2027: Funso Doherty to contest Lagos gov poll under ADC

    By Henry Obetta

Former Lagos governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Funso Doherty, has declared his intention to run for the Lagos State governorship seat on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, at the 2027 general elections.

He made the declaration on Friday at the Freedom Park Old Prison Ground with party members and supporters present.

Doherty said that he decided to vie for the Lagos governorship election because he observed that the state’s system that nurtured him was decaying and needed urgent fixing.

The governorship hopeful stressed the need for leadership with integrity, capacity, vision and people-centeredness.

According to him, Lagos State has energetic residents who are diligent but yet denied the right to modest living.

He said: “Even though Lagos, blessed as we are by the Almighty God, can have enough for all, today, it is being governed to offer a great deal for a very few and very little for most. This is what I have determined must change.”

Speaking on the current administration, he stated that the achievements of the ruling government were pale compared to what is possible with the vast resources of the state.
He stated: “The gleaming towers of banana island draw attention away from a harsh and depressing
reality of deprivation and lack in education, health, jobs, housing, water, power and so on for most citizens. This is despite trillions spent every year. Lagos State’s budget for 2026 is more than N4 trillion.
“For the past 26 years, we have been told that our mounting housing deficit doesn’t matter. We’ve been told that the anxiety parents feel about failing schools is an illusion.
“We have watched as our young men, instead of being given real opportunities, are systematically turned into tools for political violence. They are sold a false dream—that if they serve loyally, they too can one day rise to become powerful, but corrupt bosses.
“And when all else fails—when the schools crumble, when the floods wash away our life’s work, when our young people spend half their lives in gruelling traffic, even worse off when they’re robbed as the traffic grinds to a halt – we’ve been told that our problems are somebody else’s fault.”
Doherty urged members, supporters and party stakeholders to unite and tackle the inconsistencies in the education, healthcare and infrastructure sectors of the state in order to ensure convenient living for all residents.
He said: “So let us come together to set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed. Because we understand that real opportunities begin with investment in education.
“Real opportunity means investing — in strong, free, and quality early and basic education. Real opportunity means investing in technical and vocational education so that young people who choose not to go to university can gain meaningful employment and build dignified livelihoods.
“Let us finally, after all these years, tackle our healthcare crisis. Let us provide free healthcare for our children including drugs and ensure it is compassionate and properly funded – not as a campaign talking point, but as a governing priority. We can do that.
“Let us deliver convenient and affordable mass transit that connects our urban centres by road, rail and water. Because we know white elephant roads can never replace the solutions of mass transit.
“And above all else, let us be the ones that finally demand an honest government. Because every naira stolen from this state is a naira stolen from a child’s classroom, from a patient’s hospital bed, from a family’s future. Let us take the work we started, demanding accountability by combing through the budget, exposing wasteful spending and corruption.”
He also noted that the campaign was not for him but for the interest of Lagos residents and that the candidacy represented the people’s hopes and dreams.

Movement Restriction: UNIJOS SUG advises returning students to plan travel

    By Golok Nanmwa

Jos – The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has advised returning students to plan their movements carefully following a scheduled restriction of movement within Jos, Plateau State.

In a notice issued to students, the union said movement across the city would be restricted between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily, urging students to adjust their travel plans accordingly.

The notice, jointly signed by SUG President Younglan Talyoung Tongpus and Secretary Vincent Philip Yisa, advised students travelling from different parts of the country to ensure they arrive before the restriction period begins.

“Students are advised to move out early from their various locations to avoid being caught within the restriction period,” the statement said.

The union further recommended that students coming from distant locations consider breaking their journeys into two stages to ensure they reach Jos safely and on time.

According to the SUG, the advisory is necessary to help students avoid inconvenience and possible security challenges during the restriction.

The development comes as many students are expected to return to campus ahead of the new academic session.

The union urged students to comply fully with the directive and plan their movements accordingly.

“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” the statement added.

EPL: ‘He’s not good enough’ – Arteta told to drop Martinelli

Former Arsenal striker, Jay Bothroyd, has suggested to manager Mikel Arteta to drop Gabriel Martinelli and give Max Dowman more starting playing game-time.

Bothroyd spoke after Arsenal’s disappointing Premier League 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Martinelli failed to lead Arsenal to victory after Arteta opted to start him ahead of Dowman against Bournemouth.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bothroyd said: “When I looked at that starting team today, I was thinking to myself, ‘okay, Martinelli made an assist during the week. It was a great assist. But he has not been good enough this year.

“As far as I’m concerned, Max Dowman needs to start. I don’t care anymore.”

Despite the defeat to Bournemouth, Arsenal still sits at the top of the Premier League table ahead of second-position Manchester City.

Gov Bala Mohammed raises alarm over removal of rail infrastructure in Bauchi

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed concern over the removal of railway sleepers along the Alkaleri–Tafawa Balewa rail corridor, describing the development as troubling and potentially harmful to the state’s economic interests.

The governor reportedly came across contractors removing the sleepers on Saturday while travelling to Alkaleri Local Government Area on a condolence visit.

Worried by the activity, he called on relevant authorities and security agencies to urgently intervene and clarify the situation.

A visibly displeased Mohammed questioned the basis for dismantling the rail infrastructure, adding that such critical national assets should not be tampered with without proper consultation with the state government.

He immediately directed his Chief of Staff to write to the Federal Ministry of Transport, seeking clarification, while expressing concern that key infrastructure within the state was being dismantled without the knowledge of state authorities.

The governor noted that security personnel accompanying the contractors claimed they were acting on directives from the Federal Government.

However, he maintained that the explanation was insufficient, given the importance of the rail line to the transportation and distribution of agricultural produce in the affected areas.

Mohammed warned that removing the railway sleepers could worsen transportation challenges and negatively affect economic activities in communities that rely on the rail corridor for the movement of goods.

He also stressed the need for transparency and stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities, noting that decisions affecting critical infrastructure must consider their economic implications for local communities and livelihoods.

Further checks later indicated that the contractors were reportedly acting on a letter from the Federal Government authorising the removal of the rail tracks, although no reason was provided for the action.

Addressing residents of the affected communities, the governor assured that he would pursue the matter in Abuja, reiterating that railway transportation remains one of the most viable and cost-effective means of moving goods and services for ordinary citizens.

Mohammed also questioned whether the Federal Government had abandoned plans to rehabilitate railway infrastructure across the country, particularly in the North-East, which he said remains underserved in terms of critical infrastructure.

‘State-sponsored persecution’ – Turaki PDP faults unsealing of secretariat

The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has described the Police as partisan, describing their unsealing of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja as “state-sponsored persecution”.

In a statement on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the Turaki-led National Working Committee, NWC, said it would take legal steps over the Police action.

Recall that after months of legal tussles, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Wike-backed camp on March 9, invalidating the November 16 Ibadan convention endorsed by the governors.

Today, about five weeks after the judgement, the Mohammed-led PDP faction, backed by Wike, announced that the Police had unsealed both the Wadata Plaza and Legacy House national offices of the party in Abuja.

It is this action that the Turaki-led group called partisan on the part of the Police.

According to the statement, “they tampered with the res and that can render the judgment of the Court of Appeal nugatory, when it is eventually given. It is most shameful that those entrusted with protecting the law are those disobeying the law.

“While it is not surprising that the Police is acting in a clearly partisan manner, we were hopeful that they would act differently under the command of the new Inspector General of Police.

“From the inception of this imbroglio, the officers of the police force have consistently acted in a manner that leaves no one in doubt as to their support for the Wike-backed APC apologists and have continued to double down on their partisan interventions.

“As law-abiding citizens, we admonish our members to continue to maintain peace and not undertake any activity capable of breaching public peace, while we promise to take all necessary steps within the ambit of the law to protect the rights and privileges of the genuine members of the Peoples Democratic Party.

“The public should be assured that we are hopeful that soon this dark cloud of state-sponsored persecution and one-party compulsory drive will end and true democratic experience will return, in the interest of preserving the republic.

“Though pains may tarry in the night, joy and liberation will certainly come in the morning. Let us therefore bear this night with the hope that surely the morning is en route.”

  • Netanyahu says war succeeded in ‘crushing’ Iran nuclear, missile programmes

Netanyahu says war succeeded in ‘crushing’ Iran nuclear, missile programmes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran had succeeded in “crushing” the Islamic republic’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Netanyahu’s comments came as Iranian and US officials held two rounds of face-to-face talks in Pakistan in a bid to end the Middle East war, with a third round expected later on Saturday evening or Sunday, Iranian state television reported.

“We have succeeded in crushing the nuclear programme, and crushing the missile programme,” Netanyahu said in a televised statement, adding that the war against Tehran had also weakened Iran’s leadership and its regional allies.

“We have reached a situation in which Iran no longer has a single functioning enrichment facility.”

Netanyahu said the United States and Israel had prevented Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb by launching a war in June 2025, followed by the current campaign that began on February 28.

He said the latest war was launched after intelligence indicated that the now deceased Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei had sought to expand the country’s nuclear and missile programmes even after the June 2025 war.

“He sought to bury both missile production and nuclear production deep, deep beneath a mountain, in a way that even B-2 aircraft could not reach. Once again, we could not stand by. We acted,” Netanyahu said.

“Most of its missile production capacity has disappeared. They still have missiles, they still have stockpiles, but it is shrinking.”

He said there were “enormous achievements” in the war effort.

“They are reflected in this weakened regime, which is now even seeking a ceasefire,” he said.

Netanyahu added that, for decades, Iran’s leadership and its allies had threatened Israel.

“They wanted to strangle us, and (now) we are strangling them. They threatened us with annihilation, and now they are fighting for survival.”

    – Israelis rally against wars –

On Lebanon, Netanyahu said the country had approached Israel regarding a potential peace deal.

“In the past month, it has reached out several times to begin direct peace talks,” Netanyahu said.

“I have given my approval, but on two conditions: we want the dismantling of Hezbollah’s weapons, and we want a real peace agreement that will last for generations.”

On Friday, Lebanon’s presidency said that a meeting would be held with Israel in Washington next week to discuss a ceasefire in the Israel-Hezbollah war and the potential start of negotiations between the neighbours.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been clashing since March 2, two days after the start of the Iran war, following rocket fire by the Lebanese armed group at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Khamenei.

Since then, Israel has killed at least 2,020 people in Lebanon, including 248 women, 165 children and 85 medical and emergency personnel, according to the Lebanese health ministry.

Israel carried out its largest air attack this week on Lebanon since March 2, which it says left hundreds of Hezbollah fighters dead.

Even as Netanyahu spoke, around 800 Israeli protesters rallied in Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against the wars in Iran and Lebanon, accusing Netanyahu of attempting to derail the ceasefire with Iran.

“In Bibi, we don’t trust,” read one banner, using Netanyahu’s nickname, as protesters chanted: “No to endless wars, no to a government of death”.

Protester Martin Goldberg said Netanyahu was not in favour of a ceasefire with Iran.

“What happened immediately after the ceasefire in Iran, Israel launched one of its largest attacks in Lebanon, which in my opinion, was an attempt to try and sabotage the ceasefire with Iran,” the 61-year-old demonstrator told AFP.

“Israel is pretty openly saying that they’re not interested in a ceasefire in Iran, and they don’t want a peaceful solution in Iran.”

Northern female journalists decry gender-based harassment ahead of 2027 elections

Female journalists in Northern Nigeria have raised concerns over increasing cases of gender-based harassment, intimidation and violence encountered while covering elections, warning that the trend could undermine effective reporting in the 2027 general elections.

The concerns were raised on Saturday at a roundtable discussion organised by Mata Media under the Mata Media Foundation, held at the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) in Kano.

Facilitator of the session and Editor of Mata Media, Hafsat Bello, said the engagement was designed to provide a safe space for women journalists to share their experiences and prepare for election coverage.

“We wanted a safe environment where women journalists can openly talk about what they go through and how best to prepare for election reporting,” she said.

Representing the Mata Media Foundation, Fauxiya Kabir Tukur said the organisation remains committed to supporting journalists, especially women, through training and capacity-building ahead of the polls.

A journalist, Samira Zakirai, revealed that female journalists are often subjected to gender-based discrimination, harassment and intimidation that affect their work and mental wellbeing.

“Women journalists face constant harassment especially while covering elections. They face four threats: harassment, gender bias, discrimination and intimidation,” she said.

Another participant, Zainab Mai Agogo of Kakaki 24, alleged that some female reporters also experience inappropriate behaviour from political actors while on assignment, a situation she said discourages families from allowing women to pursue careers in journalism.

She said, “When women are covering elections, female journalists sometimes intimidate themselves by accusing those covering elections of things the journalists are not even doing.”

Hajiya Maimuna, who joined virtually from Niger State, said many female journalists avoid election coverage due to fear of violence and insecurity in volatile areas.

She noted growing threats of online harassment and the lack of legal action against perpetrators, describing it as a rising danger for women in the media space.

She called for regular safety training, stronger institutional support, and improved digital security awareness for journalists.
