Gender equality: Give women 50% of leadership roles – UN’s Eyong to Nigerian politicians

The United Nations, UN Women Country Representative for Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong, has advocated for gender equality in governance, asserting that women should occupy half of the parliamentary seats.

Eyong made these remarks during an interview with Chikas Kumle, the executive director of the Women Development Monitoring Initiative (WDMI), focusing on the theme, ‘Representation: The Urgency of Now’.

She emphasized that women, who make up nearly 50 percent of Nigeria’s population, are entitled to equal representation in governance.

“The rules and regulations of this country should have mandated parity. We should not witness a parliament with less than 5 percent representation. We should not see a private sector with less than 50 percent. We should not have state houses of assembly with less than 50 percent. It should be a 50-50 split,” she stated.

“I hope that as we continue to present these arguments to our leaders, they will come to recognize this necessity.”

Eyong further asserted that equitable participation must go beyond mere numerical representation to encompass women with disabilities, widows, and those from various social backgrounds.

She warned that excluding certain segments of society from governance and development could result in future instability.

“Whenever you engage in politics or development while excluding specific groups, you are intentionally setting the stage for rebellion. Those individuals will seek their resources, spaces, and structures,” she remarked.

Eyong insisted that governance should be anchored in transparency, accountability, the rule of law, and participation, stressing that leadership must prioritize the common good over personal interests.

She linked the erosion of public trust in democracy across Africa to the failure of democratic systems to provide tangible benefits to citizens.

Eyong observed that many Africans, especially the youth and women, have grown disillusioned as democracy has not yielded the anticipated results.

According to her, women’s representation in leadership positions would help address pressing issues affecting citizens and accelerate development.

“If women are sitting at the table, women will make the difference. Women will cause democracy to bring the dividends, to bring the results,” she said.

“The GDP will grow. People’s lives will be improved because I believe women deliver human beings. Women know the pain of having a baby and taking care of a baby until it becomes a man or a woman.”

8 foreign nationals arrested for staging abduction, ransom fraud in Ogun

No fewer than eight foreign nationals have been arrested by operatives attached to the Ifo Division of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly faking a kidnap to extort ransom from their families abroad.

The suspects, seven men and one woman: are Zakaria Zawadogo, 34, from Burkina Faso; Cheik El-Mehdi, 23, from Mauritania; Suren Neta, 25, from Côte d’Ivoire; Koffi Breno, 36; and Gondo Treso, 32, both from Côte d’Ivoire.

Others include Kunuji Ezekiel, 27, from the Republic of Benin; Kougasi John from Côte d’Ivoire; and Hemue Blinsi, 30, also from Côte d’Ivoire.

DAILY POST gathered that they were arrested during an intelligence-led operation in Adiyan Town, Agbado Area of Ogun State, following a report received on June 6, 2026, that a 23-year-old Mauritanian national, Cheik El-Mehdi, had contacted his family abroad, claiming he had been kidnapped in Nigeria and demanding ransom for his release.

Shortly after, another suspect, Zakaria Zawadogo, allegedly reinforced the demand with threats that the victim would be killed if the ransom was not paid.

Upon receiving the information, officers led by CSP Olabisi Kamorudeen, the Divisional Police Officer, activated an intelligence-driven investigation, which led to the discovery of the suspects’ location.

Confirming the arrest on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, stated that uncovering the suspects’ location prevented what could have resulted in a successful cross-border financial crime.

Babaseyi noted that Zakaria Zawadogo was arrested and subsequently led detectives to the syndicate’s hideout, resulting in the arrest of Cheik El-Mehdi, Suren Neta and five others.

He said, “Technical intelligence reports revealed that the suspects were operating from a hideout in Adiyan Town, Agbado Area of Ogun State.

“All suspects were taken into custody, while the premises were secured and thoroughly searched in line with due process.”

According to him, preliminary findings revealed that the operation was a coordinated criminal enterprise involving the deliberate staging of a kidnapping scenario to defraud the victim’s family.

The police spokesman disclosed that one of the suspects, Suren Neta, allegedly lured Cheik El-Mehdi into Nigeria, while Zakaria coordinated the ransom demands and issued threats to compel payment.

“The purported victim was also found to have actively participated in the orchestration of the fake abduction. The principal suspects, Zakaria Zawadogo, Cheik El-Mehdi and Suren Neta, have all confessed to their involvement in the conspiracy, while further investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the syndicate’s operations and possible links to other transnational criminal networks,” he added.

Babaseyi stressed that the case highlighted the increasing sophistication of transnational criminal activities and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to proactive policing, intelligence gathering and sustained operations against organised crime.

He also reassured members of the public that Ogun State remains a hostile environment for criminal elements and that the command would continue to strengthen internal and cross-border collaboration to ensure public safety.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, particularly cases involving staged kidnappings or ransom demands.

Peter Okoye reacts as fan asks him to retire from music over age

Nigerian singer and half of the defunct P-Square duo, Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has reacted after a fan asked him to retire from music, citing his age as reason.

The fan with the X handle OloriOfOloris stated that Peter Okoye is approaching 50 and shouldn’t be doing Afrobeats music at his age.

She urged the 44-year-old music star to consider retirement.

Quoting a clip of Mr P’s music video, she wrote, “I don’t get why an almost 50 year old man is still singing like this. It’s okay to retire❤️.”

However, popular media personality Do2dtun countered her argument, stressing that

Some active international musicians such as Celine Dion, Shakira, Beyoncé, and Backstreet Boys are older than Mr P.

“Peter is 44 but you dimwits are so ageist that you don’t even know what you bring down in the name of clicks,” Do2dtun added.

Quoting Do2dtun’s post, Mr P claimed that those asking him to retire due to age are heartbroken fans of the defunct P-Square.

He described his critics as hypocrites who celebrate older musicians like Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown but demanded for his retirement despite being younger than them.

“After dem realize say all those narratives no hold water, dem come with another one:

‘Now he is too old to be singing and dancing.’

“Meanwhile, na the same people go celebrate and hype Usher, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown for doing exactly the same thing,” his post read partly.

    Zadok Yohanna

In an exclusive chat with THE WHISTLER, a FIFA licensed agent and CEO of Tabic Football Academy Prince Pascal Atuma revealed that the story of Zadok Yohanna, moving from the street of Kaduna to arriving on the adored grand tapestry of the English Premier League in a space of two years, tells a complete story of the Nigerian football where talent has never been the problem but the system and administration.

Prince Atuma described the move as a talent meeting opportunity and meritorious society. He expressed sadness that not even one NPFL club side or even the country’s U-17 scouts could see the potential in Zadok rather it was a foreign who saw the greatness, put his job on the line for him to move to AIK Stockholm who only polished him in a few months to become an asset worth over £20m.

He maintained that this should serve as a stack reminder of how much money Nigeria is losing due to lack of infrastructure for football and other sports talent development unlike the South American countries.

“You can imagine this whole money being paid to a club in Nigeria could by Brighton as against the sell-on fee his parent academy in Nigeria would receive.”

“Tell me what did AIK do that is special in just a few months, the major thing they did was to give him exposure through the media for the big clubs to see, because the talent, the skill were already there and that was why Chelsea and other top clubs wanted him at all cost”.

Zadok Yohanna began his football career at the Ikon Allah Football Academy in Nigeria before being signed by Swedish club AIK in 2025.

He rapidly established himself within the club’s structure and achieved his breakthrough in the first team squad during the 2026 season.

His incredibly outstanding performances and records attracted Chelsea and Newcastle but Brighton finally brought him to the Premier League. At the start of the 2026/2027 NPFL season, Nigerian fans will be watching Zadok adorn the colours of Brighton alongside Super Falcons goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie who is in the women’s team.
