2027: Makinde’s real ambition not presidency – Okereke

A legislative consultant and public policy analystChibuzo Okereke, says the real ambition of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is not the presidency but building political momentum.

Okereke made this claim on Friday while responding to questions in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.

According to him, Makinde is under heavy political pressure.

He added that after the 2023 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, lost all senatorial seats in Oyo but retained the governorship.

Okereke pointed out that this is after the G5 arrangement that helped shape President Tinubu’s emergence.

“Well, I think first of all, it is within his democratic right to seek for the office of the presidency. I mean, the qualifying credentials are there.

“But I think that strategically speaking, he is mobilizing support to ensure there is momentum for a successor.

“If you look at this, it appears to be a strategic political hedging for him. I don’t really think that his push is more about himself getting to the presidency,” he said.

2027 electoral: YIAGA Africa’s Samson Itodo highlights problems with consensus

Executive Director, YIAGA Africa, Samson Itodo, has insisted that electing a candidate through consensus by political parties is not the problem but how the process is implemented.

Some political parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, are currently experiencing internal wrangling over the implementation of the consensus method of selecting their candidates as prescribed by Section 85 of the Electoral Act 2026.

Some candidates feel they were not carried along when their political parties came out to announce a preferred candidate, insisting on primary elections instead.

Speaking on Arise News on Friday evening, Itodo said, “The problem isn’t consensus, I think the point is the whole philosophy around around consensus isn’t the problem. The problem is how it is implemented.

“And you can clearly see in the build up to the primaries what I call organized theft. It is actually a suppression of political aspiration of people; also a situation where power is concentrated on a few to determine for the vast majority of party members.

“You cannot say that is democratic in every respect. Keep in mind that before the 2022 electoral act, there were only two modes of candidate nomination, direct and indirect primaries.

“In this particular case, it was the late President Buhari that blackmailed and pressured the national assembly to introduce consensus, just to legitimize a process that has always been part of political parties’ candidate nomination process.

“So when you look across board, you clearly see that it is implemented in a way that it not only suppresses the political aspiration of aspirants, but it limits the space for contestation, and that itself is problematic because what you see is really imposition of candidates and it’s not in any way consensus.

“And by the way, what I argued was that there are instances where consensus is acceptable, where everyone in a political party endorses that. That’s why the electoral act provides for the conduct of a special convention to ratify the consensus.”

Donald Trump Announces Killing Of Most Wanted ISIS Leader In Nigeria In Joint Operations

US President Donald Trump says American and Nigerian forces have killed the second-in-command leader of ISIS globally.

Mr Trump said Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was “eliminated” after sources found him in hiding in Africa.

“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the armed forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield,” he wrote in a post on social media.

“Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing.

“He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans.”

He also thanked the Nigerian government for its partnership in the operation.

The Islamic State extremist group did not comment on the claim.

Nigeria had come under scrutiny from Mr Trump, who had said that Christians there were being persecuted, which the African nation’s government denies.

The US had struck what it said were Islamist bases in north-western Nigeria on Christmas Day last year, following Mr Trump’s accusations.
