Former Anambra governor, Peter Obi, and ex-governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Kwankwaso, alongside Anambra Central senator, Victor Umeh, are currently at the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, office in Abuja.

 

DAILY POST gathered that the politicians are expected to officially declare their decision to join the party.

This comes hours after Obi officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing the lingering crisis in the party.

Although Kwankwaso has yet to formally announce his resignation from the ADC, reports suggest he is aligned with Obi as both men move closer to securing the Obi-Kwankwaso ‘OK’ ticket.

The Rebuild lmo movement (RIM), has dismissed speculations in some quarters alleging that former governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and is set to join another political party.

The group said the claim did not originate from Ihedioha, stressing that neither the leadership of the Rebuild Imo Movement nor the ADC has issued any statement concerning the report.

According to the group, decisions of such nature are not made in secrecy or communicated through informal platforms – they are conveyed through clear and verified channels.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Director General of Rebuild lmo movement, Dr. Vin Udokwu, and made available to journalists in Owerri.

“This report is deliberately designed to mislead the public and create confusion among our members and supporters.

“Members of the public and party faithful are advised to disregard this misinformation.”

The Nigerian Police Force has provided an update on the killing of a suspect by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.

DAILY POST reported that on 26th April 2026 in Effurun, Delta State, a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi received a parcel from a friend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, delivered to him by a driver.

After collection, he proceeded to a motor park to waybill the parcel to Sapele, with the name, address, and phone number of the intended receiver written on it.

The parcel was searched and found to contain a fabricated Beretta pistol and four rounds of 9mm live ammunition.

Those who witnessed the incident effected a citizens’ arrest and subsequently contacted the police.

ASP Nuhu Usman and members of his team responded and arrived at the scene. The suspect was formally handed over to Usman as team lead.

At that point, rather than follow established police rules of engagement and standard operational procedures, ASP Usman shot and killed the unarmed, already apprehended suspect.

The remains of Mene Ogidi has since been deposited at the mortuary while the police awaits a formal autopsy by a certified pathologist, which findings will form part of the evidence to support prosecution in this case.

Addressing the press on Sunday, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed that the public be kept fully informed as the matter progresses.

Placid, who paraded the suspects at the Force Headquarters on Sunday, said following the incident, the IGP ordered an immediate and thorough investigation conducted by the Police Monitoring Unit.

He said the investigation established that the actions of ASP Nuhu Usman and members of his team constituted professional misconduct, abuse of office, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace, culminating in the unlawful killing of Mene Ogidi.

The Force spokesman insisted that no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action.

“The case file has been formally forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and prosecution. The Force will cooperate fully with the AGF’s office to ensure that this matter is prosecuted to its logical conclusion before a court of competent jurisdiction,” the Force Public Relations Officer said.

He disclosed that the driver who delivered the parcel from Yenagoa, as well as two members of the vigilante group involved remain at large, adding that tactical teams have been deployed and coordinated investigative measures are ongoing to ensure their arrest and prosecution.

Placid added, “The Nigeria Police Force reassures Nigerians, particularly the family of Mr. Mene Ogidi, that justice will be served in this matter. The Force does not shield officers who violate the law. No rank, no position, and no circumstance will be permitted to place any officer above accountability.

“This case is being handled with the full weight of transparency and institutional integrity. The Nigeria Police Force is aware that the eyes of Nigerians and the international community are on this matter, and we are resolved that our actions will reflect the highest standards of justice, accountability, and respect for human rights.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and assure them that the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on all those found culpable.

“Members of the public are encouraged to remain calm, continue to cooperate with law enforcement, and trust that this process will be seen through to the end.”

Efurun shooting: Nigerian Police parades dismissed officers, assures justice

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party Peter Obi and former Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso L have arrived at the residence of the National Leader of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Seriake Dickson in their bid to join the party.

The duo arrived at exactly 5:14 accompanied by associates and supporters who began to sing their ‘Ok’ song taken from Obi/Kwankwaso Movement in their 2027 presidential aspirations.

Obi had on Sunday confirmed he was leaving the African Democratic Congress blaming external influence for the crisis in the party.

In a personally signed statement on Sunday, Obi said his decision was driven not by personal grievances against party leaders but by a growing pattern of division, suspicion, and systemic disruption that has made it difficult to pursue genuine nation-building.

“Let me state clearly: my decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected Chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me,” Obi said. “I will continue to respect them.”

The former Anambra State governor, however, warned that the same forces he blamed for destabilising the Labour Party appear to be resurfacing within the ADC.

“However, the same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC, with endless court cases, internal battles, suspicion, and division,” he stated.

Obi described Nigeria’s broader political climate as increasingly hostile to sincerity and reform-minded leadership, lamenting that “intimidation, insecurity, endless scrutiny, and discouragement have become normal.”

“We now live in an environment that has become increasingly toxic, where the very system that should protect and create opportunities for decent living often works against the people,” he added.

Reflecting on his personal experience within political structures, Obi suggested that even allies sometimes contribute to the pressures reformers face.

“More painful is when some of those you associate with, believing you would find understanding and solidarity among them, become part of the pressure you face,” he said. “Some who publicly identify with you privately distance themselves or join in unfair criticism.”

He further decried what he sees as a distortion of values in Nigeria’s political culture.

“We live in a society where humility is mistaken for weakness, respect is seen as a lack of courage, and compassion is treated as foolishness,” Obi noted.

“A system where treating people equally is questioned simply because you refuse to worship status, tribe, class, or power.”

Despite his exit, Obi insisted his political ambition is not driven by a quest for power but by a desire to see meaningful change in the country.

“Let me assure all that I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society that can console a mother whose child has been kidnapped or killed,” he said.

“I am desperate to see a Nigeria where people will not live in IDP camps but in their homes. I am desperate for a country where Nigerian citizens do not go to bed hungry.”

Obi also spoke about the personal toll of his political journey, describing “silent pains,” “emotional burdens,” and “quiet battles” faced while trying to serve sincerely under difficult conditions.

“There are moments I ask God in prayer: Why is doing the right thing often misconstrued as wrongdoing in our country?” he said. “Why is integrity not valued?”

He concluded by reaffirming his belief in Nigeria’s potential despite the challenges.
“Yet, despite everything, I remain resolute. I firmly believe that Nigeria can still become a country with competent leadership based on justice, compassion, and equal opportunity for all,” Obi said. “A new Nigeria is possible.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has described as fake reports of a change in its leadership.

The forum said, “The attention of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has been drawn to an announcement of a change in the leadership of the organisation. The news is totally false, and the purported action from which the announcement derived is unconstitutional.”

ACF National Publicity Secretary Prof. Muhammad-Baba, in a statement made available to DAILY POST, said, “Consequently, Mr Mike Mamman Mike Osuman, LLM, SAN, FCIArb, OFR, Chairman of the ACF, has authorised that this disclaimer be issued to disabuse the minds of members of the ACF, the press, and the public in general, but especially the teeming masses of Arewa who have been suffering untold existential socioeconomic hardships.”

He stated that the leadership of the forum had neither authorised, been aware of, nor communicated any purported change, adding that the announcement should be treated as null, void, and of no effect whatsoever.

For the avoidance of doubt, Muhammad-Baba clarified that approval of leaders of the forum is vested in its General Assembly, which has not yet been convened to fill any vacancies.

The statement stated, “Section 8(6) of the ACF Constitution empowers the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Forum to give general advice and direction on matters relating to the aims and objectives. Any other role outside the provision in this Section is unknown to the Constitution of the ACF. Thus, the BOT has no authority to order any leadership change.”

The forum said the power to establish operational committees is vested only in the NEC, under Section 14 of the ACF Constitution, adding that the purported constitution review committee is unconstitutional.

“The stated Leadership Selection Committee is not known to the Constitution and exists at the behest of NEC in the exercise of its powers under item (o) of Section 14 (1). The Leadership Selection Committee is, per se, only a creation of NEC as an ad hoc body for the purpose of vetting and making recommendations to NEC for consideration and transmission to the General Assembly for approval,” the statement explained.

The ACF National Publicity Secretary stated that the last Leadership Selection Committee completed its role in 2023 and has since been dissolved, adding that it is yet to be reconstituted.

The statement said, “NEC is already in the process of reconstituting the Selection Committee. In the event, any action, assignment, function or announcement(s) by person(s) claiming to exercise such putative functional power is, ipso facto, irregular, unconstitutional and will certainly remain unrecognised.”

It further explained that, by the provisions of Sections 13 and 14 of the ACF Constitution, only the National Publicity Secretary or his/her deputies are empowered to publicise and project the image of the forum, adding that statements from unauthorised persons should be disregarded.

It emphasised, “Mallam Murtala Aliyu remains in office as secretary general until a successor emerges in accordance with due process.”

The statement noted that it was regrettable that the forum had to issue clarification that may suggest a leadership crisis, stressing that no such crisis exists. It alleged awareness of clandestine efforts to destabilise the organisation.

The chairman assured members and supporters that the current leadership would protect the integrity of the forum and resist any attempt to derail its objectives.

The statement further implored members to “remain calm and law-abiding and await further communication from the leadership.”

ACF denies leadership change claims

Controversial musician, Portable, has claimed that Carter Efe’s victory in the celebrity boxing bout on Friday was scripted by organisers to evade payment of N23 billion to people who placed bets on his winning.

Portable made the claim after being mocked by many celebrities on social media.

DAILY POST reports that Carter Efe, a streamer, defeated Portable in a celebrity boxing match that was held in Lagos on Friday to win a N50 million cash prize.

Carter was crowned the winner of the match after the boxing judges scored him 30 and Portable 27.

Following how Portable was beaten, many Nigerian celebrities mocked the singer over his week-long verbal threats to defeat Carter.

However, speaking amid the ongoing mockery, the singer in an Instagram video on Sunday afternoon stated that the organizers crowned Carter Efe to avoid making a N23 billion betting payment to beneficiary.

“Na zazu, anywhere I follow is where una go follow. I’m the king while you guys are the chiefs. Everybody go dey follow my way. You guys don’t have a different pattern, different content, different music and lifestyle. Aside from being a celebrity or a musician, can’t you invent something new?

“I make Nigeria boxing big by originating celebrity fights. All of you mocking me can’t kill me. So, you guys don’t love me. To those mocking me, for your information, I have already been paid N40 million before the match, we are only fighting for the remaining N10 million.

“My fans, I was paid N40 million before the fight and was also paid N1 million each per post to promote the match five times, that is N5 million and N45, million in total. Carter Efe was throwing fowl blow on me, the referee was not fair to me. Even if I win the match, na 17 million in dollars be the money wey everybody wey do betting for my victory go collect. That’s 23 billion in naira, who go pay am, can organisers pay?

“Carter Efe’s victory was intentional. How many people bet on Carter? Most of the people bet on me. They believe in me and I believe in myself and in God. Na me be first musician wey bring boxing come Nigeria.”

Celebrity boxing: Carter Efe’s victory scripted by organisers to evade N23bn betting payment – Portable

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa star, Darren Bent, has identified Myles Lewis-Skelly as the player Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will drop from his starting XI to face Atletico Madrid in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg fixture at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking on Premier League Live, Bent said Martin Zubimendi should take Lewis-Skelly’s place in the starting XI to take on Atletico Madrid.

This comes after Arteta decided to start Lewis-Skelly over Zubimendi against Fulham in a Premier League encounter on Saturday.

“Zubimendi will probably come back in (Arsenal’s starting XI against Atletico ahead of Lewis-Skelly) because he is the more senior player,” Bent said.

“But I think the manager will be looking at Lewis-Skelly’s performance (against Fulham), thinking, do you know, what if a game’s going on against Atletico and it’s not quite working, he will have no doubts whatsoever.”

Legendary Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was taken to hospital after falling unwell at Old Trafford.

The incident happened before Sunday’s Premier League clash between the Red Devils and Liverpool.

The BBC reports that it was a precautionary move and not an emergency situation.

However, Ferguson was driven from the stadium in an ambulance.

United officials are optimistic Ferguson will recover soon enough to return home.

Michael Carrick’s men are looking to pick up at least a point, that will see them qualify for next season’s Champions League.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, and the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, have urged the Federal Government to ensure more press freedom and adequate protection of journalists.

The groups made the call at a joint news conference in Ikeja, Lagos, to mark the World Press Freedom Day celebrated annually on May 3.

The joint news conference was addressed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Mr Kolawole Oluwadare, and NGE Secretary, Mr Onuoha Ukeh, who was represented by Mr Gabriel Akinadewo.

The conference was themed ‘Role of the Media in Promoting People’s Rights, Accountability and Access to Justice in the Context of Growing Insecurity in Nigeria’.

SERAP and NGE emphasised that protecting journalists and safeguarding information integrity were central drivers of peace, security and democratic stability.

According to the groups, any credible peace promotion or security strategy in Nigeria must integrate support for free, independent and pluralistic media, alongside humanitarian, institutional and economic responses.

The groups expressed concerns about the scale and persistence of killings, abductions, sexual violence, forced displacement and destruction of property in some parts of Nigeria, including Benue, Borno, Kwara, Plateau and Sokoto states.

They said that thousands had reportedly been killed and millions displaced, with rural communities repeatedly targeted and women and children bearing the brunt of the violence.

They groups urged the federal and state governments to prevent foreseeable harm, protect communities, investigate rights violations, prosecute perpetrators and their sponsors and ensure access to justice for victims.

They added that the violations constituted breaches of the country’s obligations under the constitution, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

“The humanitarian consequences remain severe; communities destroyed, livelihoods lost and victims left without effective remedies,” they said.

They noted that Nigerian authorities had obligations to protect journalists and end insecurity, urging the authorities to exercise due diligence in preventing and addressing violations.

The SERAP and NGE said the UNESCO theme for 2026 World Press Freedom – “Shaping a Future of Peace” – showed that a free and independent media was central to peace and development.

They said that the erosion of independent journalism and civic information ecosystems directly contributed to governance breakdown, adding that attacks on journalists fueled corruption, weakened accountability and spread misinformation.

The groups recalled that Sections 22 and 39 of the Nigerian Constitution mandated media accountability and guaranteed freedom of expression.

They called on the authorities to protect civic space, promote ethical reporting and recognise killings and abductions as grave human rights violations.

They also urged prompt and independent investigations, prosecution of perpetrators and effective remedies for victims, including compensation and rehabilitation.

The groups called for more transparency in security operations, creation of public reporting systems and invitations to UN and African human rights rapporteurs for fact-finding missions.

They urged the National Assembly to convene a public hearing on insecurity and attacks on journalists.

Press Freedom Day: Attacks on journalists weakening accountability – SERAP, NGE

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, are currently holding a closed-door meeting at the Benue State Government House.

The meeting follows President Bola Tinubu’s directive for both leaders to urgently resolve their differences without further delay.

Initially scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026, the stakeholders’ meeting was rescheduled and is now taking place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Benue State.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to address and resolve the lingering internal crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Those expected at the meeting include 10 elders and stakeholders from Akume’s camp, 10 elders and stakeholders from Governor Alia’s camp, members of the Benue State House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly from Benue State, as well as Federal Government appointees from the state.
