Supreme Court Fixes April 22 For ADC Leadership Appeal

Nigeria’s Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed April 22, 2026, to hear an appeal arising from the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The appeal was filed by the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, challenging earlier court rulings linked to the ongoing dispute over the party’s leadership structure.

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, granted an accelerated hearing, underscoring the urgency of resolving the matter.

The case stems from a March 12 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which dismissed Mark’s earlier appeal tied to a prior ruling of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The dispute, involving figures such as Nafiu Bala and other party stakeholders, centers on who holds legitimate leadership control of the ADC, with multiple factions laying claim to key positions.

The Supreme Court has also directed all parties to file and exchange legal briefs within tight deadlines ahead of the April 22 hearing, signaling a fast-tracked resolution process.

The outcome of the case is expected to have major implications for the ADC’s stability and its positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as the party continues to attract high-profile political figures.

People can support candidates of their choice – Akpabio on Amupitan’s alleged digital footprint

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has reacted to allegations surrounding the past social media activities of an individual linked to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Joash Amupitan.

Akpabio claimed that Amupitan, just like everyone, was entitled to personal political preferences, saying he was just a mere lecturer.

Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of the new NRS building in Abuja, Akpabio addressed concerns over a resurfaced post allegedly attributed to Amupitan, which some critics have cited as evidence of partisanship.

According to him, the statement in question merely said “victory is sure” without specifying any political party, adding that it had been misinterpreted.

Akpabio also clarified that the individual was not the chairman of INEC at the time but a lecturer, stressing that private citizens are free to support any candidate or party of their choice.

He, however, noted that individuals occupying sensitive public offices must act in the interest of the entire country and maintain neutrality in their conduct.

DAILY POST reports that the remarks come amid calls by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and some Nigerians for the resignation of the INEC chairman over alleged partisanship linked to past posts on X.

Akpabio said: “And they said let us attack the people going to do the election. And they brought out a tweet they said the chairman of INEC said victory is sure.

“But he didn’t say victory is sure for APC. He did not say victory is sure for PDP, he just said victory is sure. And the man said that it’s manipulated. Nobody wants to hear. But for me, whether manipulated or not, he said victory is sure.

“He was not chairman of INEC. He was just a mere lecturer. Anybody can support anybody he wishes to, but when you are on a seat, you have to think of all the entire country and all the populace, and that’s what they are doing.”

GBV: Harmful culture of using women for debt settlement abolished in Cross River – Otive

A public affairs analyst and advocate against gender-based violence, Dr Otive Igbuzor, said an old harmful culture in Becheve communities of Obanluku Local Government Area of Cross River State tagged “Money Woman” has been abolished totally.

He disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

He described the development as a major breakthrough in ending the long-standing oppression of survivors of the “Money Woman” tradition in Becheve communities of Obanliku Local Government Area, Cross River State.

According to him, while the culture persisted, girls were given out in marriage not by choice but as instruments of financial obligation, denying them their rights to education, personal development, and autonomy.

He said the practice involved the use of young girls often at extremely vulnerable ages as a means of settling debts owed by their families.

“This was a bold and commendable step. It demonstrated that culture is not static and that harmful practices can be challenged and redefined from within.

“We initiated a renewed process of engagement with traditional rulers, clan heads, and community stakeholders.

“This process was deliberate, inclusive, and rooted in dialogue. It brought together traditional authorities, affected families, community members, and even men within these unions to openly examine the situation and agree on a way forward.

“The goal was not to impose a solution but to facilitate a community-owned resolution that would be fair, practical, and sustainable”, he said.

Mrs Ndukwe who is a retired school Head Mistress, said some persons who are claiming ownership of her building at No.62 Mission Hill Umuahia, have removed the doors, windows, fence of the property and also planning to demolish the house.

ADC convention: 3,000 delegates storm Abuja amid venue controversy

No fewer than 3,000 delegates have converged in Abuja for the ongoing national convention of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that delegates came in vibrant and diverse attires, arriving from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Security was visibly tight at the venue, with personnel conducting thorough checks before granting access, as accreditation got underway under the supervision of the accreditation sub-committee led by Senator Austin Akobundu.

Speaking at the event, the National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, explained that delegate allocation was based on the size of each state to ensure fair representation during the convention.

However, Idigo raised concerns over difficulties the party encountered in securing a suitable venue, alleging that multiple private operators declined to host the ADC due to external pressure and intimidation.

According to him, requests to use Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the National Stadium were either ignored or rejected without explanation.

He added that several hotels and event centres also turned down the party upon learning of its involvement, citing fears of possible repercussions.

“Even the Rainbow Event Centre initially attempted to cancel after alleged threats, but we insisted on proceeding since payments had already been made,” Idigo said.

He further decried what he described as an environment where businesses are unable to operate freely, warning that such interference could lead to financial losses for private operators.

The convention is expected to conclude the party’s congresses, ratify a new constitution, and set the stage for upcoming primary elections.

As of 11am it was reported that No INEC officials was cited at the venue.
