Media professionals caution against fake news

Media professionals have cautioned inexperienced journalists against purveying unverified news, stating that dissemination of fake news could lead to serious litigations.

The stakeholders spoke to reporters in Abuja on Monday as part of activities to mark the 100 years celebration of Daily Times Newspaper.

According to them, no media organization can survive political transitions, economic upheavals and technological changes if it is not committed to the ethics of journalism.

Tony Amokeodo, ex-spokesperson to a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu called on reporters to verify their contents from primary sources and not secondary.

“Some journalists rely on secondary sources and not primary sources. Any journalist that wants to excel must avoid beer parlor rumours and stick to facts. Get your facts from your primary source”, he said.

According to Amokeodo, some “reporters are not journalists”, lamenting the trend of misinformation on online platforms, where he said “anything goes”.

On the alleged attack on journalists and media house by authorities, Mr Tony blamed lack of commitment to the ethics of journalism.

Similarly, Charles Ozoemena, the Managing editor of Daily Times warned that fake news could attract serious litigations, urging journalists to stick to facts by properly verifying media contents.

“If you are not sure of the fact, don’t go there. A lot of journalists just share whatever breaking news that they see online. You are sharing a news that you don’t know the source and you are not even sure of.

“You must have to confirm the story by yourself before sharing, otherwise, you are exposing yourself to serious litigations.

“Instead of confirming stories, you share whatever press releases you see, that is lazy journalism as far as I am concerned”.

Also speaking, the founder of Folio Media Group and Publisher of Daily Times, Mr Fidelis Anosike urged consistency in the profession, stating that perfection can only be achieved via repeated actions.

He said, “The next ten years of the profession will be defined by real journalists. If you are a real journalist, you should be able to write, background your stories, do research and structure your content. The profession is not for the faint-hearted.

“You can’t be a journalist, then after five years, you go and do real estate, then after another five years you return, no. For you to be a perfectionist in whatever you are doing, you have to do it repeatedly overtime.”

Mr Anosike earlier described the centenary celebration of Daily Times as a defining moment not only for the organisation but also for Nigerian journalism.

Both teams narrowly missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Poland defeated Albania before suffering a 3-2 loss to Sweden in the European playoff final, while Nigeria overcame Gabon but fell to DR Congo in a penalty shootout in the African playoff final.

Head coach Eric Chelle, who recently guided the Super Eagles to a successful Unity Cup title defence in London, expressed confidence ahead of the encounter.

“We are trying to build a winning culture within this team, and that mentality is very important,” Chelle said. “Some may argue that it is difficult to play matches at this time because many players have been in holiday mode for a couple of weeks, but the job must be done.

  • US-Iran conflict affecting Lagos infrastructure projects – State govt

US-Iran conflict affecting Lagos infrastructure projects – State govt

Lagos State Government has revealed that the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran is beginning to impact some of its critical infrastructure projects, including the construction of the 150-bed Massey Children’s Hospital on Lagos Island.

The government also addressed concerns over the delayed opening of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge, explaining that the facility cannot yet be opened to traffic because work on connecting roads is still ongoing.

The disclosures were made on Monday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing commemorating the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration at Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Dr Adekunle Olayinka, said progress on the reconstruction of the Massey Children’s Hospital had been affected by challenges associated with the importation of key construction materials.

According to him, documentation submitted by the contractor indicated that the disruptions were linked to the ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran.

“The contractor, according to documents made available to us, has experienced delays in importing necessary construction materials due to the ongoing war between the United States and Iran,” Olayinka said.

The Massey Children’s Hospital project involves the transformation of the existing facility on Lagos Island into a state-of-the-art seven-storey specialist paediatric hospital. Upon completion, it is expected to become the largest dedicated children’s hospital in Nigeria, offering a broad range of healthcare services from basic medical care to specialised paediatric treatment.

Despite the challenges, Olayinka said significant progress had been recorded on the project, noting that about 750 jobs had been created through the hospital’s construction.

He added that another major healthcare project, a 280-bed General Hospital in Ojo, has generated approximately 600 employment opportunities.

Olayinka reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to completing ongoing health infrastructure projects despite prevailing global economic and geopolitical challenges.

“The Sanwo-Olu administration has demonstrated that the restoration of public health facilities remains a priority,” he said.

He further noted that the government remains focused on delivering a modern healthcare facility capable of meeting the growing demand for specialised paediatric services across Lagos State.

Also speaking, Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, said the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge has yet to be fully opened to traffic because construction work is still ongoing on critical connecting roads, including Salvation Road, Adeola Street and Toyin Street, as well as an adjoining landmark monument project.

He assured that the bridge would be opened to motorists once all supporting infrastructure linked to the project is completed.

Daramola disclosed that since 2019, the state government has delivered 362 roads spanning approximately 347 kilometres, alongside significant investments in key sectors such as healthcare, education, justice delivery, public safety and digital infrastructure.

He added that 130 roads covering about 113 kilometres were completed within the past year alone.

According to him, several major road projects, including the Eti-Osa–Lekki–Epe Expressway corridor, Gberigbe Road in Ikorodu, Aka-Kemberi Road in Ojo, Ijegun-Ijagemo Road and Akesan-Igando Road, have reached advanced stages of completion and are awaiting commissioning.

He further stated that work is nearing completion on other strategic routes, including the Igbogbo–Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Igbe Road, Agric-Isawo-Konu-Arepo Road and the Lagos-Badagry carriageway.
