UCL: Sporting’s Braganca names extraordinary Arsenal star

The vice-captain of Sporting CP, Daniel Braganca, has praised Arsenal goalkeeper, David Raya for his amazing performance after the Portuguese side were eliminated from the Champions League.

Arsenal came into the second match already leading 1-0 from the first game in Lisbon last week and made sure they moved on to the Champions League semi-finals by drawing 0-0 at the Emirates Stadium, on Wednesday night.

Raya received UEFA’s Player of the Match award because of his excellent performance in the first game.

His impressive saves stopped Sporting from scoring.

On Wednesday evening during the return match, the Spain player encountered just one shot on target from Sporting, but Braganca said the goalkeeper was a key reason why Arsenal progressed.

He told Sport TV, “Being eliminated for what we did hurts.

“It left a bitter taste after the game because we could have scored and brought the match back to a draw.

“They also had chances, but Arsenal has an extraordinary goalkeeper who makes it harder for the other team to score.

Arsenal is now focusing on the Premier League, where they need to make sure they do not lose the title.
They have an important game against Manchester City coming up on Sunday.

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, and former Governor of Kano State, Kabiru Gaya, says the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, is scared of the ADC.

Waya said this on Wednesday while fielding questions in an interview on Arise Television monitored by DAILY POST.

He said the ruling party is working against the ADC just the same way it has crashed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and other political parties.

The ex-Kano governor also charged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be honest, sincere and able to work with every party, stressing that it has be a neutral ground rather than be in the interests of one party.

“I know the major party is working hard against us. They were not worried at all before, because they have crashed the PDP and other parties. But they didn’t know that ADC was coming up.

“The members of the ADC are totally committed to making sure the party becomes successful. We are doing our best, and we have gone through so many hurdles. We’ve crossed those hurdles, and we believe some of us are old politicians,” he said.

ASUU-AFUSTA chapter threatens strike in Kebbi

The Academic Staff Union of Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero (ASUU-AFUSTA), has issued a fresh set of demands to the Kebbi State Government, warning of a possible strike action if urgent steps are not taken to address their longstanding grievances.

The union’s chairman, Dr. Musa Isah Fakai, made the position known in a statement. He expressed the union’s growing frustration over what he described as persistent neglect of staff welfare and unresolved labour issues at the institution.

Fakai said the demands were part of ongoing efforts by the union to draw attention to what he termed “labour-unfriendly” conditions at the university, noting that similar concerns had been raised repeatedly through press briefings, official statements and other engagements without meaningful response from relevant authorities.

According to him, despite continuous advocacy, key stakeholders including the Ministry for Higher Education, the university management and the Governing Council have failed to adequately address the challenges confronting academic staff.

“The problems remain numerous, and the situation remains critically unaddressed by the relevant stakeholders,” he said, adding that the union had expected better responsiveness from the state government.

Among the demands listed by the union are the non-implementation of the approved remuneration package for university lecturers, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) dating back to 2014, and the backlog of unpaid promotion arrears. The union also decried the failure to implement annual salary increments for its members.

Fakai warned that failure by the government to meet these demands could lead to industrial action, stressing that the union would not hesitate to take necessary steps to protect the welfare of its members.
