NAFDAC shuts 16 sachet water factories in Rivers crackdown

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned sachet water producers to stop producing unregistered water and to renew expired licences or face punishment.

The warning was given by the Director of NAFDAC in the South-South Zone, Chukwuma Oligbu, after the agency carried out an enforcement operation in parts of Rivers State, including Asari Toru, Akuku Toru, Degema, and Ikwerre Local Government Areas.

During the operation, 16 sachet water factories were shut down and their owners were invited for questioning.

NAFDAC said the factories were found operating in dirty conditions, using unsafe filters, providing wrong addresses, and, in some cases, using expired licences or violating other regulations.

In a statement on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer of the South-South Zone, Cyril Monye, the agency also warned that factories operating illegally or obstructing officials from carrying out their duties would be shut down and their owners prosecuted.

NAFDAC further urged the public to report any illegal water production.

According to the statement, “The sachet water factories include: Obra Bo Table Water, Abalama, Asari Toru LGA; Loilia Table Water, Okpo, Degema LGA; Jima Table Water, Obuama Harry Town, Degema LGA; and Inye Table Water, Obuama Harry Town, Degema LGA.

“Others are Obuta Table Water, Obuama Harry Town, Degema LGA; S.P. Nimi Table Water, Obuama Harry Town, Degema LGA; Soaltam Table Water, Obuama Harry Town, Degema LGA; and Piasso Table Water, Usokun, Degema LGA.

“Also shut down are: Imumsco Table Water, Port Harcourt–Degema Road, Degema LGA; Granpa Table Water, Abonnema, Akuku Toru LGA; Daa Ajuka Table Water, Abonnema, Akuku Toru LGA; and Diob Table Water, Abonnema, Akuku Toru LGA.

“At Ikwerre LGA, four factories were shut down. They include AQUA-TOBSON Table Water, DUCO Table Water, CHISODEK Table Water, and NEO BRAIN Table Water.”

NAHCON orders refunds after rejecting meals served to pilgrims

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, has ordered refunds for pilgrims affected by a meal service incident in Saudi Arabia after rejecting some food supplied to Nigerian pilgrims for failing to meet approved health and packaging standards during the ongoing 2026 Hajj exercise.

NAHCON disclosed this in a statement issued by its management, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerian pilgrims participating in the 2026 Hajj exercise.

The commission explained that Saudi health authorities have continued to enforce strict food safety regulations during the ongoing pilgrimage, especially due to prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom.

According to the statement, some dinner meals served to Nigerian pilgrims on the night of May 27, 2026, did not meet the required standards for handling and packaging and were immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi authorities.

To minimise the impact on affected pilgrims, the service support company provided alternative light refreshments, while members of the NAHCON board moved around to brief state officials and managers on the situation.

As part of efforts to protect pilgrims’ welfare, the Chairman of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, directed the commission’s security committee to investigate the caterers responsible for the meals, as well as individuals involved in facilitating the contracts.

The chairman also ordered a separate probe into some tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than the number officially registered and allegedly exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims during the Hajj exercise.

NAHCON warned that any operator found guilty after the investigations would face appropriate sanctions, including the withdrawal of operating licences.

The commission further disclosed that arrangements had already begun for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the meal incident.

While appreciating the patience and understanding of the pilgrims, NAHCON assured them that their welfare remains a top priority throughout the pilgrimage.

“NAHCON appreciates the understanding of the pilgrims and reassures all of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise,” the statement said.

Segilola resources commissions community-owned water factory, road project in Osun, creating jobs and driving economic growth

Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL) welcomed His Imperial Majesty, the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup (Ajimoko III), to its operations in Odo-Ijesa, Osun State, as part of his tour of major industries and community development projects across Ijesaland.

The Deputy General Manager, Mr. Olusola Olusomidomo, received His Imperial Majesty on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Segun Lawson.

During the visit, His Imperial Majesty toured SROL’s facilities, including the Segilola Gold Mine, the Site Pit, and the LRP Ifesowapo Fish Market.

The visit also featured the commissioning of key Community Development Agreement (CDA) projects, including the community-owned Ogere-Ekun Golden Water Factory in Iperindo, the rehabilitation of the Imogbara/Odo-Ijesha road corridor, the Olumolu of Imogbara Palace, and a block of classrooms at the Imogbara Primary School.

The projects reinforce SROL’s commitment to sustainable development, infrastructure improvement, and economic empowerment across its host communities in Osun State. Together, these initiatives have created direct employment opportunities for more than 80 community indigenes, strengthening SROL’s commitment to sustainable community development and inclusive economic growth. Currently, 27% of the workforce at the Segilola Gold Mine comes from host communities, while 25% of employees are from Osun State.

Located on Araromi Street in Iperindo, the Ogere-Ekun Golden Water Factory (OGW) is a community-owned venture developed as part of the company’s CDA commitments. Construction of the facility was completed in January this year following a four-month development period, with all regulatory approvals secured ahead of the official commissioning in May 2026.

The facility is designed to produce 3,000 litres of treated water per hour. It is equipped with full reverse osmosis and ozone treatment systems, PET bottle-blowing and sachet water production lines, shrink-wrapping systems, steam labelling equipment, bottle-capping systems, and a 60kVA backup generator to ensure uninterrupted production. Supporting infrastructure includes a borehole water source, overhead storage tanks, sterilisation units, a production hall with dedicated raw-material and finished-goods stores, a loading bay, a generator house, and perimeter fencing.

From inception, the OGW enterprise was designed as a self-sustaining, revenue-generating venture capable of reducing host communities’ dependence on external drinking water supplies and creating long-term economic value for these communities. The factory is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of community representatives, ensuring local ownership and accountability.

In addition to the water factory, SROL also completed the rehabilitation of a 2.4-kilometre stretch of road connecting Imogbara and Odo-Ijesha. The project included grading, laterite filling compaction, and construction of rigid pavement roads using interlocking stones. To improve durability and year-round accessibility, the rehabilitation also incorporated double-sided drainage systems and, where necessary, culvert installations, helping reduce waterlogging and prevent future road damage.

Speaking during the commissioning, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Haastrup, commended SROL for providing employment opportunities to over 2,000 individuals across the South-West region, noting that 40% of the beneficiaries are from communities within Ijesaland. The paramount ruler of Ijesaland also underscored the importance of adhering to Community Development Agreements (CDAs) and implementing impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that directly benefit host communities.

Highlighting the impact of the projects, Madhurii Sarkar-Amoda, Community Development and Stakeholder Manager at SROL, said:

“We are proud of these community development projects because in a place like Nigeria, where only 67% of the population has access to clean drinking water, millions of people, particularly in rural areas, are left to rely on unsafe water sources, which cause preventable water-borne illnesses. This newly commissioned water factory solves this problem for the Iperindo community by providing a trusted drinking water source for residents and it also serves as a source of livelihood and economic prosperity that will outlive the mine. On the other side, the rehabilitation of the road will improve access to Imogbara and Odo-Ijesha, unlocking greater economic opportunities for both communities. The project will also enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians, while reducing flooding through the installation of an efficient drainage system.”

Also, speaking on the water factory, HRM Oba Isaiah Adedeji, the Tirimi of Iperindo, said: “On behalf of the people of Iperindo, we deeply appreciate SROL for providing this sustainable enterprise, which not only creates employment opportunities for our youth but also delivers long-term economic value. Most importantly, this is a community-owned enterprise that will hopefully continue to bring prosperity to our people for years to come”

The completion of these projects reflects SROL’s commitment to building sustainable partnerships with its host communities through investments that create value and support long-term economic development.

World Cup 2026: ‘Because he’s there’ – Vinicius Jr names player to help Portugal win trophy

Real Madrid winger, Vinicius Jr has identified Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, as one of the frontrunners for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The tournament is set to commence next month across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ronaldo recently celebrated his first significant trophy with Al-Nassr. After narrowly defeating rivals Al-Hilal to secure the Saudi Pro League title, the talented forward aims to carry that momentum into the World Cup.

Historically, Portugal has never claimed the trophy, and this may be Ronaldo’s final opportunity to achieve that goal.

Vinicius believes that the former Real Madrid star can significantly impact the World Cup this summer.

He has recognized Portugal as one of the favorites and praised the quality of players available to them.

The Brazilian acknowledged Vitinha and Joao Neves as two of the finest talents in the current generation, while also mentioning Nuno Mendes, Rafael Leao, and Joao Felix.

Vinicius expressed on CazeTV via MadridXtra, “Is Portugal one of the favorites? Yes, because Cristiano is there, and that is important. There are Vitinha and João Neves, who rank among the best of the current generation. Nuno, Leão, and Félix are also players I have a strong rapport with.”

Portugal faced elimination in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the hands of Morocco. In the 2026 tournament, they will compete in Group K against DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.

  • Senator Ovie Omo-Agege Joins NDC 24 Hours After Ditching APC

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege Joins NDC 24 Hours After Ditching APC

    PRESS STATEMENT

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege Joins the National Democratic Congress, Declares for Delta Central Senate 2027

    Date: Thursday, May 28, 2026

    Fellow Deltans,

Today, I formally announce my decision to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress [NDC].

This decision is the product of weeks of reflection, wide consultations, and honest conversations with the people I serve. I have consulted with my political associates nationwide, supporters, and stakeholders who are the backbone of our communities. Across all these engagements, one truth stood out: Deltans want leadership that listens first, acts with integrity, and delivers results that can be seen and felt in daily life.

I thank the leadership of the NDC for reaching out and engaging me in this process: Senator Seriake Dickson, Leader and Founder; Senator Moses Cleopas, National Chairman; Governor Peter Obi, Presidential Aspirant; and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and NDC Chieftain. Their commitment to building a credible, people-first alternative gives me confidence that the NDC is the right platform for Delta State and Nigeria.

The NDC represents that kind of leadership. It is a party built on the principles of inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism. It is a platform where decisions are not made in closed rooms but through open consultation with stakeholders and members. It is a platform where public office is treated as a duty to the people, not a privilege for a few. After careful consideration, I am convinced that the NDC offers the clearest path to advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria.

On this platform, I will contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections. Let me be clear: this is not about me. This is about the mandate you entrusted to me in 2019 and the renewed call from our people for my return to the Senate to provide effective representation. That call is loud, consistent, alive, and urgent. I cannot ignore it, and I will not betray the trust you have placed in me.

Delta State holds a position of immense responsibility in Nigeria. We are among the largest producers of oil and gas, resources that have sustained the national economy for decades. Our agricultural lands are fertile and capable of feeding millions. Our business community has shown remarkable resilience despite harsh economic conditions. Our young people are educated, innovative, and ready to lead if given the opportunity. Yet the reality on the ground does not match this potential.

In too many communities, roads have collapsed and remain impassable for months. Primary health centers lack drugs, equipment, and staff. Schools struggle with overcrowding and inadequate facilities. Young graduates return home without jobs, and small business owners battle a hostile environment and poor infrastructure. Meanwhile, federal allocations to Delta State have consistently run into hundreds of billions of naira annually. The gap between these resources and the lived reality of our people is unacceptable.

Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in CBN accounts while our people suffer from bad roads, collapsed hospitals, and abandoned communities. This is not governance. It is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of public trust. Deltans deserve better than press releases, billboards, and photo-ops. Nigeria deserves better than a political class that treats public office as a personal business.

I believe this situation can and must change. Change requires a platform committed to discipline, transparency, and service. The National Democratic Congress was built for this moment. It stands for accountability, for justice, for inclusion, and for true federalism. It is the only platform strong enough to challenge the cycle of failure and return power to the people where it belongs. That is why I am joining the NDC.

I know what it takes to build a political structure and make it competitive in Delta State. We did it before for the APC when many said it was impossible. We mobilized at the grassroots, organized our people, and changed the political equation. I bring that same resolve and experience to the NDC. Our immediate priority will be to strengthen the party from the ward level upward, register new members, and prepare a credible slate of candidates for the 2027 elections.

I will not go to Abuja to warm the bench. I am going to fight for Delta Central, and as your senator, my focus will remain on delivering representation that matters. I will take the concerns of Delta Central directly to the National Assembly and ensure they are debated, addressed, and followed through. I will push for fair allocation of federal projects and resources to our senatorial district. I will work to ensure that every kobo released to Delta State is accounted for and applied to projects that improve the lives of our people. I will also advocate for policies that create jobs, support small and medium enterprises, improve agricultural productivity, and expand access to quality healthcare and education.

I will represent Delta North, Delta South, and Delta Central with fairness and balance. A divided Delta is a weakened Delta. When we speak with one voice, Abuja listens. When we work together, we can secure the infrastructure, investments, and policies that our state deserves.

Beyond the Senate, the NDC will field candidates for the governorship and other elective positions who understand the challenges of Delta State and have the competence, humility, and character to address them. Nigeria itself needs a reset. We need leadership that truly restores hope, protects citizens, grows the economy, and respects the rule of law. I will work tirelessly for the victory of our presidential candidate and for a government that puts Nigerians first.

This is more than an election cycle. This is a defining moment for Delta State and for Nigeria. It is a choice between continuing with a system that rewards silence and mediocrity, or choosing a new direction built on accountability and service.

To the youth of Delta State: your time is now. Do not accept the lie that you must wait your turn. Organize in your communities, register to vote, and make your voices impossible to ignore. Your energy, creativity, and courage are the most powerful tools we have to change this state.

To the women who hold our families and communities together: mobilize your networks, your markets, your churches, and your neighborhoods. Your participation will determine the outcome of 2027.

To our elders and traditional rulers: your wisdom has guided us through difficult times before. Speak now for the generation coming behind you. Your voice gives legitimacy and direction to this movement.

And to every registered voter: your Permanent Voter’s Card is your greatest power. It is stronger than money, stronger than intimidation, and stronger than propaganda. Protect it, use it, and use it wisely in 2027.

In 2027, we will end the era of excuses, empty promises, and leaders who vanish after elections. We will return power to the people of Delta State and to the people of Nigeria. Together, under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, we will reclaim Delta State. Together, we will reclaim Nigeria.

The work starts now. The time is now. The people are ready.

    Signed:

His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR, KSJI

Deputy President of the 9th Senate and Obarisi of Urhoboland.

Onuigbo Blasts ‘Ballot Bazaar’ In APC Senatorial Primary, Demands Probe

A candidate for the Abia Central Senatorial ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rep. Sam Onuigbo, has called on those behind attacks against him to explain their roles in what he described as the “whimsical allocation of votes” during the party’s May 18 senatorial primary election.

Onuigbo alleged that revelations surrounding the disputed primary had unsettled those responsible for what he termed a “ballot bazaar” in the aborted exercise, adding that the individuals involved were now afraid that their alleged clandestine activities within the APC were being exposed.

The former lawmaker was reacting to reports dismissing a petition submitted by some APC stakeholders in Abia Central Senatorial District challenging the conduct of the primary election.

He urged those behind the attacks to stop worsening what he described as the damage already done to the image and reputation of the APC in the South-East.

A group identifying itself as leaders of the APC in Abia Central had earlier petitioned the party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, in a letter titled “Calculated Campaign of Falsehood.”

The group accused Onuigbo of making false allegations about irregularities in a bid to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, Onuigbo challenged the authors of the petition to explain what he called the “magic figures” allocated to the three contestants in the disputed primary.

According to him, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) should investigate how one candidate allegedly received 36,935 votes, while two others were allocated 11,457 and 5,833 votes respectively.

He further alleged that the primary process was hijacked, citing complaints by former Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, who reportedly petitioned the APC leadership after waiting throughout the day without any official arriving at her Osisioma Ngwa Ward 2 or anywhere in the local government area to conduct the exercise.

“This shameful conduct by a few overzealous individuals in the Abia Central Senatorial primary has cost the APC not only in terms of reputation, but also the structural harmony existing in the party,” Onuigbo said.

“For instance, as we speak, Senator Nwaogu has left APC out of the vexatious denial of participation in a simple exercise as senatorial primary.”

Onuigbo questioned how a senatorial district with about 56,860 registered members could produce 36,935 votes for one candidate when, according to him, elections did not hold in most wards across the six local government areas in the district.

“Let them help the national leadership of our great party make sense of this puzzle: In a Senatorial District that has roughly 56,860 members, how did the architects of the confusion in Abia Central Senatorial primary election come about the 36,935 votes it gifted a single candidate, when no election held in most wards of the six Local Government Areas that make up the Senatorial District?

“The authors of the fabricated results for Abia Central Senatorial primary should also tell Nigerians where they got the certificate of return issued to the alleged winner, when the national leadership of the party categorically denied that no such document except Mr President’s certificate of return was printed,” he added.

The former House of Representatives member lamented that the controversy had turned the APC in Abia State into a “laughing stock” instead of strengthening the party ahead of future elections.

“I wish to encourage the leaders of our great party to painstakingly get to the roots of the confusion that engulfed the conduct of Abia Central Senatorial primary election, as well as the reputation damage caused by those who hijacked the process for their narrow interest,” Onuigbo added.
