Concerns over extortion, improper dressing and lapses in arms accountability have prompted the Yobe State Police Command to issue fresh directives aimed at repositioning policing in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, issued the warning on Tuesday during a strategic meeting with the command’s management team, area commanders, tactical commanders, divisional police officers, heads of departments and other senior officers at the State Police Headquarters, Damaturu.

In a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the meeting was convened to cascade directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan, issued during the recent National Strategic Conference with Commissioners of Police and the Force Management Team.

According to the statement, CP Jibrin commended personnel for their commitment to the fight against crime but stressed that professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights must remain the foundation of policing in Yobe.

The CP declared zero tolerance for extortion and other unethical practices capable of eroding public trust in the police.

“Any officer found wanting will face appropriate disciplinary action,” he warned.

He also directed divisional police officers and heads of formations to ensure proper custody, supervision and accountability of all arms and ammunition under their control, while emphasising the need for responsible use of force and firearms as part of the standard best practices of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Commissioner tasked officers with strengthening collaboration with traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, transport unions and civil society groups, noting that community policing remains key to crime prevention and intelligence gathering.

He further directed that priority be given to the School Protection Initiative through regular engagements with school authorities to enhance the safety of educational institutions across the state.

CP Jibrin, however, expressed concern over disregard for approved dress regulations and cautioned personnel against the unauthorised use of detachable name tags, desert boots and other improper dressing contrary to Force Orders.

He said the appearance and conduct of officers significantly influences public perception of the police.

“Officers must align with the IGP’s renewed vision of a more professional, accountable, intelligence-led and service-oriented Police Force, and to project the NPF positively through exemplary service”, he said.

Bendel Insurance have wrapped up the signing of defender David Adekunle for the 2026–27 season, DAILY POST reports.

Adekunle penned a one-year contract with the Benin Arsenals.

He joined Bendel Insurance from Abia Warriors.

Bendel Insurance described Adekunle’s signing as part of the team’s defensive reinforcement for the new season.

“The former Abia Warriors defensive strongman is part of our defensive reinforcement plan for the new season,” Bendel Insurance wrote after Adekunle’s unveiling.

Adekunle is expected to team up with his new teammates for pre-season preparations.

Troops of the 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 4 of Operation DELTA SAFE, have recovered about 1,200 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly known as diesel, after a suspected oil bunkerer abandoned his vehicle and fled in Akwa Ibom State.

The recovery followed an anti-oil bunkering operation carried out at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, along the Onna–Etinan Road.

The Army said the operation was based on credible surveillance of a suspected oil bunkerer who was driving an Infiniti Jeep with registration number EPE 937 EY.

According to the military, the suspect escaped after sighting the troops. He abandoned the vehicle following a brief pursuit and fled into the surrounding bush.

A search of the abandoned SUV led to the discovery of 40 nylon bags containing approximately 1,200 litres of suspected illegally refined diesel.

The recovered petroleum products are estimated to be worth N2,256,000.

The Army said the vehicle and the recovered products were secured and handled in line with the mandate of Operation DELTA SAFE. It added that no casualties or other incidents were recorded during the operation.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations against illegal oil bunkering and other economic crimes in the Niger Delta.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has said it did not force the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, out of the Labour Party and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, respectively.

Speaking during an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Tuesday, the National Chairman of the party, Nentawe Yilwatda, denied allegations that the ruling party is responsible for the internal crises and defections rocking opposition parties.

Yilwatda said the APC neither forced Obi out of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, nor compelled him to leave the Labour Party or join any other political platform.

“Nobody in APC chased Peter Obi out of PDP. Nobody from APC chased him out of the Labour Party; nobody in APC chased him out of the Labour Party to ADC. Who chased him from ADC again to the NDC,” he asked.

According to him, the former Anambra state governor had been changing political parties long before the APC assumed power at the federal level.

He also denied claims that recent defections from the APC reflected declining support for the party, arguing that many politicians who left were motivated by the desire to secure electoral tickets rather than ideological differences.

The APC National Chairman stressed that the APC remained united and attractive to Nigerians, adding that one year after assuming office as national chairman, the party had fulfilled key promises aimed at strengthening its internal structure and expanding its appeal.

Nollywood actor Ugo Nwokolo has stirred reactions after claiming that internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo, has played a role in keeping Nigeria’s economy afloat amid the country’s worsening economic conditions.

Nwokolo made the remark during a video discussion, where he argued that the rising cost of living and soaring house rents have made it almost impossible for many civil servants to survive on their salaries.

According to him, workers earning between N50,000 and N90,000 monthly cannot afford the millions of naira now being charged for rent in cities such as Abuja and Lagos.

“Personally, I think Yahoo has helped keep the economy afloat. Do you expect a civil servant to afford house rent of N3 million or N5 million in Abuja?” he said.

The actor also questioned how low-income earners could afford other rising costs, including clothing, saying only wealthy individuals, including fraudsters, appear capable of meeting such expenses.

“If you go to Lagos now, the least you’ll see for a two-bedroom apartment is about N7 million or N8 million. Who is supposed to afford it? The civil servants? Of course, it’s the fraudsters,” he added.

Nwokolo, however, insisted he was not endorsing criminal activities but argued that internet fraud has contributed to economic activity because many Nigerians are struggling to survive.

“I’m not justifying crime, but yes, Yahoo is helping the economy. How do you expect people to live in this kind of economy?” he said.

A former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has alleged that the Federal Government is weakening the Nigeria Police Force by deliberately failing to adequately equip it, arguing that the development has contributed to the country’s worsening insecurity.

Okiro made the allegation on Tuesday at the first Daily National Dialogue on Security held in Abuja, describing the police as the lead agency for internal security.

He stated that the government’s failure to properly arm and support the force had undermined its capacity to effectively tackle crime.

“The government, I would say, is contributing to insecurity itself. The police is the lead agency for internal security. But the government deliberately, I say deliberately, without any fear of contradiction, disarmed the police. The result is insecurity,” he said.

The former police boss lamented that the police had been left to confront increasingly sophisticated criminal groups without the equipment needed to perform their constitutional duties.

He equally blamed the shortage of police personnel on years of failure to recruit replacements for officers leaving the service.

While recalling his tenure as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, PSC, in 2013, Okiro noted the commission discovered that there had been no recruitment into the force for five years despite significant losses through retirement, death and other causes.
