Military airstrike mistakenly hits civilians during anti-insurgency operation in Borno

At least, 56 people, mostly traders are feared dead after a military airstrike hit a busy weekly market along the Borno–Yobe border.
The incident happened on Saturday at Jilli Market, located between Gubio in Borno State and Geidam in Yobe State.

Four fighter jets were said to be involved in the operation, which was reportedly aimed at suspected Boko Haram fighters.

Reports said the jets were tracking insurgents believed to have come to the market to collect money and supplies from traders. However, the strike missed its target and hit civilians instead.

About 14 to 20 injured victims were reportedly taken to the Specialist Hospital in Geidam for treatment.

A local councillor, Malam Lawan Zanna, also confirmed the attack.

He said people tried to escape when the jets began firing, but the strikes continued.

According to him, “more than 20 people were hospitalized,” and some of the injured later died, pushing the death toll higher.

The security adviser to the Yobe State governor, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (rtd), confirmed the incident but clarified that the market is actually located in Borno State.

As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Air Force has not released any official statement about the airstrike.

  • Trump Orders U.S. Navy Blockade Of Hormuz After Talks Collapse

Trump Orders U.S. Navy Blockade Of Hormuz After Talks Collapse

United States President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Navy to immediately begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz, in a dramatic and potentially far-reaching escalation following the collapse of high-stakes peace talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan on Sunday.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that he had instructed the Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that had paid a toll to Iran, warning that any Iranian who fires at American or peaceful vessels would face severe consequences.

The announcement came hours after the Islamabad talks, which had been billed as a historic first direct high-level engagement between the two nations in decades, ended without a breakthrough.

Trump acknowledged the meeting had gone reasonably well overall but said the one issue that truly mattered— Iran’s nuclear programme, remained unresolved.

Sources briefed on the talks said the breakdown centred on two core sticking points: Iran’s insistence on retaining control of the Strait of Hormuz and its firm refusal to surrender its enriched uranium stockpile.

Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf, who led the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, placed the blame squarely on Washington for the failure, saying American officials had failed to gain the trust of the Iranian side throughout the negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical economic chokepoints, handling roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments daily. Since the crisis began, Iran has effectively controlled access to the waterway, limiting the number of vessels permitted to cross and charging ships for passage.

The restrictions have sent energy prices soaring, with both Brent crude and WTI climbing past $115 per barrel at their peak, straining economies across Asia and Europe and disrupting global supply chains.

Sunday’s blockade order marks a dramatic escalation from earlier U.S. efforts in the region.

Just a day earlier on Saturday, the U.S. Navy stated they had began mine-clearing operations in the strait, with two guided-missile destroyers, USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy, transiting the waterway as part of a broader effort to clear mines CENTCOM alleges were laid by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Trump framed Sunday’s blockade as a direct response to what he described as world extortion, insisting that Iran would not be permitted to impose any form of restriction on international shipping passing through the strait.

The announcement also comes against the backdrop of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration on Saturday that Israel’s military campaign against Iran is far from over, ceasefire notwithstanding.

Netanyahu made clear that Israel reserves the right to continue pursuing its own military objectives independently of any U.S.-Iran diplomatic arrangement, adding further complexity to an already volatile regional picture.

Analysts warn that Trump’s blockade order could dramatically inflame tensions in the region, with the risk of direct military confrontation between U.S. and Iranian forces now significantly elevated.

Global energy markets are expected to react sharply when trading opens, with oil prices likely to spike further on news of the escalation.

Shipping companies and insurers have already been grappling with soaring risk premiums in the region for weeks.

Iran has not yet issued a formal government response to the blockade order, and the Pentagon had not commented at the time of this report.

NAF Airstrike Hits Borno-Yobe Border Market, Kills At Least 10

An airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force has killed at least 10 people and injured several others at a busy market along the Borno-Yobe border, local sources say.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at Dilli Market in Yobe State, near Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, during a military operation reportedly targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents believed to be operating in the area.

A source in Damaturu said the fighter jet was tracking suspected insurgents at the time of the strike but missed its intended target.

“At least 10 people were killed, while several others sustained injuries,” the source said.

Local sources also said insurgents routinely visit the market to collect levies from traders and gather supplies, suggesting the location had come under military surveillance.

The Yobe State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed awareness of the incident but said casualty figures were yet to be officially verified.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred at Dilli Market along the Borno-Yobe border, and we are currently gathering information on what transpired,” he said. “Security agencies are on the ground assessing the situation, while efforts are ongoing to ensure proper documentation and response, after which the public will be duly informed with accurate and official updates.”

Injured victims were receiving treatment at hospitals in Giedam and Damaturu as of press time.

The Nigerian Air Force had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

  • Trump orders US naval blockade of Strait of Hormuz

Trump orders US naval blockade of Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump on Sunday ordered a US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to Iran’s “unyielding” refusal to give up its nuclear ambitions during peace talks in Islamabad.

While acknowledging that the marathon negotiations in Pakistan had gone “well” and “most points were agreed to,” Trump said Tehran had refused to concede on the issue of its nuclear program.

“Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

“Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”

US Vice President JD Vance left Pakistan without a deal after weekend talks with a team led by Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf — the highest-level meeting between the two sides since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Tehran’s delegation also included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

“We leave here with a very simple proposal, a method of understanding that is our final and best offer. We’ll see if the Iranians accept it,” Vance told reporters.

In two lengthy posts on Truth Social, Trump slammed Iran for promising to open the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world’s crude oil passes, and “knowingly” failing to deliver.

“They say they put mines in the water, even though all of their Navy, and most of their ‘mine droppers,’ have been completely blown up. They may have done so, but what ship owner would want to take the chance?” Trump said.

Iran had effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz for weeks, since the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign against the Islamic republic more than six weeks ago.

On Saturday, the US military announced that two US warships had transited the strait at the start of a mine clearance operation.

EPL: Fabregas to replace Arteta as Arsenal manager

Senior officials at Arsenal have identified Como head coach, Cesc Fabregas, as the ideal candidate to replace Mikel Arteta.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Arteta could be in his last days as manager at the Emirates.

The Gunners began 2026 on a great note and in the running for four trophies.

But Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final and lost to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Arteta’s men had the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 12 points on Saturday, but ended up losing 2-1 to Bournemouth at home.

The result saw a lot of supporters walk out of the stadium before the full-time whistle, as the fanbase becomes apprehensive of the team bottling the title again.

The poor run of form is also being discussed in the boardroom and the hierarchy believes there might be need to change the manager if the team fails to win any silverware.

Former Arsenal captain, Fabregas, who is leading Como’s charge to qualify for Europe, is a heavy favourite for the role if Arteta leaves.
