Former French international, Christophe Dugarry has harshly criticized Arsenal following their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.

The North London team succumbed to PSG in a penalty shootout after a closely contested match that extended to the full duration. Kai Havertz initially put the Gunners ahead, but their lead was equalized in the second half when Ousmane Dembele converted a penalty awarded for a foul by Cristhian Mosquera.

Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes both failed to convert their penalties during the shootout, contributing to PSG’s 4-3 aggregate victory and allowing them to retain their European title. The former France international has criticized the Gunners for the tactics they employed in the final against the Ligue 1 champions.

In an interview with RMC Sport’s Rothen S’enflamme, Dugarry condemned Mikel Arteta’s team for their approach, stating (via GOAL):

“We witnessed clearances, a team that consistently attempted to waste time. It was utterly unbearable, intolerable, and what was almost disastrous for football and its admirers is that they nearly created the illusion that by doing so little, one could win the Champions League.”

He further criticized Arteta for adopting a defensive strategy in the final, asserting that this was not reflective of the traditional style of the Gunners.

“They’re a group of clowns, arriving with inflated egos, with Arteta proclaiming, ‘We’re going to defeat them’… I’m delighted Arsenal received the short end of the stick, and I hope that if they ever aspire to win it, they will begin to play proper football.

“This isn’t Arsenal! This club has a rich history, they’re the Gunners, there’s a legacy, a style of play. They cannot perform like that, it’s simply impossible.”

Despite the backlash, Mikel Arteta’s squad has enjoyed a successful season.

They ended their 22-year Premier League drought and reached the UCL final for only the second time in the club’s history.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two officers of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps, popularly known as So-Safe Corps, over the death of a man identified simply as Success, who reportedly died from injuries sustained after the officers allegedly tortured him.

The command’s public relations officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the development in a terse response to an enquiry 

Oluseyi disclosed that the officers had been taken into custody following the incident.

“I can confirm that we have the officers involved in custody,” he said.

The incident occurred following an altercation between Success and his mother on Saturday in the Oju-Ore area of Ogun State.

It was reported that Success’s mother informed some So-Safe officers about the matter, who subsequently took him into custody.

However, instead of handing him over to the police, the officers allegedly took him to an uncompleted building where he was severely assaulted.

The victim was said to have later died from injuries sustained during the alleged torture.

A source familiar with the incident alleged that the officers subjected Success to prolonged beating after taking him away from his family residence.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the So-Safe Corps said it was working closely with the police to ensure justice was served.

The spokesperson for the corps, Moruf Adekunle, condemned the actions of the officers, describing them as a violation of the organisation’s operational procedures.

According to him, the officers acted outside the mandate and standard operating procedures of the security outfit.

“The mother called us to intervene, and some of our ad hoc personnel responded. They were expected to report the matter to the appropriate authorities, but unfortunately, they took the law into their own hands.

“Immediately the incident came to our attention, we handed over the first suspect to the Nigerian Police Force and subsequently handed over the second officer for investigation and prosecution.

“The commandant does not condone any form of human rights abuse. We are working in synergy with the police to ensure justice is done,” Adekunle said.

He added that the state commander of the corps, Soji Ganzallo, had consistently warned personnel against human rights violations, unlawful detention and interference in matters beyond their jurisdiction.

The incident has again raised concerns over alleged torture and extrajudicial actions by some security operatives across the country.

In recent years, rights groups and civil society organisations have repeatedly called for greater accountability and stricter sanctions against security personnel found culpable of torture, unlawful detention and other forms of human rights abuses.

The police explained that investigations into the circumstances surrounding Success’s death were ongoing.

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration.

The address will form part of a series of official events lined up by the Federal Government to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, according to the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated on Tuesday to coordinate the nationwide programme.

Other activities lined up for the celebration included a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-oriented programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day Gala night.

Inaugurating the committee, the Federal Government paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of the June 12 struggle.

A statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s Media Aide, Yomi Odunuga, said the SGF, George Akume, noted that the Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by Nigerians who fought for democratic governance.

Akume described the June 12 anniversary as a significant moment to honour those who contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria,” he said.

The SGF paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993, struggle and particularly to the late MKO Abiola, whose sacrifice and commitment to democracy, he said, led to the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day.

Akume also said the celebration would provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase its achievements and reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals, institutional strengthening and national development.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would use the occasion to demonstrate progress made in consolidating democracy, strengthening institutions and implementing reforms despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

With only 10 days to the anniversary, Akume directed members of the committee to begin work immediately to ensure the successful execution of all approved activities.

He added that the celebration would be “modest but purposeful” in line with the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

Akume said the committee had been divided into sub-committees to handle various aspects of the celebration and directed all sub-committee secretaries to submit their budgets for approval.

He expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver a successful commemoration and urged stakeholders to work together to ensure that the celebration serves as a worthy tribute to Nigeria’s democratic heroes and a reaffirmation of the country’s commitment to democratic governance.

The committee is chaired by the SGF and comprises key ministers, security chiefs and senior government officials, including the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance and Foreign Affairs, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, among others.

Nigeria marks Democracy Day every June 12 to commemorate the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999 and to honour the legacy of the June 12, 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola.

Former presidential aide and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Babafemi Ojudu has slammed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, over the emergene of his loyalist as the candidate of the ruling party for the Rivers State governorship election.

DAILY POST recalls that Kingsley Chinda, the immediate past Minority Leader in the green chamber, won the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2023 election.

However, confusion trailed his emergence on Tuesday following the announcement of his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the APC weeks after the primary election.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced Chinda’s defection during plenary on Tuesday.

Reacting, Ojudu in a statement on his Facebook page on Wednesday, wondered how the “Minority Leader of one political party could secure the governorship ticket of the ruling party, and only afterwards, defects to that party. Welcome to Rivers State, a soon to be renamed Wike State”.

“Traditionally, political parties are expected to be built on loyalty, shared values, ideological commitments, and long-term participation.
