Ukraine war: Zelensky ready for direct negotiations with Putin

President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his readiness for one-on-one talks with President Vladimir Putin to work out a permanent ceasefire to end the Ukraine war.

Zelensky reiterated the commitment on Wednesday at a press conference alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the first NATO-Ukraine Council meeting.

“I’m ready for direct negotiations with Putin to end this war,” he said in Kyiv. “Rather than wait while everybody finishes all the conflicts in the world.”

Zelensky noted that ballistic missiles are Russia’s “last argument” in the war, confirming his country has been responding with the American-made Patriot systems.

The leader insists the recent strikes by Ukraine were justified, as they were carried out in response to the Russian attacks on its territory.

“If they continue using drones and missiles against us, we will be doing the same,” Zelensky vowed. “But we respond exclusively against oil refineries or justified military targets.”

The President, however, hinted that the greatest threat Ukraine currently faces is Russia’s capability to produce up to 120 ballistic missiles per month.

Rutte praised Ukraine for its resilience, saying the nation has become so successful that Putin was only able to organize the May 9 parade with an official presidential decree by Zelensky.

UCDA demolishes shanties in Umuahia, says they were hideouts for criminals

Umuahia Capital Development Authority, UCDA, has demolished unapproved shops, shanties, and other makeshift buildings in Isiama Afaraukwu, Umuahia North LGA of Abia State.

The General Manager of UCDA, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, said that some of the demolished structures allegedly served as hideouts for criminals and drug peddlers, prompting the state government to move against them.

He said that the owners of the demolished structures were properly served notices by the Abia State Government on March 17 and April 17, 2026, before bulldozers were deployed on Tuesday.

The UCDA General Manager stated that the exercise was carried out in line with its mandate and functions as provided in the Abia State Urban and Regional Planning Board and Town Planning Authorities Law, Cap 40, Volume 2, Laws of Abia State 2005, as amended.

Agomoh noted that the demolition exercise is not limited to Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku but will be extended across the state capital, saying that the State Government was determined to rid the capital of defacing structures.

He dismissed claims that people’s property was destroyed without notice and advised other owners of shanties to voluntarily remove them.

Meanwhile, Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, has denied reports that he was involved in the demolition of Afara residents’ property.

Emetu, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Cyril Eke Mba, said the allegations were falsehoods designed to cause tension among the public.

FG deploys eight gun trucks to boost fight against illegal mining

As part of efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, the Federal Government has procured and deployed eight operational gun trucks to intensify the crackdown on illegal mining across the country.

Babalawe Afolabi, Assistant Commandant of Corps and National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters Abuja, in a statement, said the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, noted that additional state-of-the-art technological equipment and armoured vehicles would be provided once budgetary provisions are secured.

Alake, who was accompanied by the representative of the Minister of Interior, Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (retd.), expressed satisfaction with the unit’s track record.

He revealed that within just two years of existence, the Mining Marshals have apprehended over 300 illegal miners, prosecuted more than 150 suspects, and secured numerous convictions involving both local and foreign nationals.

According to the minister, the Mining Marshals, a specialised unit carved out of the NSCDC, have significantly contributed to boosting Nigeria’s non-oil revenue, helping diversify the economy away from petroleum dependence.

Alake strongly condemned the attempts by illegal miners and their collaborators to frustrate ongoing national operations, describing them as “saboteurs” and “enemies of the state” who would be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, represented by Major General Abdulmalik Jibrin (retd.) of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), commended the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development for its support.

He emphasised that the collaboration has helped safeguard the nation’s mineral deposits and pledged the Interior Ministry’s full backing for future training, increased funding, and enhanced firepower.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, represented by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Technical Services, DCG Zakari Ibrahim Ningi, described the ministry’s intervention as revolutionary and unprecedented.

While describing illegal mining as a critical menace to national development, the Commandant General assured that the NSCDC would maintain its robust synergy with the ministry, promising that the newly acquired gun trucks would be deployed strictly for their intended purposes.
