The substantive Provost of the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, Professor Agwu Ekwe, on Tuesday took charge of the leadership of the college.

The college was engulfed in leadership crisis on Monday when two provosts emerged, which brought academic activities to a halt.

Both academic and non-academic staffers said the crisis was a result of non-compliance with Colleges of Agriculture rules on appointment of a Provost.

The situation, which caused tension and confusion in the college, forced the new Provost out of the institution.

Dr. ThankGod Nwaneri, Chairman of Joint Union Action of the institution said the two Provosts; Dr. Jonah Nwawuisi and Professor Agwu Ekwe gave him instructions which he abandoned because he was confused on the one to obey.

However, there was a twist on Tuesday when the substantive Provost took over the control of the college.

The entrance gate, which the academic and non-academic unions locked, was broken and the Provost entered the college and addressed staff and students of the school.

There was heavy presence of security agencies in the school when he took control of the college.

 

“The Acting Provost, Dr. Nwawuisi Jonah has handed over to the new Provost and he can’t say no to it because it is a federal government directive.

“The new Provost came in with soldiers, policemen, DSS officials.

“So, the Joint Union Action (JUA) allowed the security agencies to break the gate and the new Provost entered the college and addressed those he saw in the college”, a source said.

Ebonyi: Federal College of Agriculture Provost regains control after standoff with workers

Member of a local vigilante group, Hambali Sa’adu, has been killed following an ambush by suspected armed bandits at the Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi State.

The incident was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, in a statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on Sunday at about 1:30pm along the Bakin Layi axis of the reserve, when a joint patrol team comprising police officers from the Mai-Ari Outpost and members of a local vigilante group came under heavy gunfire from bandits who had laid an ambush.

During the attack, the deceased, a 27-year-old indigene of Mai-Ari Village in Maimadi Ward, sustained fatal gunshot wounds. He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor, and his remains were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The police said the security team regrouped after the initial assault and launched a counterattack against the assailants.

“In a show of courage, the joint security team pursued the fleeing bandits and engaged them in a fierce gun battle. The superior firepower and tactical response forced the bandits to retreat, with several escaping with suspected gunshot wounds,” the statement said.

The command added that four of the bandits were killed during the exchange of gunfire, while four other suspects were arrested and are currently in custody undergoing investigation.

Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commiserated with the family of the deceased and the Mai-Ari community, describing the late vigilante as a brave patriot who paid the ultimate price in defence of his people.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling banditry and other violent crimes, ordering intensified bush-combing operations around Yankari Game Reserve.

Former Big Brother Naija winner, Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has claimed that she is still single because Nigerian men are scared of confident and independent women.

Speaking during a recent livestream on Twitch, the reality star claimed that most Nigerian men prefer women they can control when choosing a life partner and avoid independent women.

Phyna explained that expressive women like her are the worse hits because most men judge them by their social media rhetoric and decide to avoid them even before meeting them.

The actress said she is, however, not bothered by the trend, stressing that she can’t change herself to fit into a man’s expectations.

“I am a ten over ten. The thing is just that men are scared of bold and confident women. There are someone women that by mere looking at them you know that you can’t control them. But our Nigerian men like women that they can control.

“They don’t want women who have says or are exposed. So, we that are very loud about how we are, even without they meeting us, they are already scared and forming assumptions. But I really don’t care,” she expressed.

The member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal constituency in the National Assembly, Obi Aguocha has said that he is losing a lot of things because of his continued demand for the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Aguocha also said that many Igbo leaders were avoiding talking about Nnamdi Kanu and other challenges facing the Igbo people in Nigeria.

He said that his consistent demand for the release of Kanu and many other people in that gap, has resulted in his being profiled in a negative perspective.

The Reps member, who said that he has the sole mandate of the IPOB leader to negotiate his release, said such approval spoke loud about the confidence Kanu has in him.

“I know what I have lost as a member of the House of Representatives for speaking up for Nnamdi Kanu and other constitutional issues, the positions I have taken.

“I know what I am losing now because they have marked me, ‘okay he is always on this side’ but I don’t regret it any moment,” Aguocha said.

He challenged Igbo leaders to form a united front to secure Kanu’s freedom the same way the Yoruba leaders successfully worked for Sunday Igboho’s release.

He, however, praised Governor Alex Otti for his initiative to mobilize South East Governors for the free Nnamdi Kanu drive.

Aguocha also told the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu that he cannot defeat Governor Alex Otti in 2027 election.

What began as a routine diaspora engagement by Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, in London on April 6 quickly turned into a moment of controversy after the governor told a participant to “shut up” during a question-and-answer session, triggering reactions among attendees and setting off a wider public debate.

The town hall, organised for the Anambra diaspora community, was designed to update indigenes on the administration’s achievements and ongoing projects, while also providing a platform for direct engagement with citizens abroad.

Flanked by his wife, daughter, and aides, Governor Soludo initially appeared relaxed as he addressed the audience. But the atmosphere shifted during the question-and-answer segment when an attendee identified as Engineer Chinedu Ogidi raised two issues that appeared to unsettle the engagement.

Ogidi first questioned the rationale behind establishing a local security outfit, ‘Udo Ga Chi’, without integrating a technology-driven system, arguing that such a framework could help speed up the tracking and arrest of criminals in the state.

He also sought clarity on the proposed 10,000 housing scheme reportedly announced by the state’s Commissioner for Housing, Paully Onyeka, in December 2025 for civil servants, stressing its potential impact on job creation.

The exchange took a tense turn when the governor pushed back on the housing reference.

“Don’t even waste our time, I didn’t say so. I do not know who…,” Soludo said, dismissing the claim, which Ogidi insisted had been reported by leading media outlets in Nigeria.

“I said, I saw it in Punch,” Ogidi responded, attempting to continue his point.

But the governor cut him short: “I am just telling you, what you said is fake news.”

The situation escalated further when Soludo instructed his aides to retrieve the microphone from Ogidi without fully addressing all his questions.

“Part of the discipline is that you have to play by the rules. We have finished the questions, I just obliged you. You do not have to give a lecture, you just ask your question and shut up!” the governor said.

What followed, according to attendees who spoke with THE WHISTLER, marked a visible shift in the tone of the meeting.

Eyewitness Account
After a brief cultural display interlude, the programme appeared to proceed to its next segment, according to a YouTube livestream of the event in circulation.

However, several attendees later claimed that tensions inside the hall escalated, leading to an altercation.
A participant and activist, Dr Chindo A.A., posted a video on Facebook alleging that he was manhandled and escorted out of the venue by security aides after he demanded that the governor apologise to Ogidi for his remarks.

Another attendee, Bernard Odimma, a UK-based participant, corroborated aspects of that account in an interview with THE WHISTLER, describing what he witnessed as deeply troubling.

He said the governor’s conduct reflected what he called a “serious character deficit that shows up all the time,” and described the remarks directed at Ogidi as “humiliating.”

“I must say that what I noticed during the question-and-answer session was that many of those asking questions appeared to have been preselected, as they asked largely favourable questions.

“It continued that way until this gentleman, who was sitting beside me, asked what I consider very reasonable questions. From that moment, it was clear the governor was not pleased.

“Then suddenly, the governor said, ‘Let me stop you there. You are wasting our time. Can you just shut up and sit down?’ That was arrogant, rude, and uncalled for,” he said.

Odimma further alleged that some aides of the governor made additional derogatory remarks towards Ogidi, which he said provoked reactions from other attendees.

He added that tensions heightened when Dr Chindo demanded an apology from the governor, an action he claimed led to the activist being forcibly removed.

“I think whoever manages Soludo needs to tell him the truth. He is very arrogant. He also needs to learn how to engage with people, especially in advanced countries like the UK.

“I would advise him to think carefully before hosting another town hall meeting in Europe or America, as it may be difficult to manage ‘the bad guys’ in such settings,” he said.

Government Response
In the days following the event, the incident has continued to generate reactions across media platforms, drawing both criticism and defence from supporters and opponents of the administration.

The Anambra State Government, in a statement obtained by THE WHISTLER, responded by focusing on Dr Chindo, whose video of the incident has gained traction online.

The government described him as one who “parades a platform called ‘Hungry and Angry Analytical’ and proceeds to offer analyses that are neither enlightening nor accurate, but merely ‘hungry and angry’ ranting.”

It accused him of making a “cottage industry out of confrontational attacks” on the governor.

“His latest salvo, targeting the Governor’s recent visit to London for a diaspora civic town hall meeting, is perhaps his most hollow and irresponsible yet. It is not an innocuous critique. It is political mischief dressed up as civic concern,” the statement read.

The government maintained that citizen engagement remains central to Soludo’s governing philosophy, describing such interactions as a key component of its outreach across the United Kingdom, the United States, Abuja, and Lagos.

“These interactions, however quiet and unglamorous, are among the surest foundations of transparent governance. Ultimately, Ndi Anambra, at home and abroad, know the difference between a leader who shows up and a commentator who always rants,” the statement added.

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has affirmed his readiness to partner with the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers to boost real estate development and economic growth in the state.

Otti made this known on Tuesday, at Government House, Umuahia, while hosting the leadership of the institution, led by its President and Chairman of the Council, ESV. Chief Victor Alonge, who are in the state for their 2026 annual conference.

Speaking at the event, the governor, noted that his administration aligns itself with individuals and organisations that share its vision for development.

“We see ourselves as partners with institutions and individuals who share our vision for a better society.

“We have worked closely with your members in Abia, and we intend to strengthen that relationship,” Otti said.

He stated that the ongoing reforms and projects within the real estate sector would require the involvement of estate surveyors and valuers.

“There are ongoing developments in the real estate sector that will require your expertise.

“This presents an opportunity for us to deepen our relationship and work more closely together,” he said.

The Governor, commended the institution for choosing Abia as host for its annual conference and general meeting, assuring members of a conducive environment.

He disclosed his plans to establish a five-star hotel in Umuahia to improve accommodation for visitors and organisations hosting events in the state.

The President and Chairman of Council, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Dr. Victor Alonge, said the institution was in Abia for its 2026 annual conference, noting that the state is hosting the event for the first time.

“This is the first time the state is hosting the annual conference and we are pleased it is happening under Govt. Otti’s leadership,” he stated.

He commended the governor, for his financial and logistical support, and also his amiable working relationship with members of the profession in the state.

Alonge noted that members of the institution have contributed to the state’s development in areas such as land administration, asset management, housing, and project development.

He praised the governor’s policies, noting that they have enhanced the states economy.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, Commissioners for Housing, Lands and Survey, Agriculture, and other top government officials.
