Ahead of the 2027 general election, it is going to be a tough battle in the Delta North Senatorial Zone.

DAILY POST reports that three days ago, a former governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa announced his interest in the position.

The senatorial district is currently being represented by Senator Ned Nwoko who has been working assiduously for the creation of Anioma State.

Addressing journalists on Friday at the Asaba International Airport, Nwoko declared his intention to continue representing the people of the zone.

Both of them are members of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

However, whereas Nwoko has been a strong member of the broom party, Okowa joined alongside Delta State governor last year.

Nwoko has been a key APC leader in the state prior to the governor’s defection.

The Senator, accompanied by former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, pledged to work for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence in the President’s leadership and ongoing reforms at the national level.

They were received at the airport by a large crowd of supporters, which he said was a demonstration of the strong bond between him and the people of Delta North.

He further urged constituents to remain steadfast in their support for progressive governance, cautioning against a return to what he termed “old politics.”

On the issue of Anioma State creation, Nwoko aligned himself with the position of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, noting that Akpabio’s stance represents the official position on the matter.

Nwoko disclosed plans to upgrade the Federal College of Education, Asaba, into a federal university, describing the move as strategic to expanding access to higher education and fostering development in the region.

Ogun State has recorded a significant milestone in women empowerment as the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up (NFWP-SU) inaugurated Project Champions across four local government areas of the state.

DAILY POST reports that the state presently boasts 3,486 Women Affinity Groups (WAGs) comprising 83,664 women beneficiaries.

The initiative, supported by the World Bank, is being implemented in Ado-Odo/Ota, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode, and Sagamu, with a target of reaching 4,000 WAGs.

Speaking at the event, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Augusta Araba, described the inauguration of the Champions as a transformative movement aimed at expanding economic opportunities for unbanked women.

She stated that since the commencement of the programme in June 2023, the project has continued to reshape the socio-economic landscape of the State through financial inclusion, enterprise development, and community engagement.

Araba commended the Project Champions for their dedication and resilience, attributing the programme’s success to their active grassroots mobilization and advocacy, highlighting their role in facilitating the training and engagement of 440 ward facilitators equipped with skills in financial literacy, digital inclusion, and enterprise development, thereby breaking long-standing barriers to women’s economic participation.

The special assistant explained that the roles of the Champions remain pivotal to the success of the Scale-Up Project, noting that they serve as the link between the programme and grassroots communities, ensuring effective implementation, monitoring progress, and sustaining the momentum of women’s economic empowerment across the State.

Also speaking, the State Project Coordinator, Bolanle Fadairo, emphasized the need for commitment and discipline among the Project Champions, noting that the success of the initiative depends largely on their dedication to its core objectives.

She urged them to remain focused and avoid actions that could undermine the integrity of the programme, stressing that they are key drivers of change within their respective communities.

Fadairo further charged the Champions to see themselves as ambassadors of transformation, encouraging them to prioritize community development over personal interest.

Meanwhile, Head of Operations, NFWP-SU, Rasheed Ajibade, who took participants down memory lane with a reflection on the successful pilot phase of the project between 2020 and 2023 in Odeda, Ijebu North East, Yewa North, and Ikenne Local Government Areas.

He urged them to see themselves not just as participants, but as accountable drivers of change whose commitment would determine the future success of the programme.

In his presentation, the Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Advisor, NFWP-SU, Taiwo Fredrick, emphasized that “the sustainability of the initiative rests heavily on the Project Champions”. He outlined their responsibilities to include field monitoring, advocacy, promotion of Women Affinity Groups, and driving financial inclusion within their communities, while urging them to remain committed as agents of transformation.

Taiwo charged them to uphold transparency, remain accountable, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to deepen the impact of the initiative at the community level.

He further noted that beyond personal recognition, the Champions were expected to prioritize collective progress, ensuring that no woman is left behind in accessing economic opportunities.

Ogun NFWP inaugurates project champions, records 3,486 WAGs

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said President Bola Tinubu should be concerned about his re-election prospects in 2027.

The party argued that he would be facing “millions of Nigerians grappling with hardship” rather than just political opponents.

In a statement on Saturday by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party criticised recent remarks by the President.

Specifically, the party referenced a recent statement in which the President dismissed the ADC and mocked its recent convention, describing the comments as “unpresidential.”

“The President should not be ridiculing the opposition. He should be deeply concerned that the majority of Nigerians have rejected his government,” Abdullahi said.

“These are the reasons he should be worried, because the people are determined to vote him out.”

The party said Tinubu’s comments reflected “anxiety” rather than confidence, insisting that the administration appeared disconnected from the realities confronting citizens.

“What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control,” the statement said. “It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens.”

The ADC accused the President of focusing on politics at a time of worsening economic conditions and insecurity across the country.

“At a time when families are battling a historic cost-of-living crisis, food inflation, rising debt burdens and collapsing purchasing power, the President chose to mock the opposition instead of addressing the suffering of Nigerians,” it stated.

The party also referenced recent security concerns, noting that incidents such as the abduction of students highlight the gravity of the situation.

“This is the reality of today’s Nigeria—insecurity spreading deeper into everyday life while the government appears distracted,” the statement added.

Reacting to the President’s remark that the ADC held its convention “on the street,” the party dismissed the claim as misinformation.

“We did not hold our convention on the street. If that was the story supplied to the President by agents of disruption, then he has been misinformed,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC further alleged that democratic space was shrinking under the current administration, claiming that opposition parties were being denied access to public venues.

“No government before now had denied political parties fair access to public venues such as Eagle Square, a national civic ground that belongs to all Nigerians,” the party said.

On governance, the ADC accused the President of undermining the principle of separation of powers.

“The President cannot preach separation of powers while simultaneously assuming the role of interpreter of the law, political referee and commentator on judicial matters,” the statement read.

“He cannot be a President and a judge at the same time.”
It also criticised what it described as the weakening of democratic institutions, particularly the legislature, which it said had “too often appeared reduced to an extension of executive convenience.”

The party took a swipe at Tinubu’s recent overtures to supporters of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing them as politically motivated.

“After years of distancing himself from the late President and blaming him for every failure, it is hypocritical to suddenly make a U-turn because of the coming election. It is too late,” the ADC said.

The party maintained that the central issues facing the country remain economic hardship and insecurity.

“The issue before the country today is simple: hardship is rising, insecurity is worsening, debt is mounting, and hope is fading. No amount of political theatre can hide that truth,” it added.

Reaffirming its political stance, the ADC said it remains committed to offering Nigerians “a credible alternative anchored on competence, security, prosperity and democratic freedom.”
