Otti Urges ANPA To Sustain Free Medical Missions In Abia

The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has appealed to the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas ( ANPA ), to sustain its free medical missions in the state to support ongoing efforts at improving healthcare services.

Otti made the appeal on Tuesday, at the official launch ceremony of the 2026 ANPA medical mission held at Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, aimed at expanding access to free, quality healthcare and strengthening the state’s health system through partnerships and capacity building.

“We sincerely appreciate what ANPA has been doing and we encourage you to keep returning to Abia to sustain this partnership for the benefit of our people,” Otti said.

The Governor, also revealed his plans to build a lasting, well-organised partnership with ANPA that uses technology to help more people get quality healthcare, no matter where they are.

Speaking at the event, The Governor, stated that his administration’s development agenda is anchored on improving the welfare of the people through sustained investment in critical sectors, particularly healthcare.

“At the heart of our development agenda is the total wellbeing of our people.

“Everything we have pursued over the past months is driven by the desire to improve their social and economic conditions,” he said.

He noted that healthcare and economic prosperity are closely linked, noting that investment in health is key to productivity and long-term growth.

“We do not separate the health of the people from the prosperity of the economy, they go hand in hand,” he noted.

He also stressed that infrastructure development must have direct impact on citizens lives.

“No matter how massive infrastructure projects are, they are meaningless if they do not improve the lives of the people,” he stated.

He commended ANPA for its continued partnership with the state, describing the organisation as a reliable partner in the transformation of the health sector.

“At the end of this exercise, many will have stories of lives saved, hope restored, and renewed confidence in humanity,” he said.

He disclosed that the administration has approved the recruitment of 851 healthcare workers, with 629 already deployed to various facilities to strengthen service delivery.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ogbonnaya Uche, stated that the mission aligns with ongoing healthcare reforms, including increased funding, infrastructure upgrades, and digital innovations.

He disclosed that the programme would provide free consultations, specialised surgeries, and health education, while also serving as a platform for capacity building and collaboration.

Also speaking, the national President of ANPA, Dr. Cliff Eke, described the initiative as a diaspora-driven effort to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“This mission goes beyond outreach, it focuses on skills transfer, training, and long-term support for the health sector,” Eke stated.

The Chairperson of the Medical Mission Committee, Dr. Uloaku Ukaegbu, revealed that previous missions treated over 15,000 residents and carried out more than 300 surgeries.

“The current exercise has already commenced at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Aba General Hospital, and is currently offering eye care, outpatient services, specialised surgeries, and youth-focused health programmes,” she stated.

Lagos plans more fire stations as safety infrastructure expands

The Lagos State Government has indicated plans to expand fire safety infrastructure across the state, following the addition of a new fire station as part of recently commissioned projects aimed at improving public safety and development.

According to a statement by the Lagos State government, the projects were unveiled during a two-day commissioning programme held from April 8 to April 9, 2026, under the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. The exercise was carried out on behalf of Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Godswill Akpabio.

Among the key projects delivered is the Tolu School Complex located in Olodi Apapa, Ajegunle, in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area. The complex comprises 36 schools, a modern fire station, and a stadium with 19 mini football pitches.

The inclusion of a fire station within the facility reflects the government’s efforts to protect lives and property while also supporting community growth.

A multi-agency complex named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was also commissioned during the event. The facility is expected to strengthen collaboration among emergency responders and other public service institutions in the state.

Speaking at the event, the Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, commended the government for its continued investment in safety infrastructure, noting that the new fire station will improve emergency response, especially in heavily populated areas.

“The additional fire station will significantly enhance emergency response coverage, particularly within densely populated communities,” Adeseye said.

Adeseye stated that with the addition of the Tolu Fire Station, the number of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) locations has increased to 25, making it the 11th fire station delivered by the current administration. He added that three more stations are at different stages of completion, with two already included in this year’s budget.

The development highlights the government’s continued focus on strengthening emergency services and building a safer, more resilient, and inclusive environment for residents across the state.

Exchange rate today, April 14, 2026: Naira continues appreciation against US dollar

The naira on Tuesday sustained an appreciation rally against the United States dollar at the official market.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s data showed that the naira strengthened on Tuesday to
N1,356.16 per dollar, up from N1,356.89 traded on Monday.

This means that on a day-to-day basis the local currency gained N0.73 against the dollar.

Meanwhile, at the black market, the naira remained flat at N1410 per dollar on Tuesday, the same rate it exchanged the previous day.

DAILY POST reports that in the past two days under review, the naira has slightly edged out the dollar at the currency market.

This comes despite the continued decline of the country’s foreign reserves, which dropped to $48.72 billion as of 13th April 2026 from $48.81 billion recorded last weekend.

2027: Don’t Derail ADC, Tambuwal Cautions Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Amaechi

A former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has urged caution among potential aspirants for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.

Addressing party leaders and delegates at the ADC national convention, Tambuwal, in a subtle admonition, emphasised the need for the aspirants to put the collective interest above their individual ambitions.

Tambuwal’s advisory is coming against the backdrop of sustained proxy war in the media by supporters of the aspirants over who among them is most qualified for the ADC ticket.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mr Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and Mr Rotimi Amaechi have openly indicated interest in the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.

The quartet was among key ADC stakeholders that Tambuwal addressed during the conversation, urging it to ensure that the party did not derail on account of conflicting individual ambitions.

“The next set of people I will appeal to are those sitting here. When we started, it was not possible. They could not come together.

“Today, in this hall, Vice President Atiku Abubakar is seated. Today, in this hall, Peter Obi is seated. Today, in this hall, Kwankwaso is seated, and today, Rotimi Amaechi is also seated, along with many other leaders.

“It is about unity of purpose and ambition for this country. It is not about an individual. It is about our vision and collective desire to rescue Nigeria.

“No sacrifice will be too great.
When that time comes, all of you are leaders. We will speak to you as your children, your brothers, and co-travellers, that it is about this country and not individual ambition,” Tambuwal said.

“We must all work together towards a common mission of rescuing this country. And the ADC is that platform. We must therefore work to preserve the unity of this platform and ensure we achieve that objective,” he said.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives said Nigeria was passing through interesting times, “where pseudo-democrats have found their way to power and are now manifestly exposing themselves.”

Tambuwal also sounded a note of caution to the judiciary and judicial officers, saying that recent developments in the judiciary are concerning.

“Let me remind those of you who are living today of Justice Ikpeme (Bassey) that was used by the government to truncate June 12. Let no judge or justice allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria,” he warned.

Bassey Ikpeme that Tambuwal referenced, was a judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja who delivered the controversial judgement stopping the conduct of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, won by the late Moshood Abiola.

Former military dictator, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, who annulled the election, cited Ikpeme’s judgement as one of the reasons he annulled the poll.

Tambuwal continued, “History is taking note of our roles as individuals. Our children and grandchildren are watching and looking up to us to serve this country.

“Those of you who are in privileged positions should be accountable and bear in mind that wherever you are writing your judgments or rulings, even if there is no individual by your side, God Almighty is watching over you.

“God Almighty will be the ultimate judge on the Day of Judgment. So be wary of those individuals who will be talking to you to influence you to undermine our judicial system, undermine our country, and undermine democracy.”
