Nigerian govt suspends services to Air Peace, Ibom Air, nine others

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has ordered its directorates to suspend services to 11 domestic airlines.

The NCAA also placed them on its updated “No-Pay-No-Service” list over unpaid statutory charges owed to the regulator.

An internal memo by the agency’s Director of Finance and Accounts, Olufemi Odukoya, ordered all departments to withhold regulatory and administrative services from the affected operators until they clear their outstanding debts or agree on repayment plans.

According to the agency, at the centre of the dispute are the five per cent Ticket Sales Charge and Cargo Sales Charge, funds collected by airlines on behalf of the NCAA to support safety oversight, personnel training and economic regulation within the aviation sector.

The memo also directed all directorates to suspend services to the affected airlines pending financial clearance from the Directorate of Finance and Accounts.

The memo was circulated across the authority’s regional offices and copied to the Director-General of Civil Aviation and other senior officials.

According to the memo, airlines affected by the directive include “Air Peace Limited, Ibom Air Limited, Arik Air Limited, United Nigeria Airlines, Umza Air, NG Eagle, Max Air Limited, Caverton Helicopters, Overland Airways, Rano Air and ValueJet.”

“We have directed that no directorate should render any service to the above airline without financial clearance from the director of finance and accounts,” NCAA said.

Ejimakor Demands Release Of Suspected IPOB Member Detained Since 2021

Barr Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called for the immediate release of one Chukwu Sunday Obasi.

Obasi, according to Ejimakor, has been in detention at the custody of the Department of the State Services (DSS) since 2021 for allegedly belonging to the pro-Biafra group.

Ejimakor, in a message sent to THE WHISTLER on Sunday, called on human rights advocates and public-spirited individuals to join the call for the release of the detainee.

He stated that, “On mere suspicion of being an IPOB member, Chukwu Sunday Obasi has been detained by the DSS since March 2021 without trial and access to lawyers/relatives. Please join me in publicly calling for his immediate release or at least presented in court to defend himself.”

IPOB, founded in 2012 by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been campaigning for a referendum to enable the people of the Igbo race of South-East Nigeria to decide if they want to belong to Nigeria’s super structure, or have their sovereign country. Kanu is currently being detained at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Sokoto, after being convicted of treason-related offences by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, last year. Kanu has however appealed his sentencing on the grounds that the activities of IPOB are within the scope of fundamental human rights.

Ogun govt, IBEDC pledge collaboration towards improved electricity supply

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has expressed the readiness of the state to collaborate with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company PLC, IBEDC, towards improving electricity supply across the state.

Governor Abiodun made this remark during a courtesy visit by the Board and Management of IBEDC to the Ogun State to his office on Thursday according to a statement signed by the company management and made available to DAILY POST on Sunday.

On the issue of vandalisation of power infrastructure, Governor Abiodun also assured that the state government is working on introducing stricter laws and enforcement mechanisms to deter vandalism and protect critical electricity assets.

The Governor also disclosed that “the State intends to implement tighter regulatory controls within its electricity market to ensure that only credible and technically competent operators are licensed to operate in the state.”

According to him, the state government will develop a clear roadmap for licensing and regulation of electricity market participants, while ensuring proper oversight of the process.

Earlier, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc, IBEDC, reaffirmed its commitment to improving electricity supply and strengthening power infrastructure across Ogun State through strategic collaboration with the State Government.

Speaking during the engagement, Dr ,Taiwo Afolabi, an IBEDC Board member stated that IBEDC’s transition to new core investors represents a significant turning point for the company as fresh investments aimed at strengthening electricity infrastructure and improving service delivery across the company’s franchise areas, especially Ogun State, will become a reality.

The Managing Director/CEO of IBEDC, Mr Deolu Ijose, in his presentation during the meeting, highlighted the strategic importance of Ogun State within the IBEDC franchise due to its rapid industrialisation, growing population, and increasing energy demand.

Ijose emphasised the need for stronger regulatory coordination and strategic collaboration between IBEDC and the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, OGERC, to ensure a sustainable and investment-friendly electricity market framework.

Among the key requests presented by IBEDC were “support for the licensing of Olumo Electricity Distribution Company Plc (OEDCL) as IBEDC’s Ogun State subsidiary, development of a coordinated engagement framework for market participants, alignment on franchise boundaries and reduction of regulatory overlap within the electricity market.”

He sought the support of the State Government in securing “Right-of-Way approvals, protecting critical electricity infrastructure against vandalism and sabotage, and facilitating industrial power corridors to support economic growth and industrial development.”

Ijose identified strategic projects requiring collaboration and support to include “the Redeemed 33kV Feeder, Magada 33kV Feeder, and the Double Circuit 33kV Feeder from Oke-Aro to Magboro. The projects would significantly improve power reliability and industrial energy access within Ogun State.”

  • FHA Fires Back At Developers Over Land Grabbing Allegations

FHA Fires Back At Developers Over Land Grabbing Allegations

The management of the Federal Housing Authority has dismissed allegations of land grabbing, extortion and administrative high-handedness levelled against its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oyetunde Ojo, describing the claims as baseless and misleading.

In a statement signed by the FHA’s Head of Public Affairs, Kenneth Chigelu, on Sunday,
the Authority accused some media organisations, including Daily Nigerian, Leadership and ThisDay, of publishing allegations by a purported coalition of estate developers without seeking the agency’s side of the story.

The FHA said the group behind the accusations were not genuine developers but professional land grabbers frustrated by reforms introduced by the current management.

According to the Authority, the launch of a digitalisation programme on May 1, 2024, ended analogue operations and curtailed practices such as loss of files, double allocations and document forgery.

The agency stated that the digitisation process, alongside the deployment of a MAX 350 drone for land mapping and monitoring, had improved transparency and enabled the identification of illegally encroached properties.

It added that a Verification, Regularisation and Ratification exercise was conducted nationwide to allow genuine allottees with incomplete documentation to regularise their property records.

The FHA maintained that many individuals who could not provide proof of ownership resorted to media attacks after failing to benefit from loopholes in the old system.

The Authority also denied allegations of delays in land development approvals, insisting that approvals are now processed within two weeks through its One Stop Shop platform, provided applicants submit complete documentation.

It further stated that stricter measures had been introduced to prevent the undervaluation of statutory fees, a move it said had affected individuals allegedly collaborating with compromised officials to short-change the agency.

The FHA reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing that it would not be distracted by what it described as blackmail from disgruntled land grabbers.

The agency challenged members of the alleged coalition to publicly identify themselves and provide genuine proof of land allocation and verification documents.

It also urged the public to disregard the allegations, insisting that efforts to reposition the Authority and safeguard government property would continue uninterrupted.

  • Miyetti Allah Seeks Loans To Cut Beef Prices

Miyetti Allah Seeks Loans To Cut Beef Prices

The Miyetti-Allah Fulaku Yeso Yeso Development Association (MAFYDA) has urged the Federal Government to provide loan facilities to butchers nationwide to enable them to buy cows directly from farmers at livestock markets, rather than through middlemen.

The association said direct access to farmers would greatly reduce the high cost of beef, skin and offal across the country.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), MAFYDA National Security Adviser, Comrade Pariya, identified middlemen between Fulani herders and butchers as major drivers of the rising prices.

He said most butchers could not afford to buy cattle directly from farmers due to lack of funds and were compelled to buy on credit from dealers at inflated prices.

“The dealers take advantage of the butchers’ financial challenges to exploit them,” Pariya said.

“Most butchers usually pay them after selling the meat.

“But if the government supports the butchers with loans, they can go to the cattle markets and buy the number of cows they need. In the long run, prices will crash across the country,” he said.

Pariya said a large cow currently costs between N500,000 and N750,000 at livestock markets, but dealers often resell them for between N1.3 million and N1.5 million, depending on location.

He also cited insecurity and high transportation costs as contributing factors to the price hike.

“Security challenges play a role, but it’s often exaggerated. They will tell you there is a security threat in a certain location, but when you get there, you find nothing.

“If butchers can go directly to the market and buy from farmers, everything will be easier,” he said.

Also speaking, MAFYDA Secretary in Taraba, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, attributed the high cost of beef to rising prices of veterinary drugs and vaccines, consultation fees, and lack of grazing land.

NAN reports that a kilogramme of beef, which sold for between N5,500 and N6,500 earlier in the year, now costs between N8,000 and N9,000, depending on location.
