Task force seals high-tension site, 37 other illegal structures in Kano

The Kano State Government’s Special Task Force Committee on Illegal Structures has sealed an alleged illegal plaza construction site at Unguwar Wambai in Gwale Local Government Area, alongside 37 other structures across the state.

The exercise carried out on Tuesday, was led by officials of the Kano Geographic Information System (KANGIS), who said the action was taken to prevent further safety risks and violations of building regulations.

Speaking during the operation, the Chairman of the committee and Director General of KANGIS, Dr. Dalhatu Aliyu Sani, said the sealed site is located in a high-risk and high-tension area that poses danger to residents.

“There cannot be building very close to high tension place. That is why we stopped, sealed, and secured the place immediately,” he said.

He described the construction as illegal, stressing that safety concerns made the government step in immediately.

“This is illegal. How can someone build in a risk zone? This is a danger area, and the government does not want people to play with the lives of Kano residents.

“There should be a restricted zone. At least 50 feet should be left on both sides. If you build here, it will affect people’s lives and even the building itself,” he said.

He warned the owners of the property to stop the construction immediately.

According to him, the government would take legal action if the directive is ignored.

“We are calling on the owner of this structure to stop immediately. It is for their own benefit. If they refuse to comply, the government will take drastic legal action. This will serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.

He also urged residents and developers in Kano to follow planning laws and regulations, noting that compliance would help make the state safer and better organised.

“We want the people of Kano to do the right thing and abide by the laws so that Kano will be a good model,” he added.

The task force also sealed 37 other structures across the Eastern and Western Bypass corridors, including truck parks, ongoing construction sites, and fuel station projects.

The affected sites include Baffa Manager uncompleted building at Eastern Bypass, a two-storey plaza along the bypass, 300-metre row of shops with fencing, Triplex Plaza at Ladanai Layout, and multiple garages and fenced lands among others.

  • U.S. Proposes Tariffs On 60 Economies Over Forced Labour Concerns

U.S. Proposes Tariffs On 60 Economies Over Forced Labour Concerns

The United States government has proposed additional tariffs of up to 12.5 per cent on imports from 60 economies, accusing them of failing to ban goods made with forced labour and creating what it described as an uneven playing field for American workers.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) announced the proposed duties on Tuesday, following months of investigations into trading partners under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.

The tariffs still need to go through a public comment period before taking effect, with written submissions accepted until July 6, after which the USTR will hold hearings before making a final determination.

Of the 60 economies targeted, 54 were found to have “failed to impose and effectively enforce” bans on imports of goods produced with forced labour and would face an additional tariff of 12.5 per cent.

The remaining six economies, which were found to have failed to sufficiently engage with the U.S. on the issue, would face a 10 per cent tariff.

The announcement includes some of Washington’s largest and most important trading partners, including China, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Norway, Switzerland, Israel, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Goods from Canada and Mexico that comply with the North American free trade pact will be exempt, as will certain categories including beef, coffee and specific fruits and nuts.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the action was necessary to protect American workers.

“The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labour is unacceptable,” he said. “This creates a dynamic where American workers are forced to compete globally on an uneven playing field.”

The move comes ahead of the July 24 expiry of a temporary 10 per cent tariff the Trump administration imposed on February 20, the day the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s sweeping global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The forced labour action represents Washington’s attempt to rebuild its broader tariff agenda through an alternative legal route that does not require congressional approval.
The proposal drew immediate criticism from trading partners.

The European Commission said it was reviewing the announcement and reserved the right to take countermeasures.

Several Asian governments also expressed concern, with South Korea’s trade ministry saying it would consult closely with the private sector on potential impacts.

  • Israeli envoy displays Hezbollah drone at UN, warns of growing threat

Israeli envoy displays Hezbollah drone at UN, warns of growing threat

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has displayed what he said was a Hezbollah drone during a United Nations Security Council meeting, warning members of the international body about the growing threat posed by advanced unmanned aerial systems used by non-state armed groups.
Addressing the council, Danon said the drone exemplified the type of technology increasingly being deployed by Hezbollah and other armed groups in modern conflicts.

Holding up the device during his presentation, the Israeli envoy described it as a small, low-cost but highly effective weapon capable of evading traditional defence systems.

“This is an example of a drone used by Hezbollah, this is what we are dealing with,” Danon said.

According to him, Hezbollah has been deploying various types of drones, including some equipped with fibre-optic technology, making them difficult to detect and counter.

“These drones weigh less than two kilograms, they fly low and are very difficult to detect, by the time you hear one above your head, it is often too late,” he said.

Danon further claimed that the drones can travel considerable distances without detection and are resistant to conventional electronic warfare measures.

“It can fly undetected for tens of miles. It does not rely on a radio signal and cannot be easily jammed,” he said.

The ambassador noted that the technology provides operators with a live video feed and direct control throughout a mission, enabling precise targeting.

“It gives the operator a live video feed and direct control until impact. This is modern warfare, cheap, precise and deadly,” he added.

Danon also argued that the technology is increasingly accessible, stating that some of the components used in such systems can be acquired through commercial online platforms.

The presentation comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, which have exchanged cross-border attacks in recent years.

In recent weeks, Hezbollah has released videos that it says show drone strikes targeting Israeli military vehicles and personnel operating near the Israel-Lebanon border. The group has frequently highlighted its growing drone capabilities as part of its military strategy.

The display at the Security Council underscored growing concerns among governments and security experts about the proliferation of relatively inexpensive drone technology and its impact on modern warfare.

Military analysts have warned that small unmanned aerial systems are increasingly changing the nature of armed conflict, allowing both state and non-state actors to conduct surveillance, intelligence gathering and precision attacks at relatively low cost.

Police uncover illegal firearms fabrication workshop in Potiskum, arrest suspects

The Yobe State Police Command has uncovered an illegal firearms fabrication site in Potiskum and arrested seven suspects, as part of renewed efforts to combat crime across the state.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the discovery of the factory followed a raid carried out on 2nd June, 2026, by operatives of the Potiskum Area Command.

The PPRO said a credible intelligence revealed that some blacksmiths were engaged in the illegal fabrication of dane guns and other firearms at Tasha Adua along Danchuwa Road, Potiskum, leading to the arrest of seven suspects.

According to him, items recovered during the operation include two fabricated pistols, 24 muzzle pipes, nine gun butts, four unserviceable dane guns, one filing machine, and one sharp cutlass.

“The suspects are currently undergoing thorough investigation with a view to identifying their collaborators, possible buyers, and the intended use of the fabricated firearms,” Abdulkarim said.

The Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, in the statement directed officers handling the case to intensify investigation, identify other illegal firearms fabrication centres in the area, and assess the level of security threat posed by such activities.

The Command also warned residents against allowing their premises to be used for unlawful activities, including the fabrication of dangerous weapons, and urged the public to report suspicious movements to the nearest police station or security agency.
