2027: Aisha Yesufu loses NDC senatorial primary in FCT

Popular socio-political activist, Aisha Yesufu, has lost the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial primary election for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

She lost the election to a chieftain of the party, Amanda Pam.

The activist-turned-politician had said her ambition to represent the FCT in the upper legislative chamber was driven by the desire to solve problems in the nation’s capital and give residents a stronger voice in government.

Aisha Yesufu, a staunch supporter of the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is currently being ridiculed on social media.

A Facebook user, one Comrade Idris Omuya, wrote, “Aisha Yesufu lost out in the NDC FCT senatorial ticket primary to this woman. Where are her Twitter and Facebook fans?”

Another Facebook user, Evangelist Divine Vessel, wrote, “This is the old woman who defeated Aisha Yesufu in the Abuja NDC Senatorial primaries. She has no social media account, she doesn’t go on TV stations to rant like a pregnant raccoon.

“She defeated the social media rabble-rouser and protest ambassador, Aisha Yesufu, at the NDC senatorial primary election.

“Politics is local, not social media and TV ranting.

“She has the structure and Aisha has the Twitter likes and Instagram comments, and elections are not won on social media.”

  • Ignore APC Chairman’s 12m Membership Figure..INEC

    Ignore APC Chairman’s 12m Membership Figure..INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned membership figures of political parties released by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, saying the data did not emanate from the commission.

The Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Dayo Oketola, stated this on Tuesday while reacting to figures attributed to the APC chairman during an interview on ARISE News.

“Dear esteemed media colleagues, please note that this is certainly not from INEC. Thanks,” Oketola said in a message sent to journalists.

Yilwatda had claimed during the interview that the APC has 12.9 million verified registered members, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has 2.4 million members, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) 1.6 million, Labour Party (LP) 1.3 million, and the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) 700,000 members.

Since Yilwatda made the claims during the interview, the figures have been widely circulated across social media platforms with many Nigerians attributing the data to INEC.

The APC national chairman said: “We have about 12.9 million registered voters that were submitted to INEC. Let me give you data. APC submitted 12.9 million registered voters. PDP submitted 2.4 million registered voters. The ADC submitted 1.6 million registered voters. Labour Party submitted 1.3 million registered voters. NDC submitted 700,000 registered members,” he said.

“So these are the data. If you put all these political parties together, they don’t add up to APC’s registered members. All the political parties, this number I’ve counted, they’re not up to the number that APC registered.”

Yilwatda said the ruling party’s membership strength surpassed the combined figures of opposition political parties, insisting that the APC remained the most organised political platform in the country.

He claimed that the APC was the only political party whose membership database had been verified through the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

“But even the most important thing in our own case is that we have verified data. All our data of our members are verified by NIMC. We synchronise the data with NIMC,” he stated.

Yilwatda also defended the outcome of the APC presidential primary election, saying about 10.9 million members voted for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the exercise.

According to him, the turnout showed that only about two million registered APC members failed to participate in the primary election nationwide.

  • Experts warn against environmental pollution, poor sanitation

Experts warn against environmental pollution, poor sanitation

Former Permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the Digital Peers International, DPI, Dr. Mrs Ibukun Odusote, has called for collective efforts towards promoting environmental sustainability, responsible plastic use, cleaner communities, and youth-driven solutions to plastic pollution within the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

Odusote called for the promotion of behavioral change, encouraging innovation in plastic waste management, supporting enterprises, and creating sustainable opportunities for young people within the plastic value chain.

She also pinpointed the importance of the activities of informal waste pickers and recyclers, popularly known called Baban bola also or babanbolas in Abuja and other northern states.

While many Nigerians have called for the removal of these individuals from the city centres over some criminal activities they allegedly involve themselves in, Dr Odusote pointed to how they help to remove and recycle plastic wastes from the streets.

DAILY POST reports that while many of these individuals are honest laborers driven by poverty, the group is highly controversial with authorities and residents frequently linking them to organized crime, vandalism of critical public assets, and burglary in residential estates.

Due to public outcry and security threats, both the FCT Administration and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have enforced bans on scavenging within the city center, restricting them to designated dump sites.

Speaking at the FCT clean-up exercise under the DPI-SG project titled, “Deploying the Power of IT-Engaged Youths in Effective Plastic Use and Plastic Waste Management 2.0,” supported by the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, the Global Environment Facility, GEF, and the Small Gra Programme, SGP, the environmental chief noted that environmental responsibility is a collective duty.

She said, “Cleaner communities require collective action, commitment, and consistency from all stakeholders.

“Baban bola, you don’t know the work you’re doing to keep the environment safe. We appreciate the good you’re doing in recycling plastic wastes…”

Also speaking during the cleaning exercise, Engr Sherifat Lawal, the Divisional Head (Waste Disposal Facility & Resource Recovery), represented by Eyo Maureen from the AEPB office, harped on the concerns for the health of the environment and communities.

She said, “The environment is our shared home. The way we treat it today will determine the kind of future we leave for coming generations. Unfortunately, indiscriminate dumping of waste, poor sanitation practices, and environmental pollution continue to threaten public health, contribute to flooding, and damage our ecosystem.

“Cleanliness is not only the responsibility of government agencies alone; it is a collective responsibility. Every individual, household, market, school, and organization has a role to play in keeping our surroundings clean and safe.

“When we dispose off waste properly, recycle reusable materials, and maintain clean surroundings, we help to prevent diseases, protect our drainage systems, and improve the beauty of our communities.”
