    A Festival, A City, A Continuum

Culture in southwest Nigeria is shifting from memory and ceremony into something more active, organised, shared, and increasingly tied to economic value.

In Ibadan, that shift is taking shape in ways that are both grounded and forward-looking.

The city, long defined by its seven iconic hills and layered histories, is drawing on its traditions and scale to rework how culture is lived, shared, and extended.

The 2026 edition of the Ibadan Cultural Festival, also known as the Oke Ibadan Festival, sits at the centre of this movement.

Organised by the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, it unfolded over three weeks, not as a loose sequence of events but as a structured gathering where heritage meets enterprise, and where culture is both preserved and put to work.

Across the city, the effects were visible. From hilltop neighbourhoods to older quarters below, there was a steady rise in activity.

Hotels received more guests, transport operators saw increased demand, and local markets, artisans, and small businesses recorded stronger patronage.

Diasporans returned, drawn by memory and participation.

The city moved across spaces, across communities, creating circulation that carried both meaning and value.

The festival’s design reflects this intent. Its programme covered culture, community, and enterprise: the Ibadan Conference and vocational programmes; community visits and historical tours tracing parts of the city’s geography; youth-focused events, stage plays, and sports competitions; education programmes and a business dinner.

Alongside these, charity visits and medical outreach extended their social reach, while the grand finale anchored the experience in tradition.

Taken together, the festival created pathways, bringing people into the city, moving them through it, and opening spaces for interaction, exchange, and renewal.

Chief Kola Karim, Chairman of Shoreline Group and Agbaoye of Ibadanland, frames the festival as both a cultural expression and economic platform.

“The festival is a celebration of the deep roots of our culture and a platform for driving economic activity in Ibadanland,” he said.

“It reminds us of who we are and reinforces our responsibility to preserve our heritage, while also adding economic value.”

He points to partnerships as part of that effort. Speaking as Chairman of the grand finale, Chief Karim added, “Our partnership with First City Monument Bank (FCMB) is an opportunity to build together, weaving culture and tradition to benefit Ibadan and Nigeria.

The next edition will broaden inclusion and deepen engagement.”

Ajeniyi Ajewole, President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, draws attention to the wider ripple effects.

“The festival drives tourism, supports local businesses, and creates an opportunity for Ibadan indigenes in the diaspora to return, reconnect, and contribute to the city’s growth,” he said.

For Chief Bayo Oyero, the festival’s longevity speaks to its deeper role within the city.

“Ibadan Cultural Festival is far more than a celebration. It is the heartbeat of our heritage, a bridge connecting our past to our present and future,” he said.

At the policy level, Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Musibau Babatunde, Secretary to the Oyo State Government, signalled continued support.

“Ibadan has remained a beacon of culture and tradition because of the unity among its people.

We will continue to create opportunities that will elevate the festival to greater heights,” he said.

Ibadan’s strength lies in its authenticity. Its cultural assets—lineage systems, traditional institutions, and indigenous communities—are lived realities, shaped over time across its hills and settlements.

The homage paid to the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, Arusa I, during the festival reflects that continuity.

This foundation opens into wider possibilities. The city’s landscape and heritage base position it for cultural tourism, from heritage trails to community-based experiences and local craft economies.

What is emerging is not a departure from tradition, but a reorganisation of it—one that connects memory with movement, and identity with participation.

The 2026 festival stands as a marker of this shift. In Ibadan, culture is not held in place; it moves across its hills, through its people, and into new forms of expression and value.

Turkey: His behaviour has changed, he gets angry – Engin tells Galatasaray to sell Osimhen

Former Beşiktaş midfielder, Sinan Engin, has insisted that the behaviour of Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, has changed.

Engin said this while urging Galatasaray to sell the Nigeria international if they receive an offer of 120 million Euros from Real Madrid or Bayern Munich for his signature in the summer transfer window.

Speaking on the Asist Analiz YouTube channel, the 61-year-old also insisted that Osimhen gets angry, adding that he is not behaving as he used to when he first joined the club on loan from Napoli.

“If clubs like Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are making offers around 120 million Euros, or even more, then I’m in favor of selling Osimhen,” Engin said.

“We need to have a detailed conversation with Osimhen. There have been changes in his behavior. He’s not performing or behaving like he used to.

“His behavior within the team is important. When Yunus Akgün gets the ball, he tries to pass it to Osimhen because Osimhen gets angry.

“Sometimes, even when there’s a more suitable teammate, he still plays to Osimhen and can’t pass.

“These kinds of things are problematic. Osimhen is useful to Galatasaray, but he was even more useful during his loan spell.”

    2027: Ex-Nasarawa Account-General picks guber nomination form

A former Accountant-General of Nasarawa State, Dr Zakka Yakubu, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election, pledging to run an inclusive administration anchored on a people’s budget if elected.

Yakubu made the declaration on Sunday during a rally in Akwanga Local Government Area, where he formally announced his intention to contest the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to Yakubu, his administration would ensure that communities determine their most pressing needs before projects are captured in the budget.

“People’s budget means that councillors will go to their wards and ask the people what they want and it will form part of the budget.

“Members of the House of Assembly will also engage their constituencies to know their priorities.

“If people need support in the health sector and the government is busy constructing roads, then there is a mismatch. Some communities need schools and the government may be doing something entirely different. That is not good,” he said.

Yakubu said that his administration would avoid embarking on “white elephant projects” and instead focus on interventions that directly improve the welfare of citizens.

“When you know the problems of the people, you will solve them according to what they want. This type of budget brings faster development because it focuses on the exact needs of the people,” he added.

Yakubu thanked his supporters for their confidence in him and promised to prioritise community-driven development projects.

How Four Kidnapped Children Were Rescued By Lagos Police

Four children kidnapped from the Ijesha-Tedo area of Lagos State have been rescued by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following a late-night patrol operation at Alafia Bus Terminal in the Coker-Orile area of the state.

The Lagos State Police Command disclosed that the children were rescued on May 8, 2026, at about 11:40 p.m., after officers on routine patrol noticed suspicious movement involving an unidentified woman and four children preparing to board a luxury bus leaving Lagos.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, the woman abandoned the children and fled immediately after sighting the police patrol team.

Police said the quick reaction of the officers prevented the children from being moved out of Lagos under the cover of darkness.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the children had earlier been kidnapped from the Ijesha-Tedo area of Lagos State and were about to be moved out of the State under the cover of night to an unknown destination before the timely intervention of the Police,” the statement said.

Following the rescue, the children were taken into protective custody while authorities began efforts to trace their parents and relatives.

The police later confirmed that all four children had been safely reunited with their families.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, commended the alertness and professionalism of the patrol officers involved in the operation.

He also reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to tackling crimes against children and protecting vulnerable persons across the state.

The police boss urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities involving children to security agencies.

Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect and identify possible accomplices connected to the alleged child trafficking operation.

ABSU student accuses police of assault at Uturu checkpoint

An Abia State University student has alleged that he and others were assaulted by police officers at a checkpoint along Uturu Road on Saturday afternoon.

The student, identified as Buddy jnr on X, shared a video of the checkpoint.

According to him, the officers, who allegedly had no name tags, stopped the vehicle he was travelling in, questioned passengers and escalated the encounter into violence.

He said “Earlier today at about 2:31pm along Uturu Road near Abia State University (ABSU), I experienced one of the most traumatizing moments of my life.

“I boarded a mini bus to get an item back to my lodge when some policemen without name tags stopped our vehicle at a checkpoint.

“They ordered me to step down, which I peacefully did. Immediately, they collected another passenger’s phone and began interrogating him aggressively about what he does for a living.

“Moments later, one of them turned to me and asked why I was using 3 phones. I calmly explained to them that I am a student and that the phones were bought with my hard-earned money. Instead of listening, they dragged me, my brother, and another passenger into a nearby bush and started harassing us for absolutely no reason.

“Before we knew what was happening, more officers joined them and they began beating us mercilessly like criminals, even though we were just students who came to ABSU to study and build our future.

“My brother and I sustained serious injuries during the assault. My ear is currently blocked, I can barely hear properly, and it has been bleeding because of the torture we faced in the hands of these officers…my phone screen also got broken.

“The most painful part was the constant threats they made. They said they could shoot us and nothing would happen. They also said they could make sure we never graduate from school.

“Imagine hearing such terrifying words from the same people meant to protect citizens. My only “crime” was owning 3 phones.

“ABSU students are no longer feeling safe. Police harassment, intimidation, and extortion around Uturu are becoming unbearable. Students are living in fear every day. We came here for education, not to be brutalized and treated like criminals for no reason @PoliceNG.”

The police have reportedly commenced an investigation, with the Complaint Response Unit acknowledging the complaint with a brief statement on X, saying, “Alleged officers from #Uturu Division have been identified, disarmed & detained. @abiapolice_NG to release an official statement on the viral video.”

Truck Driver Apprehended After Killing Pedestrian, Motorcyclist In Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has apprehended the driver of a heavily-loaded bucket truck following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist along the Badagry Expressway in Lagos.

The tragic incident occurred over the weekend at the Iyana-Iba Flyover inward the main gate of Lagos State University on the main carriageway of the expressway.

According to preliminary investigations, the truck driver was reportedly speeding from Volkswagen inward Badagry when he knocked down a pedestrian. Witnesses said the driver failed to stop after the initial impact and continued driving along the corridor.

In a statement on Sunday, LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, said that in an attempt to stop the fleeing truck driver, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another sympathiser, reportedly chased after the vehicle. However, the truck later rammed into the motorcycle during the pursuit, killing the rider instantly while the second occupant escaped unhurt.

“Preliminary security findings revealed that the fully-loaded bucket truck was reportedly travelling on a top speed from Volkswagen inward Badagry when the driver fatally knocked down an innocent pedestrian. Rather than bringing the vehicle to an immediate halt after the initial impact, the truck driver recklessly continued his movement along the corridor,” the statement read.

“In a courageous yet tragic attempt to intercept the fleeing vehicle, a motorcyclist, accompanied by another sympathizer, pursued the truck with the intention of compelling the driver to stop and face the consequences of his actions. However, in a shocking turn of events, the truck driver rammed violently into the motorcycle during the pursuit, resulting in the instantaneous death of the motorcyclist, while the accompanying sympathizer miraculously escaped unhurt.”

Operatives of LASTMA’s Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team, who were on routine overnight traffic monitoring and emergency response duties along the Badagry Expressway, quickly arrived at the scene to rescue victims and evacuate the bodies.

The agency disclosed that the deceased motorcyclist’s body was trapped beneath the truck’s front tyre before it was eventually evacuated.

The truck driver was immediately arrested by LASTMA officials and handed over to security operatives attached to the PPL Police Post, Okokomaiko, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further investigation and legal action.

Authorities also confirmed that the remains of the pedestrian were released to family members who arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident.

Both the truck and the damaged motorcycle involved in the crash were later moved to the police post pending the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and described the tragedy as another consequence of reckless driving by some articulated vehicle operators.

He urged truck drivers and other motorists to obey speed regulations and exercise caution while using the roads in order to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of lives.

Bakare-Oki further reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to strengthening traffic enforcement, surveillance operations, emergency rescue services and collaboration with other safety agencies to improve road safety across Lagos State.

  • NAHCO Seeks Shareholders’ Approval To Raise Share Capital To N1.11bn

NAHCO Seeks Shareholders’ Approval To Raise Share Capital To N1.11bn

Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO) has concluded plans to seek shareholders’ approval to increase its share capital from N974.53m to N1.11bn as part of measures aimed at strengthening the company’s capital base and rewarding investors through a bonus share issuance.

The proposal will be presented to shareholders during the company’s 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM), where approval will also be sought for the creation of 278.44 million additional ordinary shares and the distribution of bonus shares to existing shareholders.

According to the notice of AGM, the proposed increase in share capital will raise the company’s issued share capital from N974,531,250 divided into 1.949 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to N1.11bn divided into 2.227 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each.

The increase will be achieved through the creation of an additional 278,437,500 ordinary shares of 50 kobo each, which will rank pari-passu with the company’s existing ordinary shares.

As part of the restructuring plan, the board is recommending the transfer of N139.22m from the company’s retained earnings or reserve accounts into the share capital account to facilitate the bonus share issuance.

Under the proposed arrangement, shareholders whose names appear in the company’s Register of Members as of the close of business on May 1, 2026, will receive one new ordinary share for every seven existing shares held.

The company stated that the bonus shares would be fully paid and would rank equally with existing shares in all respects.

NAHCO also noted that the shares would be treated as capital rather than income for shareholders.

In addition, shareholders will be asked to authorise the company to round down fractional entitlements resulting from the bonus share allotment to the nearest whole share or zero, depending on the board’s discretion.

The aviation handling company is also seeking approval to amend Clause 6 of its Memorandum of Association to reflect the new share capital structure following the proposed increase.

If approved, the amended clause will state that the company’s share capital stands at N1.11bn divided into 2.227 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each, with powers reserved for future capital increases and share classification adjustments where necessary.

Furthermore, shareholders will consider a resolution empowering the directors to execute all agreements, regulatory filings, and related documentation required to implement the capital restructuring and bonus share programme without returning to shareholders for additional approvals.

The proposed capital increase and bonus share issuance are expected to enhance shareholder value, improve market liquidity of the company’s shares, and reinforce NAHCO’s long-term growth strategy within Nigeria’s aviation and ground handling sector.

  • Yobe Governor Vows Transparent APC Primaries If Consensus Fails

Yobe Governor Vows Transparent APC Primaries If Consensus Fails

Yobe State Governor Mai Buni says the All Progressives Congress (APC) is committed to conducting free, fair, and transparent primary elections if consensus candidates fail to emerge.

This is contained in a statement released by Buni’s Director-General, Press and Media Affairs, Mamman Mohammed, in Damaturu, the state capital, on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that six APC governorship aspirants in the state have rejected the endorsement of the party’s critical stakeholders’ candidate, Alhaji Baba Wali, and demanded the conduct of a credible direct primary election.

The aspirants are Sen. Ibrahim Bomoi of Yobe South, Alhaji Bashir Machina, Mr Kashim Musa-Tumsah, Mr Mustapha Maihaja, Alhaji Lawan Kolo, and retired Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Baba.

Buni said the party had not foreclosed the direct election mode to produce its candidates for elective offices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The emergence of Baba Mallam Wali as the preferred candidate of the party followed the resolutions of the critical stakeholders’ meeting of 23rd April 2026.

“He was endorsed and adopted as the preferred candidate, but if there is no general agreement, we shall adopt the election mode.

“This is not new. In 2019, I was nominated as a consensus candidate, a few other aspirants contested the decision, and we went for election where I emerged as the party’s candidate with a very wide margin. We are ready to repeat that history if we cannot reach consensus,” he said.

The governor, however, said the party was still reaching out to aggrieved aspirants and other stakeholders to arrive at an amicable resolution through dialogue.

“I will be the happiest person to see the state and party peaceful and united; we remain citizens of Yobe State and members of APC. My expectation is to see us more united and collectively working for our candidates to win the 2027 general election.

“As a founding member, former secretary and national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, the unity and progress of the party means so much to me personally. I will continue to support and protect the ideals of the party to remain Nigeria’s ruling political party,” Buni said.

The governor expressed optimism that the aspirations for public offices by all aspirants in the state were driven by the desire to serve the people for a better and improved life.

According to him, “Yobe is proudly a leading example of political transparency, internal and participatory democracy. We shall continue to uphold these principles to promote the policy of politics without bitterness.”

“I am proud to say we are all into this decision together with the critical stakeholders to agree and support the party in the state; after all, we are all working for the good of the state.”

Buni assured that the party would give everyone a sense of belonging and would continue supporting whoever emerged as its candidate for APC to win the presidential, governorship, and all National and State Assembly seats in the state.

“I call on all APC members in the state to promote unity and generate more support for the party to remain Yobe and Nigeria’s ruling political party, to deliver the state to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term bid and all other candidates of the APC,” the governor said.

Why DISCOs’ licenses should be revoked, reassigned to competent operators – Energy expert

An energy expert, Nick Agule, has called on the new Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe,  to revoke the licenses of Nigerian electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, and reassign to competent operators.

Ajule made the call on Sunday in an interview on Arise Television.

According to him, Nigeria needs about 200,000 megawatts of power, stressing that the country currently produces roughly 5,000 megawatts.

“That gap means the new power minister has his work cut out for him. His reported statement on tackling metering, gas supply, and transmission issues raises concern.

“Those are operational matters. The minister’s role is policy and administration—to create the enabling environment for the businesses managing those challenges to thrive.

“The minister should revisit the 2013 privatisation exercise and ask why the transmission sector was not privatised. This should free it from bottlenecks and chronic underfunding,” he said.

  • Kanayo O. Kanayo Condemns Xenophobia At AMVCA

Kanayo O. Kanayo Condemns Xenophobia At AMVCA

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for an end to xenophobic attacks in South Africa, urging Africans to unite against violence targeted at fellow citizens on the continent.

Kanayo was nominated for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, where he was honoured with the Industry Merit Award for his contributions to the African film industry.

Speaking during his acceptance speech, the veteran actor dedicated the recognition to film practitioners across Africa and reflected on the sacrifices made by pioneers in the entertainment industry.

“This is for Africa, for everyone who works as cast and crew. Even before 1992, many of us were no longer in good health, many have returned to their villages, and many have passed on,” he said.

He added that surviving and remaining relevant in the industry required immense sacrifice over the years.

“Sometimes, when you stand on a stage like this, you ask yourself, ‘What have I done to still be alive?’ Yes, I have made a lot of sacrifices,” Kanayo stated.

The actor also appealed to media giant Canal+ to sustain its support for Africa’s entertainment sector, describing the platform as a major force for unity across the continent.

“I want to extend a hand of friendship to Canal+, please keep this going. This is one thing that unites the whole of Africa,” he said.

Addressing the issue of xenophobia, Kanayo condemned the rising attacks in South Africa and called on Africans everywhere to reject hostility toward one another.

“On this note, I am not happy about what is going on in South Africa today. Let us lend our voices against xenophobia in South Africa. We are not happy. As Africans, we cannot continue running from Africa,” he said.

Also honoured at the ceremony was veteran actress Sola Sobowale, who expressed gratitude to fans and colleagues for their continued support throughout her career.
