White House Set To Host Historic UFC Combat

Combat sports will be brought to a standstill when two highly rated popular figures in the Lightweight division Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira and Ilia Topuria are set to go head to head on Monday at the White House lawn in what will be a historic UFC fight.

The UFC Freedom 250 card will be the first ever sporting spectacle hosted at the White House, while it will also mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Topuria who is coming into the match as an unbeaten double weight class champion, is known as one of the most feared fighters in the world having gotten the better of names such as Paddy Pimblett, Dustin Poirier and Tony Ferguson.

Topuria, known as ‘El Matador’, recorded high-profile knockout wins over Charles Oliveira, Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski in his last three fights amid title success in both the Featherweight and Lightweight classes.

In the co-main event, Pereira is aiming to become the first UFC fighter to claim belts in three weight divisions when he takes on Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title.

As a former middleweight and light heavyweight champion, Pereira (13-3-0) powered his way to five knockout victories in his last six fights. Gane (13-2-0, 1NC) is unbeaten in his last two fights, while his last fight with heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall at UFC321 was rendered a no contest owing to an eye poke in the first round.

With legendary status in view, Poatan expressed that he is already focused on fights beyond UFC Freedom 250, given that he could well be approaching the latter stage of his career.

The main card will also feature the colourful Sean O’Malley, who will once again hope to become a top contender in the bantamweight division when he takes on Aiemann Zahabi before the co-main event.

In a separate Heavyweight clash, fan favourite Derrick Lewis will face the undefeated Josh Hokit, who saw off Denzel Freeman and Curtis Blaydes in his last two fights. Much like that of O’Malley and Lewis, Hokit is known for his outspoken demeanour as a favourite to US President Donald Trump.

‘It was not overloaded’ — Nigerian Railway Corporation speaks on Warri-Itakpe train accident

The Director-General of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Kayode Opeifa, has said the train involved in the Warri-Itakpe accident was not overloaded.

Opeifa made the clarification on Wednesday while fielding questions on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’.

He was reacting to the incident which occurred on Monday. Five persons died in the accident.

“I wouldn’t want to go into anything now, even if I have some measurements yesterday. We do discussions with people on board, we heard some people say they felt some shaking or whatever.

“One thing I know is that the train was not overloaded. Personally from Sunday after Salah, we’ve been having issues with such, sometimes over 200 people will come to the train stations and we will not be able to pick them, because there’s not enough space to pick everybody.

“That corridor is one that we have been paying attention to in recent time in terms of patronage, and the patronage is huge. People come as far as from Abuja, and they go as far as Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta and Edo states,” he said.

Iran strikes US bases in Jordan, Bahrain

Iran on Wednesday attacked American bases in Jordan and Bahrain, warning its Gulf neighbours that they had a responsibility to stop the United States and Israel from using their territory to strike the Islamic Republic.

DAILY POST reports that the renewed attacks came after the US carried out strikes on Iran in response to the downing of an American helicopter, straining a ceasefire that took effect in April.

The exchange is said to have drawn international calls for restraint on the eve of the World Cup, which the US is co-hosting and Iran is participating in.

It also cast doubt on US President Donald Trump’s claim that negotiations on an enduring settlement to end the Middle East war were in their final throes.

DAILY POST reports that the crisis, which started late February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran, threw the region into chaos and rattled global markets before the shaky truce began.

In Bahrain, several loud explosions were said to be heard, as Iran’s Guards said they had struck a US base there.

Iranian forces also fired long-range missiles at US targets in Jordan, the Revolutionary Guards said on Wednesday.

Jordan’s military said it shot down five missiles, with no casualties or material damage, while Bahrain said it intercepted and destroyed a number of Iranian aerial attacks.

After weeks of blackout, relief power returns to Bida communities

Residents of several communities in Bida Local Government Area of Niger State have expressed relief following the gradual restoration of electricity supply after weeks of outage that disrupted economic and social activities.

The affected communities, including Darachita, Bangaie, Low Cost, Kobo Area, Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Quarters, Polytechnic Layout and Cabs Layout, had endured prolonged darkness before repair works commenced on the Barrack Feeders network.

The restoration followed the arrival of critical materials, including poles and cables, supplied by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), enabling technicians to begin repairs and reconnection of affected lines.

Residents who spoke on the development described the return of electricity as a welcome relief, noting that the outage had affected businesses, household activities and public services.

Many attributed the breakthrough to sustained engagements between the Niger State Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy and AEDC, which ensured the prompt delivery of repair materials to Bida.

Community leaders commended the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Suleiman Umar, whom they said maintained pressure on relevant authorities and monitored efforts aimed at restoring supply to the affected areas.

The communities also acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders who facilitated coordination between the state government and AEDC, leading to the ongoing intervention.

According to residents, the development reflects ongoing efforts by the administration of Niger state Governor Umar Mohammed Bago to improve infrastructure and public service delivery across the state.

Speaking on the development, Umar assured residents that the state government would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to improve electricity supply and address challenges affecting communities across Niger State.

For many residents, the sight of repair teams working across their neighbourhoods has rekindled hopes of a stable power supply and improved living conditions.

BBNaija Reunion: Joanna recounts alleged ‘one-night stand’ with Jason

Former Big Brother Naija Season 10 housemate Joanna has debunked her colleague Jason Jae’s claim of having a “one-night stand” with her in Biggie’s house.

DAILY POST recalls that Joanna and Jason had an intimate moment the night before her eviction, but the camera shifted, leaving viewers obvious of what transpired between them.

Jason Jae claimed in a post-show interview that the incident was a “one-night stand.”

However, speaking in the second episode of the reunion aired on Tuesday night, Joanna debunked the claims, saying nothing intimate happened between them.

She said she noticed Jason was “hard as a rock” and tried to cover him up but he went out and insinuated that they had a one-night stand.

“The very first interview Jason Jae had, he claimed that the incident was a ‘one-night thing’. I was shocked like, ‘Are you a baby?’

“I was sleeping when he came to my bed. I was very emotional because it was the night Thelma got evicted. I woke up to see him in my bed. He was hard as rock. I noticed it, and I tried to cover him up. Only for him to go out and say we had a one-night stand,” Joanna lamented.

Jason later apologised to Joanna for insinuating that he had a one-night stand with her, but maintained that he was never interested in her romantically, contrary to her claim that he wanted her as a rebound from Dede’s rejection, but she refused.
