Senior Polytechnics staff in Akwa Ibom demand implementation of NBTE rule on duty delineation

Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, SSANIP, Zone E, has called for the speedy implementation of the directives and mandates of the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, regarding the proper delineation of duties in the system.

This was part of the resolutions taken at the end of the 49th Regular Zonal Executive Council Meeting of SSANIP South South zone held at the Federal Polytechnic Ukana, Akwa Ibom State on Thursday.

In a communique endorsed by the Zonal Coordinator, Godwin Ikhide and the Zonal Secretary, Eni Bassey Usang, the union stated that proper implementation of the directive would eliminate tendencies of usurpation of Non-teaching staff positions by their teaching counterparts, which, according to it, has been significantly witnessed.

‘‘The Council frowned at the continuous usurpation of positions and responsibilities meant for Non-Teaching Staff in the Polytechnic sector and called for the speedy implementation of the directives and mandates of the National Board for Technical Education regarding the proper delineation of duties in the system,’ the communique said.

The council also expressed reservations over the continued delay in the release of the 2019 scheme of service and called on the federal government to expedite action towards its immediate release and implementation.

On the welfare of staff and members of the union, SSANIP encouraged branches to introduce and strengthen welfare schemes for members, even as it applauded the National leadership of the association for its effective representation in the struggles, negotiations and engagements geared towards improving the welfare of Nigerian workers, particularly members of SSANIP.

The association also commended the management of the Federal Polytechnic Ukana for effective management and utilisation of TETFund allocations in the institution, saying that over 80 percent of projects in the polytechnic are a product of TETFund.

Speaking on sundry issues, the council expressed displeasure over the high rate of insecurity in the country as well as prices of petroleum products, urging the federal government to do something about it as it is taking a toll on the masses, including the polytechnic staff.

Speaking with the Deputy National Secretary of SSANIP, Dr Emmanuel Enyiegor, he revealed other negotiations going on between the Federal government and the Tertiary institutions, noting that in no distant time they will arrive at a point expected to be favourable to both the unions and the government.

‘We are hopeful that in a time not far from now, we’ll be able to come up with a position that will be okay for both Federal Government and unions, that will reflect same to our members and outside the issue of remuneration, there are other things on the table by the union regarding the schemes of service and conditions of service, a review of certain allowances that are due workers in the polytechnic sector, and of course, work environments, and then of staff development, which will also translate at the end of the day to productivity,’’ he said.

PDP Senator Zanna loses 2027 return ticket in Jigawa

The senator representing Jigawa South-West Senatorial District, Mustapha Khabeeb of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has lost his bid to secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.

The lawmaker, popularly known as Senator Zanna, was the only PDP senator elected from Jigawa State during the 2023 general elections.

He has now been replaced by Aminu Wada, a close ally of the PDP gubernatorial candidate, Mustapha Sule Lamido.

Findings revealed that Senator Zanna neither purchased the nomination form nor participated in the party’s primary election process, signalling his withdrawal from the race.

The development followed recent criticism from some constituents, who reportedly accused the senator of poor performance and openly rejected his continued representation.

Speaking during the affirmation ceremony held in Dutse, Mustapha Sule Lamido expressed confidence that the PDP would retain the senatorial seat, describing the zone as a stronghold of the party.

He also dismissed recent claims by the APC state chairman that the ruling party would reclaim the district in the next election cycle.

Lamido urged party members to remain united and committed to ensuring victory for the PDP in the 2027 elections.

Other PDP senatorial candidates affirmed by the party include Dr Aminu Taura for Jigawa North-West and Salisu Mamuda for Jigawa North-East.

Commenting on the exercise, the PDP State Chairman, Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, commended the process, stating that all three senatorial candidates emerged through consensus arrangements within the party.
