but also an investment in the health and future of generations yet unborn,” he added.”

Speaking, a retired Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment and Chief Executive Officer, DPI, Dr. Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, said that environmental sustainability, responsible plastic use, cleaner communities, and youth-driven solutions to plastic pollution must be promoted within Nasarawa State and beyond.

The also harped on the need to build awareness, promote behavioral change, encourage innovation in plastic waste management, supporte green enterprises, and creation of sustainable opportunities for young people within the plastic value chain..
