2027: Withdraw from ADC presidential primaries – Ibrahim Abdulkarim tells Atiku

Ibrahim Abdulkarim, a political associate of fomer Anambra Governor, Peter Obi, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the presidential race ahead of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, primary, suggesting it would preserve his legacy and make way for a new political direction.

Speaking on Trust TV on Friday, Abdulkarim argued that Atiku’s long political career should be honoured with a dignified exit rather than another contest.

“Atiku will be 80 years old next year. We don’t want to defeat him. Considering his work from 1992 till this day, we know he is not going to win, so we are giving him a soft landing to withdraw from the ADC presidential primary so he can look good in the eyes of young Nigerians.”

He added that stepping aside would allow Atiku’s name to be remembered positively by future generations.

“That way, his name can be honoured by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Timing is everything in politics, and this is the time of the South. Age is not on his side.”

Abdulkarim further insisted that the party should rally behind a joint ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, citing the strength of their grassroots support bases.

“We have very strong movements the Obidient movement and the Kwankwassiyya movement. Those around him are not telling him what they are supposed to be telling him.”

He maintained that an Obi–Kwankwaso alliance would present a strong hold capable of mobilising young voters for the next general election.

Nigerian govt bans unauthorized use of ambassador title

The Nigerian government banned the use of the title “Ambassador” by unauthorized individuals.

The federal government, by so doing, said the ambassador title is strictly for individuals formally appointed and accredited by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

Ebienfa raised concerns over what he described as growing confusion caused by individuals presenting themselves as ambassadors without official authorization.

He explained that the ministry had continued to receive inquiries from foreign diplomatic missions seeking to verify the status of Nigerians claiming ambassadorial credentials, a situation he said was straining official communication channels.

“The Ministry has been receiving inquiries from diplomatic missions asking us to verify the status of Nigerians parading themselves as ambassadors,” he said.

According to him, the trend is being driven by organizations that unlawfully confer such titles.

He noted that while some groups and private establishments legitimately appoint individuals as brand ambassadors for promotional purposes, many recipients wrongly elevate the designation into a formal diplomatic identity.

“All these categories of persons, more often than not, add the prefix ‘Ambassador’ to their names, and that is causing serious confusion,” he said.

Ebienfa further revealed that some Nigerians had fallen victim to schemes operated by groups offering so-called ambassadorial appointments in exchange for payments running into millions of naira.

He described such arrangements as fraudulent, noting that the packages allegedly include appointment letters, diplomatic passports, vehicle number plates, and identity cards falsely linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The package includes an appointment letter, diplomatic passport, vehicle number plates, and identity card. This is completely false and misleading,” he said.

The ministry stressed that such practices amount to impersonation and fraud, warning that offenders would face prosecution under relevant laws.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is only the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who has the prerogative to appoint and accredit ambassadors,” Ebienfa stated.

I Can Solve Nigeria’s Problems In 2027, Says Amaechi

A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said his experience in governance and infrastructure development positions him to address Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi, who spoke on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television on Friday, said he understands the country’s problems and has the capacity to solve them.

“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. Because I know the Nigerian problem. And I can solve the Nigerian problem,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor cited projects executed during his time in office, including rail lines and port development, as evidence of his capacity.

He also claimed to have tackled insecurity while serving in government, adding that his record sets him apart from other contenders.

Amaechi, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, criticised the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, saying the economic situation had worsened.

According to him, many Nigerians are experiencing hardship and are dissatisfied with the state of the economy.

“Everybody is suffering, everybody is looking for food to eat. People can’t buy fuel, can’t travel. The airlines are threatening to increase the cost of transportation; everything is skyrocketing.

“For Christ’s sake, President Tinubu does not have the right to speak, he doesn’t. He promised power and said if he doesn’t give power, they should not vote for him. Nigerians are waiting to vote him out,” he said.

Amaechi also alleged attempts to weaken opposition parties, urging that institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary be allowed to operate independently.

“Whether free, fair or not free, if we [ADC] are on the ballot, President Bola Tinubu will lose the election. The problem is he does not want a strong candidate on the ballot,” Amaechi stated.

Amaechi is among several prominent figures in the ADC positioning for the 2027 presidential race.
Other key figures in the opposition coalition include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai and Rauf Aregbesola.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed January 16, 2027, for the presidential election.

The commission also scheduled party primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, during which political parties are expected to select their candidates.
