APC female aspirant demands clarification over failure to conduct Taraba Reps primaries

A female aspirant for the House of Representatives seat for the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State, Liya Samuel Lucy, has expressed concern over the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct its primary election scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Lucy alleged that she and other party members across the state waited throughout the day for officials from the APC National Secretariat to conduct the exercise, but the election did not hold.

It was gathered that the party’s electoral committee and election materials arrived in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, at about 3 pm on Saturday, a development that reportedly made it difficult to distribute materials to the 168 wards across the state before the close of the day.

Speaking with journalists, Lucy called on the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, to intervene and direct the electoral committee in Taraba State to officially brief aspirants on the situation and the next line of action.

She lamented that since the arrival of the committee in the state, aspirants had not received any official communication regarding postponement or possible rescheduling of the exercise.

According to her, the development amounts to an infringement on the rights of aspirants, stressing that party members deserve clear information about the electoral process.

Lucy further stated that as Nigeria’s ruling party, the APC should demonstrate transparency and credibility in its internal electoral process for other political parties to emulate.

“I am calling on the National Chairman of our great party, the APC, to ensure that a new date is fixed and properly communicated to all aspirants in the state. The silence from the electoral committee is not good enough for us as aspirants,” she said.

“The committee arrived in the state and proceeded to meet with the State Working Committee, but we have not heard from them. There was no press briefing explaining why the election did not hold on Saturday, and they did not inform the people of Taraba State when the election would be conducted.

“We are completely in the dark about the entire process, and we need clarification from the National Chairman,” Lucy added.

  • French judge to probe journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s killing

French judge to probe journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s killing

A judge in France is set to probe the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi after rights groups filed a complaint against Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, commonly called MBS.

Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post and a critic of MBS, was assassinated in 2018 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, while on a visit to obtain papers for his marriage.

During Salman’s visit to France in July 2022, the Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) and the rights group Trial International petitioned the French courts on the killing.

The widespread demand for justice has since been amplified by activists and several other organizations, including press freedom watchdog Reporters Without Borders, RSF.

Speaking ahead of the inquiry, Emmanuel Daoud, a lawyer for RSF, said Khashoggi was a victim of an abominable crime, “decided and planned at the highest level of the Saudi state.”

Henri Thulliez, a lawyer for Trial International, stated that “there should no longer be any obstacle” to a judicial investigation into the “atrocious crime committed against Khashoggi.”

During President Joe Biden’s tenure, the United States government indicted MBS in the killing of Khashoggi, releasing a report of the intelligence community’s assessment in 2021.

But during the November 2025 meeting with MBS in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump seemed to have exonerated the crown prince, saying: “He knew nothing about it.”

  • Appeal Court Upholds 2007 Judgment Barring EFCC From Probing Rivers Govt

Appeal Court Upholds 2007 Judgment Barring EFCC From Probing Rivers Govt

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt has ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) remains bound by a 2007 Rivers State High Court judgment that restrained it from investigating Rivers State Government’s public funds and accounts.

A three-member panel comprising Justices Ugochukwu Anthony Ogakwu, Isah Bature Gafai and Zainab Bage Abubakar delivered the judgment on Friday in Appeal No. CA/PH/622/2008, with Justice Ogakwu reading the lead ruling.

The appeal involved the EFCC as appellant and the Attorney General of Rivers State, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the House of Assembly, its Clerk and former Governor Peter Odili as respondents.

The dispute dates back to February 16, 2007, when the Rivers State High Court held that only the Rivers State House of Assembly, the Auditor-General and the Accountant-General have constitutional authority to inquire into and exercise control over the state’s public funds and financial records.

Relying on Sections 120, 121, 122, 124, 125 and 128 of the 1999 Constitution, the court held that those powers could not be shared with any other person, body, agency or organisation, and issued injunctive relief against the EFCC.

In its Friday ruling, the Court of Appeal said the EFCC had not challenged the 2007 judgment for nearly two decades and could not now ignore its binding effect. Justice Ogakwu said the constitutional interpretation made in the earlier judgment, whether right or wrong, remained binding because it was never appealed.

The court also held that the EFCC could not rely on its Establishment Act to override a binding constitutional interpretation, since the Constitution takes precedence over legislation.

“There was no appeal against the said judgment of the High Court of Rivers State. The judgment remains conclusive, and binding and the constitutional interpretation made therein whether right or wrong is accepted as correct and it cannot be argued against since it was not challenged on appeal,” Justice Ogakwu stated in the lead judgment.

The ruling follows proceedings in March 2025, when the Supreme Court dismissed appeals filed by the Rivers State Attorney General and the Speaker of the House of Assembly against the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision allowing the EFCC to challenge the 2007 injunction.

Reacting in a tweet on Saturday, a professor of law and former chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, said the development will have “far-reaching consequences for the EFCC”

He wrote, “Other states will claim benefit of this decision. One consequence could be that the #EFCC will #DoubleDown on harassing students & hair salons in order to form activity. The politicians meanwhile can double down on plunder under cover of judicial protection.

“By the way, in case you have not noticed, the judgment was issued yesterday & there is already a certified copy. That is a small miracle in a country where judgments can take months to break cover.”
