BREAKING: Former Kano Governor, Shekarau dumps PDP

Former Kano State Governor and Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a strategic political realignment.

In a resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, Shekarau announced that his exit takes immediate effect.

“Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with effect from today,” he wrote.

The former minister said the decision followed extensive consultations within his political camp, pointing to an imminent shift to another party.

“This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group, to pursue our political career in a different political party,” Shekarau stated.

While expressing appreciation to party leadership at the ward level, he added: “I thank you for being a good leader, and pray that Allah will continue to guide you in your stewardship.”

The letter was also copied to the Kano State PDP Chairman and the PDP Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area, indicating formal notification across party structures.

  • 2027: LP Disowns Post Urging Obi, Kwankwaso To Leave ADC

2027: LP Disowns Post Urging Obi, Kwankwaso To Leave ADC

The Labour Party has distanced itself from viral social media posts calling on its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to return to its fold, describing the messages as fraudulent and unauthorised.

The rebuttal follows a series of posts circulated on X by an account bearing the party’s name, emblem and logo, urging both politicians to abandon the African Democratic Congress amid growing uncertainty over the party’s internal dynamics.

One of the posts, which featured images of Obi and Kwankwaso, read, “Dear @PeterObi @KwankwasoRM, our doors are open.”

The development comes against the backdrop of heightened political speculation over the future of both men, particularly amid concerns they may struggle to secure the ADC ticket following a controversial interview granted by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in recent days.

However, the leadership of the party under its Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, has firmly disowned the posts, insisting they did not emanate from its national secretariat.

The clarification was conveyed in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the chairman’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ken Asogwa, who maintained that the party is not currently operating any social media platforms.

He said, “The general public is strongly advised to disregard any information originating from the aforementioned fraudulent accounts. This includes a recent post falsely claiming that the Party is expecting the return of Mr Peter Obi and Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Such statements are entirely unauthorised and do not reflect the position of the Labour Party.

“These are the same accounts previously disowned by the Party in its February statement. Following that disclaimer, the operators deceptively altered both the account name and handle in a bid to continue misleading unsuspecting members of the public.”

Asogwa further clarified that the party’s official accounts — Labour Party-Nig on Facebook and LabourPartyNG on X – have remained dormant since the crisis that led to the removal of the former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the dissolution of the National Working Committee.

The party also announced that it has formally petitioned the Police to facilitate the recovery of its official X account (LabourPartyNG ) from the former Party leadership currently in control of it.

“The matter is receiving due attention, and individuals involved, including Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk, are cooperating with the Deputy Inspector General of Police at the Force Intelligence Department, where they are currently providing relevant information concerning their activities, including the unauthorised use of the Party’s social media platforms.

“Upon the conclusion of investigations and the successful recovery of these accounts, the public will be duly informed. In the meantime, the Labour Party emphasises that it does not operate any social media account for public communication.

“All official information is disseminated strictly through authorised press statements issued by the Office of the Interim National Chairman. Any change to this communication structure will be formally announced,” Asogwa stated.

  • Sule’s Successor Pick Divides APC As Al-Makura, Ex-IGP Blow Hot

Sule’s Successor Pick Divides APC As Al-Makura, Ex-IGP Blow Hot

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has been accused of dividing the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, a development stakeholders warn could lead to mass defections and the eventual collapse of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Stakeholders, including his predecessor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, and former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, warned that if Sule does not retrace his steps, the party risks losing the 2027 elections in the state.

Their warnings followed Sule’s endorsement and eventual announcement of the Senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Aliyu Ahmed Wadada, as his preferred successor in 2027.

The announcement was made during a meeting with political appointees and heads of government agencies at the Government House in Lafia on Thursday.

Senator Wadada had defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in mid-2025.

The announcement has continued to reverberate across the state, generating opposition and warnings that, while the governor has the right to support any candidate, the move was not only untimely but also made without consultation.

Leading political figures in the state have begun to restrategise, with some hoping to pitch their tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has witnessed unprecedented support in the North.

Over the weekend, Al-Makura, who is the North Central Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, spoke after a meeting with Adamu, who is also a governorship aspirant under the APC.

He described Sule’s pronouncement as premature, saying, “I was never consulted as a major stakeholder before the pronouncement of a preferred successor.

“While it may be the governor’s personal decision, it is rather too early. The electoral process is in stages, and we are still at the point where individuals are indicating interest,” he stated.

He explained that, “Since the process is yet to commence, whoever is his preferred candidate or successor, or whatever name you call it, is his choice. And he has every democratic right to wish to have someone he wants to vote for because he has one vote like each one of us.”

He added, “I think it is a little too early for such a preferred candidate to be taken to Mr. President at this stage. What is the hurry? Let us wait and ensure that we comply with the guidelines of the party.”

He, however, assured that “since we are embarking on direct primaries as directed by the party headquarters, we are going to abide by that, respect the rule of law, and ensure that the most qualified person emerges.

“We will also ensure that whoever emerges is someone who can secure the majority of votes from the people of Nasarawa State.”

Speculation has emerged that Al-Makura prefers Adamu and, being a former governor of the state, could galvanise APC members to vote for him during the direct primaries.

The Al-Makura camp alleged that Sule, having observed the ongoing mobilisation in favour of Adamu, moved swiftly to name a preferred successor in order to disrupt the plan.

Speaking during the meeting, Adamu lamented that while Sule had long taken sides with Senator Wadada, “we are not detached and we are not distracted. The people of Nasarawa State are the determining factor in this whole process.”

He emphasised that, “The person the governor said is his preferred candidate, as His Excellency the former governor noted, is his personal choice. The governor has the right to say his mind is with Mr. A or B.”

He stressed that, “Today his mind is with Senator Wadada. It is his right, but that should not manifest itself in the machinery of government.”

He further said that while Sule acted in his personal capacity, “calling on all government officials representing the people of Nasarawa State and compelling them to support Wadada is wrong.”

Adamu explained that, “Direct primaries mean one member, one vote. No governor, cabal, or caucus can decide for you. The party has spoken, and that decision stands. This is the APC we joined. This is the APC we will defend with everything we have.”

He warned, “Let there be no doubt anywhere: I am in this race to the very end. We are not spectators. We are contenders, and we are ready.”

He explained, “Our blueprint for a safer, more united, and more prosperous Nasarawa State is ready. When the campaign window opens, we will present our agenda on Security, Unity, and Development to every ward, every community, and every party member.”

He added, “We seek no shortcut and we will take no shortcut. We will submit to the rules of our party and to the sovereign verdict of our people. Nothing more. Nothing less.”

Nuclear weapon: ‘You can’t strip us of our rights’ – Iran President to Trump

Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian has claimed that US President Donald Trump has no grounds to deny Iran its nuclear rights.

He was quoted by the Iranian Student News Agency on Sunday, criticizing Trump and the United States’ efforts to hinder Iranian nuclear capabilities, as reported by Reuters.

“Trump asserts that Iran cannot exercise its nuclear rights but does not clarify the alleged offense. Who is he to deny a nation its rights?” Pezeshkian was reported as saying.

Recently, Trump stated that Iran has finally accepted one of the most difficult conditions in the negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

He suggested that, for this reason, the situation in Iran should be resolved ‘relatively soon’.

The US leader remarked that developments in Iran are moving “smoothly” and that it “should be coming to an end shortly”.

He addressed his supporters during an event in Las Vegas, saying, “The situation in Iran is progressing smoothly – we can act as we wish.”

The US president also indicated that a potential meeting between the United States and Iran could occur over the weekend, which adds to the optimism that the conflict in Iran may be approaching its conclusion.

Trump noted that Iran has agreed to return its enriched uranium and to refrain from pursuing nuclear weapons for a period exceeding 20 years.

“They have agreed to return the nuclear dust to us,” Trump remarked, referring to the uranium.

Iran’s nuclear activities were a contentious issue during discussions in Pakistan the previous weekend.

“We will keep an eye on the developments,” Trump stated at the White House, adding: “However, I am confident that we are very close to finalizing an agreement with Iran.”

We don’t operate any social media account – Nenadi-led Labour Party

Labour Party has reiterated that it does not currently operate any social media account.

The party’s leadership was reacting to what it described as a fraudulent X account operating under the name “LABOUR PARTY (LP)NIG” with the handle @LabourpartyNGR_, operated by Julius Abure and his camp.

The LP, in a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser, (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, said the account falsely claims to disseminate official information on behalf of the Party.

It said preliminary checks revealed that this was the same account previously disowned by the Party in its February statement.

The statement added, “Following that disclaimer, the operators deceptively altered both the account name and handle in a bid to continue misleading unsuspecting members of the public.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Labour Party states that its only known social media accounts, which are currently inactive, are: Facebook: Labour Party-Nig (approximately 12,000 followers)

    “X: LabourPartyNG (approximately 837,000 followers)”.

The Party said it has formally petitioned the Nigerian Police to facilitate the recovery of its official X account (LabourPartyNG) from the former Party leadership currently in control of it.

It added, “The matter is receiving due attention and individuals involved, including Barr. Julius Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk, are cooperating with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department, where they are currently providing relevant information concerning their activities, including the unauthorized use of the Party’s social media platforms.

Bala now NNPP National Chairman as Ajuji joins ADC

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has announce the election of Bala Yunusa Mohammed as its new National Chairman.

A statement signed by Ladipo Johnson, the party’s
National Publicity Secretary, described Bala as an astute administrator, who served as the party’s National Organizing Secretary before now.

The party said it believes its new Chairman brings to the office a wealth of experience, tactical brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to the party’s grassroots ideology.

The NNPP acknowledged the departure of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, its former Chairman who has resigned his appointment to join the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The statement added, “On behalf of our national leadership, the National Executive Committee, and our teeming members across the 36 states and the FCT, we thank Dr. Ajuji Ahmed for his dedicated service.

“We recognize the contributions he made during his tenure and sincerely wish him the very best in his future political endeavors.”

It said that these transition is coming at a critical juncture in national history.

It added, “Today, the Nigerian citizen is caught in the throes of unprecedented economic hardship, spiraling inflation, and a pervasive sense of insecurity that threatens the very fabric of our society.

“Furthermore, we are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, it has become evident that the opposition space is being targeted by, sponsored Internal Crises, calculated attempts to destabilize parties from within, purious Legal Challenges, the use of ‘judicial warfare’ to distract and drain the resources of credible alternatives to the status quo.”

The NNPP also cried out over what it called democratic erosion, where, according to the party, the voice of the people is increasingly being muffled by political subterfuge.

In electing Bala as its new National Chairman, the NNPP said it has chosen a leader who understands these “perilous times.”

It added, “Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man. Under the leadership of Honourable Bala, we are not just preparing for an election; we are preparing to salvage a nation.

“We have absolute confidence that our new Chairman will steer this great party through these turbulent waters with integrity and courage. His emergence signals a unified front against the forces of regression and a renewed vigor to offer Nigerians the governance they truly deserve.

“We call on all party faithful and well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the new leadership as we fortify our ranks.

“The journey to 2027 is a marathon, and the NNPP is now better positioned than ever to cross the finish line as the party of the people.”

  • How Rising Heat Is Killing Wheat Farming In Kano

How Rising Heat Is Killing Wheat Farming In Kano

Musa Abdullahi stretches through the uneven fields of his wheat farm in Kura, running back and forth to rub his fingers against the rock.

For more than three decades, he has been farming on his land, and recalled that the cold months turned these fields green and perfected into a rolling landscape, with harvest time devoted to stacking grain bags after finishing it.

That world feels distant now. Stunted, yellow and minuscule stalks appear before him but nothing seems to fix them.

With his fingers, he tosses a fistfull of pale, powdery soil into his mouth and drops it.

He whispered, “this crop requires cold weather,” but the temperature has risen.

The situation in Kura, an agricultural area located on the southern edge of Kano, is not due to bad luck or poor technique.

A visible manifestation of a slow-moving crisis is the assertion made by scientists and agricultural officers that climate change is slowly changing the conditions in northern Nigeria’s fragile wheat belt.

A farm fashioned to endure extreme coldness.

In tropical regions, wheat has never been a popular crop.

Unlike maize or sorghum, it needs to be kept cool to develop properly, especially during germination and flowering.

Dry Saharan winds that drop night temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius during the harmattan season in northern Nigeria resulted in a small window of opportunity for wheat farming to resume between November and February.

Before the heat set in, wheat will be able to germinate easily with firm stems and fill out grain heads under those conditions.

    That window is shrinking.

Throughout Nigeria, the Meteorological Agency has noted a steady increase in temperatures throughout the northern region over an extended period.

The average minimum night temperature in Kano during the 1980s and 1990s was between 13 and 15 degrees Celsius, but it has now risen to over 18 degrees, which is devastating for crops that are sensitive to cold weather.

This may seem like a small change. Wheat yields are estimated to decrease by approximately 6% for every one degree Celsius rise in average temperature, as per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Ibrahim Shehu, an agronomist who has researched how temperature changes can affect small-scale agriculture across the Sahel said “the
nights are warmer, the cold season is shorter. This is only thing that can disrupt wheat production in Kano.”

“We Used to Harvest Bags, Now It’s Losses.”

The seasonal decline has been observed by Zainab Bello, an agricultural extension officer who works with farmers in Kura and Bunkure.

She said, “the harmattan is getting shorter. It takes a cold stress period for the heat to develop.”

“If not there, you will have poor germination, weak stems, and low grain yield. The farmers are seeing exactly that.”

The human cost is clearly visible to those who are dependent on the crop.

At Garun Malam, Zainab Sani, 30, sits beside a modest wheat pile that is barely enough to load five sacks.

The same plot of her family’s farm yielded more than 20 bags five years ago.

She said: “Last year we harvested only 9 bags but this year it was just five.

“We had the option of eating wheat during the dry season.”

But Aisha and her husband are uncertain about whether to switch to rice or vegetables as a family.

She disclosed that the issue is that the knowledge of climate from inherited calendars and seasonal cues has become unreliable, leading to farmers following traditional practices instead.

This is unfortunate. “What has always been effective is no longer functional.”

To adapt to the climate, Kabiru Aminu, 66, has been increasing his irrigation routine in Kura, with the aim of reducing the surface temperature of the soil.

“It’s an imperfect solution. Water is scarce. The cost of diesel for the pumps is increasing and rising,” he said.

The unpredictable nature of the harmattan’s arrival has led farmers to push earlier into their planting schedules to avoid colds. What changes? The effectiveness of this method is infrequent.

According to Aminu, the timing has become unreliable. “If you plant a seed early, it may still experience heat.

“Late planting is not an option, as the cold window has already passed.”

    Local soil: A national issue

Kano’s farms are not the only ones affected by the implications.

Among Africa’s largest wheat importers, Nigeria spends billions of dollars annually on the grain.

THE WHISTLER documented that domestic production in northern states like Kano, Katsina and Jigawa has always met a fraction of the national demand, it still provides price stability and food security that millions of households depend on.

If the production base is destroyed by climate, Nigeria’s vulnerability to the volatile wheat markets of the global market would be further weakened due to unstable global wheat prices, as demonstrated by the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

Dr Shehu Musa, an agriculturalist in Bayero University Kano noted that “this is not a farming issue.”

He asserted that the issue of national food security is a concern.

“The lack of wheat production due to the climate has an adverse impact on bread prices and household stability.

The majority of solutions are not accessible to smallholder farmers.”

THE WHISTLER found out that the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre and other international research centers are actively engaged in breeding heat-tolerant wheat varieties that can withstand harsh climates.

The challenge of delivering improved seeds from research stations to farmers like Musa at scale is still present.

According to Zainab, the most pressing requirement for extension officers is access to information that can help farmers understand the changes and why their inherited seasons have disappeared.

Musa, at the edge of his field in Kura’s rear, is seen brushing away dust from his hands. His job involves planting, irrigating, waiting and adapting; it’s the way farmers do it.

As a farmer, he said: “I know this, gazing down at the field, praying for cold.

“It is necessary for the wheat to remain alive, and neither will we.”
