Tinubu Appoints 39 Years Old Segun Aina JAMB New Registrar

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), succeeding Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure expires on July 31, 2026.

Professor Aina, who will be 40 in July, is a distinguished academic and systems expert with extensive experience in national examination systems, digital infrastructure, and public-sector institutional reform.

He holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing, both from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. He has also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

A Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aina began his career with JAMB during his National Youth Service, gaining foundational experience in national admissions and data-driven institutional processes. These insights have shaped his ongoing contributions to examination reform and systems optimisation.

With over 15 years of post-graduation experience, Professor Aina operates at the intersection of technology, policy, and institutional transformation, advising federal and state governments on system design, digital transition, and operational reform. At 39, he became one of Nigeria’s youngest Computer Engineering professors and will now make history as JAMB’s youngest registrar.

He has served as a consultant to major examination bodies, including NECO, NABTEB, and various State Ministries of Education, providing expertise on ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital process optimisation.

Professor Aina is a member of several professional bodies, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor.

Israel Deports Detained Gaza Aid Activists After Outcry

Israel has begun deporting around 430 Gaza-bound flotilla activists after releasing them from Ktziot prison in southern Israel, following an international outcry over their treatment at the hands of Israeli police.

The activists, who were detained after the Israeli navy intercepted their protest flotilla in international waters on Tuesday, will be flown out via Ramon airport near Eilat on the Red Sea.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed his country was conducting special flights to bring Turkish citizens and third-country participants to Turkey. Those on board the flotilla included citizens of Spain, South Korea, Ireland and Italy among others.

The deportations follow a chaotic and controversial detention that drew condemnation from world leaders.

Videos circulated widely showing Israeli police forcing the activists to kneel on the ground in rows with their hands tied behind their backs while far-right Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir looked on. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later distanced himself from the scenes, instructing that the activists be deported as quickly as possible.

The international reaction was swift and sharp, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described Ben-Gvir’s conduct as “inadmissible,” said Italy would summon the Israeli ambassador and demanded an apology.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, whose citizens were also among those detained, called Israel’s actions “way out of line,” questioning the legal basis for arresting people in international waters.

Israeli rights group Adalah, which has been representing the detained activists, confirmed the releases and said its legal team had been monitoring conditions inside the prison throughout the week.

The group had earlier reported that dozens of activists, many of them Tunisian, were on hunger strike, with some refusing water until medical treatment was provided to all detainees.

The flotilla, organised by the Turkish aid group IHH and carrying over 50 boats, had set sail from southern Turkey with the aim of breaking Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged territory.

Israel intercepted the convoy in international waters, hundreds of miles from Gaza’s coastline, citing the need to prevent a breach of what it describes as a lawful naval blockade.

The United States separately imposed sanctions on four activists involved in organising flotilla missions, including Spanish-Palestinian national Saif Abu Keshek, who had been detained during a previous flotilla interception last month before being deported.

  • Maltina Is Redefining the Power of Nourishment Through Science

Maltina Is Redefining the Power of Nourishment Through Science

Nigeria’s leading malt drink, Maltina, has announced a landmark Special Edition of its nationwide Nourishment Tour, set for May 26, 2026, as the brand accelerates its mission to nourish one million young minds nationwide.

Bringing together 50 schools for the largest single activation of the tour yet, the Special Edition represents a powerful new chapter in a movement that is redefining how Nigeria’s next generation understands nourishment, science, and learning.

The Special Edition, set to bring together thousands of students in one of the largest editions of the tour yet, reflects Maltina’s growing commitment to helping young Nigerians better understand the connection between nourishment, science, learning, and development.

At the heart of this initiative is a growing concern around how children understand nutrition today. Across many communities, misinformation continues to shape perceptions of nourishment, with many children believing that vitamins and nutrients primarily come from pharmacy shelves rather than from the foods and drinks they consume every day. And with most schools lacking access to practical, hands-on science education, children rarely get the opportunity to see — and truly understand — the science of nourishment. The Nourishment Tour exists to close both gaps.

Through the Maltina Nourishment Tour, Maltina is addressing the gap by redefining the power of nourishment through science – students will step into the world of discovery, participating in guided STEM experiments and collaborative activities that make nutrition education tangible, memorable, and exciting. By demonstrating the science behind what they eat and drink, the tour transforms abstract concepts into lived experience: helping young Nigerians understand how proper nourishment directly fuels their ability to think clearly, stay energized, learn actively, and grow into their fullest potential.

This milestone moment comes as Maltina marks 50 years of nourishing generations of Nigerians — five decades built on the belief that true happiness must be nourished. The Special Edition is the most visible expression yet of Maltina’s evolution: from providing nourishment to shaping nutrition education to building a lasting legacy of healthier, smarter young minds.

Speaking on the upcoming event, Elohor Olumide-Awe, Head, Non-Alcoholic Portfolio, Nigerian Breweries Plc, said, “Across Nigeria, there are two gaps we are determined to close. The first is the nourishment gap — children who don’t yet understand that the vitamins and nutrients their bodies need come from what they eat and drink every day, not from a pharmacy shelf. The second is the science gap — the reality that most children never get to experience learning through doing. The Maltina Nourishment Tour Special Edition brings our answer to both. By using hands-on STEM experiments to teach the science of nourishment, we are making nutrition education practical, engaging, and real — sparking the kind of curiosity that changes how children think, learn, and make choices for life. This is what Maltina has always stood for: nourishment that goes beyond the functional to support the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of every young Nigerian. As we mark 50 years, we are not just celebrating a legacy — we are building one, nourishing minds and sharing happiness at a scale that will be felt for generations to come.”

As anticipation builds around the Special Edition, schools, educators, parents, and communities across the country continue to engage with the movement, reinforcing Maltina’s role as a brand committed to meaningful nourishment, learning, and youth development on a scale.

Schools can continue to participate in the Maltina Nourishment Tour by visiting maltina.nbplc.com for more information.

‘Nobody forced him’ – Shagari on Fubara’s withdrawal from APC guber primaries

Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Mukhtar Shagari, has described Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State as a mature and well-educated man who knows what is good for himself.

Shagari made this statement on Thursday on Arise Television.

He was reacting to Fubara’s withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship primaries.

According to him, Fubara opted out of the 2027 political process on his own free will, adding that nobody coerced him.

“Nobody forced him. Governor Fubara is a mature and well-educated leader who, like every Nigerian, has the right to participate in the democratic process or choose not to.

“He has made his decision not to take part in the 2027 political process, and that choice should be respected.

“He stated that the decision came after consultations, and that he remains committed to his political affiliation. He has also not suggested that anyone forced or influenced his choice.

“Ultimately, it is a personal decision, and it should be treated as such without unnecessary speculation,” Shagari said.

Rivers: Fubara now free, politics never meant for him – Odinkalu

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, has suggested that Siminalayi Fubara has finally accepted that politics was never meant for him.

Odinkalu made the remark on Thursday in a post on X following Fubara’s withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship primary.

According to him, Fubara, who was a civil servant in 2022, ought to have resigned from service within the timeframe stipulated by the Electoral Act before contesting for office.

He added that Fubara was still serving as a civil servant long after aspirants were expected to resign under the Electoral Act, stressing that the governor was now free to return to the civil service where, according to him, his future should be bright.

Odinkalu wrote: “I am glad @SimFubaraKSC has finally brought clarity to issues & decided that politics is not for him. It never was.
