The Police Command in Ogun says it has foiled a truck hijacking incident and recovered a stolen DAF truck as well as a wooden-fabricated rifle in Ijebu-Imushin area of the state
The command disclosed this in a statement on Thursday in Abeokuta by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

According to the PPRO, the incident was reported in the early hours of Wednesday, following a distress call from a driver conveying motor spare parts.

He noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was intercepted by suspected hoodlums at Oke-Ado area of Ijebu North Local Government , where the truck was forcefully taken from him.

He added that detectives, in collaboration with highway patrol operatives, swiftly mobilised to the scene upon receiving the report, forcing the suspects to abandon the truck and flee.

“The prompt intervention of the police effectively thwarted the criminal operation and prevented the loss of property.

“The driver sustained a minor injury to his right ankle during the incident and was promptly treated with first aid,” he said.

According to Babaseyi, a thorough search of the recovered truck led to the discovery of a wooden-fabricated rifle wrapped with black tape, allegedly used by the suspects during the operation.

He said that efforts were ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing suspects for prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the swift response and professionalism of the operatives involved in the operation.

Ojajuni reassured residents of the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of road users and residents across the state.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Engr. Dr. Yakubu Muhammad Kingsly (YMK) has officially picked the presidential nomination form of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring his readiness to contest Nigeria’s highest office.
The nomination form was obtained on Thursday in Abuja at the party’s headquarters.

Speaking after receiving the nomination form, YMK said his desire to ensure that things are done in the right way in Nigeria, and that Nigerians enjoy a better living standard, influenced his decision to contest the race against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during the event, the Director-General of the YMK Campaign Organisation, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi Jibia, described the move as a demonstration of seriousness and commitment to rebuilding the country.

According to Jibia, the choice of the PRP was informed by the party’s ideology and long-standing commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians and the less privileged.

“We have shown the world today that we are the Peoples Redemption Party, and we are going to contest on the platform of the party,” he said.

The National Women Leader of YMK, Dr. Maryam Ringim, called on Nigerian women and party supporters nationwide to intensify grassroots mobilisation and membership registration ahead of the party primaries.

She said women remain critical stakeholders in political mobilisation and urged them to support the party’s candidate towards victory in the 2027 elections.

She assured supporters of the candidate’s commitment to running an inclusive administration that would prioritise women and youth empowerment if elected president.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has said there are no plans by Muslims to drive out Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking at the first triannual meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, in Abuja, Abubakar said Muslims would not remove Christians from Nigeria.

The Sultan said, “Today, as I stand here, I want to affirm that Muslims are not in a hurry and have no plans for anything, including the decimation of the Christian population in Nigeria. These are the only points, nothing else.

“We are in no position at all to take Christians out of Nigeria. The topic of health remains highly relevant, as shown by the connection to terms like health, physical activity, mental health, depression, and rehabilitation.”

The monarch harped on the need for christians and muslims to coexist in the country.

“Let us get the narrative right; it is not about religion. Let us stop bringing religion into it. Let’s refer to them by their true identity: criminals, not specifically Muslim criminals, not Muslim terrorists, not Muslim bandits.

“Let’s refer to them by their true identity: criminals, not Muslim criminals, not Muslim terrorists, not Muslim bandits. Even if a person says they are Muslim, their actions are not in line with Islam.”

No plans by Muslims to drive out Christians from Nigeria – Sultan of Sokoto

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Daniel Okoh, has described religious literacy as an essential tool for national cohesion, especially in a diverse country like Nigeria.

Okoh, who co-chairs the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), spoke on Wednesday alongside the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. The statement came at the first Triennial Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja. He said Nigeria’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity should be seen as a source of strength rather than division.

According to him, “Religious literacy is not merely the academic understanding of doctrines or rituals. It is the cultivation of awareness, sensitivity and respect for the beliefs and practices of others.”

He opined that misunderstanding and manipulation of religion often fuel division, conflict and mistrust, stressing the need to mainstream religious literacy into schools, public discourse and community engagements to counter misinformation, hate speech and divisive rhetoric.

According to Okoh, places of worship must become centres of enlightenment, where messages of peace, unity and responsible citizenship are consistently emphasised. He called for stronger collaboration among faith communities, civil society groups and the media to promote peaceful coexistence and national unity.

He noted that NIREC had, over the years, served as an important platform for dialogue, conflict resolution and mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims, saying that they have demonstrated that despite their religious differences, they share common values of peace, justice, dignity of human life and the well-being of the nation.

The CAN president reaffirmed the commitment of the Christian body to working with Muslims and other stakeholders to build a nation where all citizens feel safe, valued and respected regardless of their faith.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, however, dismissed claims of planned Islamisation of Nigeria, saying that Muslims were not planning to decimate the Christian population in the country.

According to him, much of the violence often described as religious is being misunderstood, deepening suspicion and mistrust.

The Sultan said, “Today, as I stand here, I want to affirm that Muslims are not in a hurry and are not planning anything like decimating the population of Christians in Nigeria. We are not in any position whatsoever to remove Christians from Nigeria. No, it is not possible.”

Religious literacy essential for national cohesion – CAN President, Okoh

As part of follow-up efforts to the Federal Government’s approval for the establishment of a national aircraft leasing company to support domestic airlines, a delegation from Nigeria’s aviation sector has secured deals with Airbus and other aviation institutions in France.

The delegation, led by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, visited France to explore opportunities for collaboration, capacity development, and aircraft acquisition.

Members of the delegation included officials from the Ministry of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and stakeholders from the public and private aviation sectors, including a seven-man delegation from Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (IBUAM) and 7Star Global Hangar.

The delegation toured Airbus’ narrow-body and wide-body aircraft assembly plants, as well as helicopter assembly facilities in Toulouse and Marseille, where Airbus executives showcased some of the latest jet and helicopter technologies.

The company also expressed interest in expanding investment opportunities in Nigeria and the wider West African aviation market.

During the visit, the minister secured opportunities for IBUAM and other Nigerian institutions to collaborate with Airbus in the areas of student exchange programmes and capacity development.

An understanding was also reached with Airbus to facilitate partnerships and create a platform through which Nigerian airlines could access new aircraft using a sovereign guarantee framework approved by the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Recall that Ibom Air had earlier received two aircraft through the current effort, expecting to receive two more brand new aircraft to be delivered to the airline soon.

The Managing Director of Ibom Air, Mr George Uriesi expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government and Airbus for the collaboration.

IBUAM also held discussions with École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile (ENAC), one of Europe’s leading aerospace universities and a major supplier of technical manpower to Airbus, for a strategic partnership.

Commending the minister, IBUAM founding Chancellor, Isaac Balami, praised the initiative and efforts aimed at repositioning the aviation sector.

“With people like the Honourable Minister in the saddle, we are sure of a better industry,” he said.

Balami University was among the 11 private universities recently approved and accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The institution has since commenced academic activities, admitting students from Nigeria and the diaspora into its programmes, even as admission remains open through the Joint Matriculation and Admission Board, JAMB.

Recall that the Federal Government had recently approved the establishment of a national aircraft leasing company to support domestic airlines with access to modern fleets. The approval came during a meeting of the Federal Executive Council. Keyamo had described the initiative as a major shift in how Nigerian carriers will acquire and finance aircraft.

At the end of the working visit, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mahmud Adamu, while delivering his vote of thanks, commended the Nigerian government for creating opportunities to improve the sector. He also praised Airbus for its willingness to partner with Nigeria’s aviation industry.

After FG approval of aircraft leasing company, Keyamo seals landmark Airbus deal in France

The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, on a 12 count charge of fraud and money laundering involving approximately N33.8bn.

Justice James Omotosho, in a judgment delivered on Thursday, May 7, 2026, ruled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) proved the former minister’s culpability beyond reasonable doubt.

Mamman, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2019 to 2021, was accused of conspiring with ministry officials and others to divert funds meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla Hydroelectric Power projects.

The court found that he made cash payments, including $655,700, estimated at about N200m, for a landed property in Abuja in violation of money laundering laws, with the funds allegedly routed through Bureau de Change operators.

Justice Omotosho criticised the former minister during the ruling, saying that instead of focusing on improving Nigeria’s power supply, Mamman allegedly enriched himself at the expense of citizens.

“Little wonder that Nigerians have remained in darkness till today,” the judge said.

The defendant was absent from court during the judgment. His lawyer told the court that Mamman’s whereabouts were unknown, claiming he was ill. The judge subsequently deferred sentencing, while the EFCC applied for a warrant of arrest.

Mamman was arrested in 2021 and formally arraigned in July 2024. During the trial, the EFCC presented 17 witnesses and 43 exhibits in support of its case.

He had earlier purchased nomination forms to contest the 2027 governorship election in Taraba State under the All Progressives Congress.

The conviction adds to ongoing anti corruption efforts targeting former public officials accused of diverting funds meant for critical infrastructure projects.

Further updates on sentencing and possible appeals are expected once the defendant appears in court.

The National Park Service, NPS, has deployed 42 additional volunteer community rangers to strengthen security and conservation efforts at the Gashaka Gumti National Park located across Taraba and Adamawa states.

Speaking during the passing-out parade of the rangers in Serti, headquarters of Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba state on Tuesday, the Conservator-General of the NPS, Ibrahim Goni, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to partnerships aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods across the country.

Represented by George Kagon, Goni said the recruitment initiative was designed to address manpower shortages caused by retirements and other operational losses within the park service.

“By recruiting dedicated youths from host communities, we are not only strengthening park protection but also fostering a sense of shared ownership,” he said.

He commended President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, for their support to the service, while also appreciating Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas and his Adamawa counterpart, Ahmadu Fintiri, for creating an enabling environment for the management of the park.

According to him, the newly recruited rangers underwent intensive training in patrol tactics, wildlife tracking, GPS usage, operational planning, and legal procedures to prepare them for field operations.

Also speaking, the Country Manager of the Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation, Nacha Geoffrey, described Gashaka Gumti as a critical ecological asset and an important watershed for the River Benue that supports millions of Nigerians.

Geoffrey said the deployment marked another major step towards tackling environmental degradation and insecurity threatening the park.

“They are frontline guardians of this vast wilderness and a bridge between conservation authorities and host communities,” he said of the new rangers.

He explained that the recruitment exercise, the fourth since the programme began in 2021, forms part of the strategic partnership between the NPS and ANI Foundation aimed at restoring the park’s ecological integrity and strengthening community participation in conservation efforts.

Geoffrey identified illegal mining, logging, livestock encroachment, and poaching as some of the major threats facing the park, noting that the rangers would play key roles in patrol operations, community engagement, and protection of endangered wildlife species including chimpanzees and leopards.

Despite the rugged terrain of the park, including areas such as Chappal Waddi, he assured the rangers of continued institutional support through the provision of modern equipment, aerial surveillance, and training in first aid and human rights.

Also speaking, the Conservator of the park, D.A. Hamman, said the recruits had received training in conservation law, wildlife monitoring, first aid, and community relations.

“They have walked the ridgelines, tracked the streams, and learned to read the land. They understand that this park is not just forest and mountains, but a vital resource for communities and future generations,” Hamman said.

Traditional rulers from Gashaka, the Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State, and Ganye in Adamawa State commended the initiative, saying improved security had already enabled displaced farmers to return to their communities.

Speaking on behalf of the monarchs, the Lamdo of Gashaka, Alhaji Zuberu Hammagbdo, praised ANI Foundation for its interventions in education, women empowerment, livestock vaccination, and youth development.

“Thousands of cattle have been vaccinated by them,” he said, adding that many of the newly trained rangers were drawn from host communities.
Similarly, the Emir of Ganye, Alhaji Umaru Adamu Sanda, said ANI’s interventions had helped reduce youth unemployment and criminal activities in communities within his emirate.

Chairman of Gashaka Local Government Area, Umar Yusuf, described ANI’s presence as a blessing to both Gashaka and neighbouring Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State, assuring the organisation of continued support.

Some of the newly deployed rangers, including Victor and Sadiq, pledged to protect the park and preserve its resources for future generations.

42 community rangers deployed to boost security at Gashaka Gumti National Park

The Lagos State Government has introduced dedicated security tip lines to enable residents report security threats and share credible information through text messages, photographs and videos.

The initiative was announced on Thursday by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve public participation in security monitoring across the state.

Details of the development were shared in a statement posted on X by Ridwan Ajetunmobi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to the statement, the move is aimed at responding to emerging security challenges by expanding channels through which residents can relay information to authorities.

“To adapt to evolving security challenges, the Lagos State Government has strengthened its intelligence gathering efforts, broadening public access to reporting security concerns in their neighbourhoods,” the statement read.

It added that the LSSTF had introduced dedicated Security Tip Lines through which residents can forward relevant information for government action.

The statement explained that the platform is strictly messaging-based and does not support voice calls. Residents are expected to submit security-related reports using text, pictures and video recordings.

The designated tip lines are 0911 019 5555 and 0916 201 1179.

According to the LSSTF, the initiative is designed to improve collaboration between residents and government agencies by encouraging the flow of actionable intelligence while ensuring confidentiality and professionalism.

“Through these platforms, individuals can submit information, photographs, and video recordings relating to security concerns within their communities,” the statement added.

The government further noted that the initiative leverages technology and community participation to improve situational awareness and support timely decision-making by security agencies.
